Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H300 DSLR Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 is an affordable camera with ample telephoto reach. If you look for zoom power, then it is the camera for you for it comes with 35x of optical zoom power. The SLR makes for a quite a comfortable grip to handle and since the viewfinder is not present, you would have to keep the camera at a certain length (arm's length) from your subject. Its selling feature is the Super HAD branded, 1/2.3-inch size, CCD type 20.1 megapixels sensor. The CMOS sensor could have been there instead but the presence of CCD is one of the factors why the camera is available at a reasonable cost. The CCD sensor cuts on both cost and speed, though. The camera catches very decent images at full-resolution with its burst capture speed of .8 frames per second. The buffer filling will cause you to slow down.

The ISO range for light sensitivity covers levels from ISO80 to ISO3200. The sony-branded front panel has a 35x optical zoom with a humble zoom length range of 25mm at wide-angle and 875mm equivalent at telephoto, in 35mm terms. Coming to the aperture range, it covers f/3.0 at wide-angle up to f/5.9 at telephoto end. And as expected, the imaging giant has included, the optical SteadyShot image stabilization function in the camera. The camera also offers a recently worked up smart active mode that, as Sony claims, stabilizes the videos even better as compared to the ones operated by the previous models. The Autofocus feature involves contrast-detection system that comprises of center, spot and multi-point AF modes with both face tracking and subject tracking functions. To help you with low light conditions, there is the AF illuminator. The camera has a SLR like design but no viewfinder.

You have to frame your shots with its 3 inches wide ClearPhoto LCD monitor with a 460k dots resolution wherein, each pixel consists of Green, Red and Blue dots. When compared to its viewfinder loaded, long zoom kin, H400, H300 does not feature the external flash option, although, there is an inbuilt pop flash present. If you turn on the Auto ISO, the flash reaches 29 feet at wide-angle and 15 feet at telephoto. The camera clearly aims at cost effectiveness, for it has both Manual and Program shoot modes. There are no aperture-priority and shutter-priority modes, though there is a lot of extra space for both of them to be featured. Most of the users will use the single-shot smart auto mode in addition to the scene and panorama modes. Other modes at work are Night Scene, High Sensitivity, Landscape, Night Portrait, Soft Snap, Soft Skin, Fireworks, Snow, Beach, Gourmet and Pet Mode.

There are exposure modes including center-weighted, multi-pattern, spot-metering and +/-2.0EV of exposure compensation that comes in 1/3EV steps. The dynamic range optimizer function so included, helps to fight the difficult light conditions for preserving highlight and shadow detail. The camera can catch videos, though not in Full HD resolution but in HD resolution as the slow sensor only makes you catch high-resolution videos. The aspect pixels remain at 1280 x 720p at frame rate of 30fps. The videos get audio in monaural format. There are two options for connectivity - USB 2.0 high-speed data and composite standard-definition video via the same port. Videos and stills are recorded inside secured digital cards on the proprietary memory stick duo cards from Sony. The power is derived from the four AA batteries that are rated at 350 shots per full charge.

Design and Build Quality

Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 has a SLR like body with good grip. The camera comes in black coloured body only with an overall impressive build quality.

Focus and Face Detection

Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 comes with contrast-detection autofocus system that covers multi-point, spot AF and center modes. There are two tracking focus functions; face and subject. Also, there is an AF illuminator that aids you in catching nice shots of closer subjects under low light.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 comes with an OpticalSteadyShot Image stabilization feature in addition to this new intelligent active mode that stabilizes videos better than the functions that were present in the previous models. The zooming power of the lens is 35x optically and zoom length range is of 25mm at wide-angle and goes up to 875mm at telephoto position.

Screen and Menus

Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 has a 3 inches wide LCD monitor at the back with ClearPhoto tag and resolution of 460k dots, in other words, the aspect pixels are 480 x 320p wherein, each pixel comprises of Red, Green and Blue dots.

Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 derives its power from four AA batteries that are rated at 350 shots per single charge as per CIPA testing standards.

Video Mode

Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 can shoot videos in HD resolution with frame size of 1280 x 720 pixels at frame rate of 30 frames per second. The audio comes in monaural format.

Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 comes with a super HAD-branded, CCD type, 1/2.3-inch sized 20.1 megapixels sensor. The CCD type sensor though saves on costs, slows down the performance. The ISO sensitivity range goes as high as 3200ISO and begins from 80ISO. The camera catches full-resolution burst mode images at .8 frames a second. There is an inbuilt pop flash and no external connectivity option for flash. With Auto ISO on, the camera has working range of 15 feet at telephoto and 29 at wide-angle position.

  • Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 can zoom up to 35x optically
  • It features a 20.1MP super HAD CCD sensor
  • Videos can be shot in 720p HD mode
  • The 3 inches wide ClearPhoto LCD works good enough for framing shots

  • Sony Cybershot DSC-H300 doesn't feature shutter-priority and aperture-priority modes
  • There is no optical viewfinder
  • There is external flash connectivity
