Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony has released another model to be a part of its point and shoot digital cameras family. The style and design of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot, reminds you of Sony's Alpha DSLR cameras. The lens sported by this camera is fixed in its place and on offer, is the 26x optical zoom. The 35mm equivalent focal length ranges from a modest 22.3mm at wide angle to 580mm at telephoto. The maximum aperture dives from f/3.1 to f/5.9 over the range. H200 is unique, something you have not seen before in the series. Not only the camera offers long zoom but also comes with high sensor resolution. The sensor is of 1/2.3inches Super HAD CCD type and the effective resolution is of 20.1MP. At the rear, the camera features a 3inches wide Clear Photo LCD monitor. It may come to some users' disappointment that there is no electronic or optical viewfinder and so, all the imaging is done through the display. The resolution of the screen is fairly high at 460,000 dots. At the top dash, you have the pop-up flash. At Auto ISO sensitivity, the wide angle you have has a range of 6.8 meters at hand.

Sony's Intelligent Auto Mode recognizes the type of the scene and then aptly sets the camera configuration. The 360-panorama mode captures the images wisely and stitches them together by itself. To achieve that, all you need to perform is, press the shutter button for once, and pan over the given scene. The famed Beauty Effect function that has been seen in Sony cameras these days lets you retouch the portrait snaps to tone the skin of subject, widen the eyes, whiten the teeth and even remove shine. Stills work is taken care of, for you can shoot HD videos in 720p resolution with aspect pixels of 1280 x 720. Also, the camera is powered by four AA standard batteries. The device features high-speed data connectivity; USB 2.0, and standard definition video output. All your work gets stored either on SDHC or SD card or on the proprietary Memory Stick Duo cards.

Design and Build Quality

The design and finish of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot are fair, keeping the price in mind, though the camera has been built entirely from plastic. The physical controls are firmly placed, the battery compartment door can be swiftly opened and used plus the grip is comfortable. The camera seems to be targeted at the rookies. The controls are quite basic and navigating menus is quite easy. There is a mode dial at the top but getting a complete feel of H200 as a bridge camera is difficult, since it cannot be used totally manually. Apart from Auto Scene mode that is, landscape, portrait, sport, etc., the H200 only offers P (Program) and M (Manual) modes. The absence of S (Shutter) and A (Aperture) modes keep it from being a truly bridge camera for some. The screen at the rear is of Twisted Nematic type hence the viewing angles are very tight. The colors and contrasts give a scattered feel and the mid-greys are fully overexposed.

Focus and Face Detection

The AF is responsive. Other contemporary cameras with the same or powerful zoom are faster. The noise of zooming and focusing does get recorded while recording video. The face detection feature is also available, for it controls focus and exposure for accuracy. There are four AF modes namely, Multi-Point, Center-Weighted, Tracking Focus, and Face Tracking Focus. The range for manual focus and macro focus is same; 7.9inches to infinity. With Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot, you also get Auto Focus light assist.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot features 26x optical zoom lens, with focal length ranging from 22.3mm at wide-angle to 580mm at telephoto. The max aperture begins falling from f/3.1 to f/5.9, over this range. The camera also offers SteadyShot optical image stabilization.

Screen and Menus

Rear of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot offers large, 3inches wide, 4,60,000 dots Clear Photo LCD monitor. The screen is of twisted nematic type, so viewing it from different angles is limited. Yet the playback of your work can be easily seen even under bright sunlight. Menus navigation (through buttons provided) is simple and easy, in other words, to-the-point.

Battery

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot comes with 4 AA batteries and under CIPA ratings you can catch 240 shots. In stills shoot, the life of battery is of 175mins.

Video Mode

You can catch videos in 720p resolution at 30fps with stereo sound recording. The image quality isn't that impressive though. The snap comes out over-contrasted that makes you feel that the lighter zones have been overexposed whereas the darker zones have been under-exposed. Dark areas in the scene seem prone to video noise. The recording can be done in two video qualities such as 720p at 30fps and VGA at 30fps in Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot. The sound, as stated, gets recorded in stereo while the general quality of audio isn't remarkable. The audio is captured via two mikes placed next to each other and, their positioning make them vulnerable to echoes and reverberation. The barrel distortion at wide-angle is inevitable and remains visible over to the max zoom setting. If you are shooting scene in quiet background, the noise of zoom and focus will be picked up.

Sensors

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot packs 20million pixels over tiny 1/2.3 inches CCD sensor with dimensions of 4.6 x 6.2mm. The CCD sensor is known for being less sensitive to light over CMOS sensor. The small sensor size and huge pixels result in diffraction.

Pros

·         Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 Point & Shoot is quite easy to use.

·         The camera runs on AA batteries; replacement to which is easily available.

·         You get firm grip over the camera with the given design.

·         First bridge camera to give 20MP CCD sensor.

Cons

·         TN (Twisted Nematic) screen.

·         The noise/diffraction is problematic due to the small size of sensor.

·         At wide-angle frame, setting the lens does not give consistent quality.

·         In video mode, the quality of image as well as audio is poor.
