Sony Alpha ILCE-7R Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Sony ILCE 7R and A7 are the world's first full-frame mirrorless imagers wherein, 7R is known to be the world's smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless cam with just 407 grams of body weight. The entirely new range of Sony FE- full-frame E-mount lenses will be out soon to take the vantage of new cams. Signified by FE, the range also includes number of lenses brought up with Carl Zeiss for apt image quality. The camera features a 36.4 megapixels full-frame CMOS type sensor, sans the OLPF, the optical low pass filter/anti-aliasing filter that enables the camera to fetch the best possible image quality.
The body of the camera is toughened by magnesium-alloy and makes it weather sealed and the side access to the memory card slot also comforts the users. You can use SD/SDXC/SDHC or Sony memory stick cards. Near Field Communication and Wi-Fi are built-in for remote operation and image transfer, when linked to Android/iOS smartphone. Videos can be recorded in Full HD resolution with stereo sound input at frame rates of 25/50/60fps. Also, a clean HDMi output can be taken over to an external device.
Design and Build Quality
Sony ILCE 7R and A7, both feature the same orange ring about the lens mount. This orange ring was introduced with Sony Alpha 88, and with Sony Cyber-Shot RX1, this actually signifies that the camera possesses a full frame sensor. Besides this, the camera has a subtle design, comes in Black metal body with SLR styling at the Electronic Viewfinder area and at the back of the camera, which match the design concept of Olympus OM-D E-M5. The design in its entirety has evoked mixed reactions, for some people welcomed the retro styling impression and some are not over the angular design. The back of the camera offers high-resolution 921k dots 3 inches wide tilt screen that moves down and up. There is a high-resolution 2.4 million dots OLED electronic viewfinder with eye-detection sensing and dioptre correction. The EVF turns on when held close to the eye. The video record button has been placed to the side so that you dont start recording videos by accident. Also, there is the microphone and headphone socket on side for those keenly interested in recording videos and for getting a clean HDMi output.
There is a mode dial that features Auto, PASM, scene and panorama video modes as two custom user modes. There is a custom one button over the top of the camera and the second custom button is there at the back along with Function/Wi-Fi button. The C3 button turns to delete function, when in playback mode. The functions that are available over the screen can be customized for quick approach by pressing the function button. A large front grip comes covered with textured rubber coating that covers round to the rear of the camera for your thumb to rest. There emerges a feel-good factor when you hold the camera with some smaller lenses though the larger FE lenses when mounted on camera, can make the camera feel heavy due to lens, so holding the camera with both the hands is very much recommended. If you aim at using adapters and Sony Alpha A-mount lenses or even other large lenses, then the battery grip addon can be of some help to make the camera give out a balanced feel and enhanced battery power.
The exposure compensation dial atop gives you quick access to the exposure control and the rear and front dial can be used for shutter and aperture control when in corresponding manual/shutter/aperture modes. The EVF is a nice work out by the maker, for it is clear and sharp in its display. And the EVF has nice rubber eye cup that will help people wearing glasses. The camera features menu system that is the same as that of Sony Alpha. Sony NEX menu system though expected, is not here and may not be in the upcoming cameras. At the back, a switch lets you change operations of AF/MF button to AEL button.
Focus and Face Detection
Sony ILCE 7R has the following focus modes; Autofocus, manual, spot, face detection, multi and centre. The shutter response at wide focus is of .45 seconds. Yet, the shutter response and focus are slower than A7, meaning the camera is not perfect for shooting subjects in motion. The quality of image produced is very good and can be even better, if one uses high quality lenses and good technique so as to get the best of the camera. Whether you use Sony lenses or an adapter, the setup of the camera is accurate and the manual focus is easy, all credit to focus peaking, other display options and the electronic viewfinder with high resolution. This camera uses contrast-detection autofocus with 25 points for it.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Sony ILCE 7R features lens that has very nice detailing to the images, from 55mm focal length position with aperture f/1.8 lens, covering the entire frame with detail. The lens is quite resistant to flare and comes with a deep hood. If you use 55mm lens, the distortion correction turns on auto and can't be put off though other defect corrections like vignetting and chromatic aberrations corrections can be switched off or on. In RAW images, very little level of distortion can be seen. The minimum focus distance of 55mm lens is 50cm, means it is not at all good for macro shots.
Screen and Menus
Sony ILCE 7R has a 3 inches wide screen of 921k resolution that can be tilted down and upwards, for above the head and below the waist shots. Also, there is an OLED electronic viewfinder with resolution of 2.4 million dots. The viewfinder automatically switches on when held near to the eye wherein, its main functions are eye-detection and dioptre correction.
The quality of the viewfinder is excellent, for it has a clear and a crisp display that includes dual axis electronic level. The EVF has got a good sized rubber surrounding mechanism to help viewing outdoors, an advantage to anyone wearing spects. The menu system here is almost similar to Sony's Alpha cameras rather than Sony's NEX cameras, which means, the menu system of NEX cameras may not be seen in the upcoming cameras.
Sony ILCE 7R comes with a Lithium-Ion battery rated at 270 shots as per CIPA testing standards. This is an info-lithium battery that lets you know exactly how much of the battery is left. The battery is charged within the camera via a supplied USB while an external charger has not been provided. Some people may find the battery life to be short, so carrying a spare would be advisable along with an external charger bought from Sony store.
Sony ILCE 7R records videos in Full HD resolution with stereo sound. There are options to adjust the levels of audio as well as out timing and wind noise filter. Mic, headphone and HDMi ports can be seen on the left of the camera. Clean HDMi output can be taken out as well. The resolutions can be of 1920 x 1080p, 640 x 480p and 1440 x 1080p at frame rates of 25fps or 60fps. Also, while recording videos, optical zoom can be used.
Sony ILCE 7R features an Exmor CMOS sensor with 36.4 megapixels resolution. The sensor size is full-frame with pixels width and height being 7360 and 4912 at an aspect ratio of 3:2. The width and height of the sensor are 35.9mm and 24mm respectively. The ISO sensitivity performance comprises of range that begins from ISO 50 equivalent and reaches up to ISO 25600. The camera gives appreciable noise performance. Up to ISO12800, the images so produced are quite acceptable. There is indeed slight loss in saturation of color at and above this level. The detail to the image begins to drop at ISO 6400 and ISO 12800 over default settings. If you cut down on noise reduction setting, then additional detail will appear to the images.
