Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-एचएक्स४००वी Point & Shoot Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony HX400V features a 20.4 megapixels Exmor R CMOS sensor and up to 50x optical zoom lens wherein, the 35mm equivalent zoom length range is from 24 to 1200mm. The minimum focusing distance is only 1cm and the optical image stabilization function tends to keep images quite sharp. There are two auto modes; the superior auto cuts the blur and noise whereas the intelligent auto chooses the right scene characteristics. The camera has full manual controls, sweep panorama and a number of scene modes. Also, there are numerous picture effects that you can apply to shots like miniature, partial color, toy camera etc. The connectivity options include Wi-Fi for sharing images and GPS functionality to geotag the images. In addition, there is a tiltable screen, an electronic viewfinder and hotshoe mount. Videos can be recorded in full 1080p resolution while availing the optical zoom. Stereo sound can be recorded and one can record videos via PASM modes to control shutter/aperture speeds.

Design and Build Quality

Sony HX400V possesses a DSLR type body wherein, it comes with a rubber handgrip and a rubber patch at the back for your thumb to rest. At the top of the camera, a mode dial sits besides the function, on/off buttons, custom, shutter and zoom rocker. The function button gives you access to the settings for picture like white balance and ISO. There is a switch to turn from monitor to EVF as well, though as you put the EVF to your eye, it turns on all by itself. There is the Wi-Fi function, which lets you to transfer images over smartphone and tablets, for that you would have to go to playback, access Wi-Fi settings via menu and either choose images from the camera or do the same by using your smartphone. Moreover, you have to install PlayMemories application in your smartphone to make use of Wi-Fi.

There is a 3 inches wide LCD monitor that can be tilted to make the view easier when you have to take the odd, above head/below waist shots. Also, a dial lets you control the aperture and shutter speed and helps you to browse through menus. The dpad works to get you access to flash, self-timer, display, burst mode and exposure. The monitor has a 921k dots resolution and the electronic viewfinder is quite bright and rich in color.

Focus and Face Detection

The lens barrel of Sony HX400V has a part that rotates to adjust the manual focus/zoom while using autofocus, there is a groove that helps the grip. At the side of the barrel, there is a switch to turn from manual to auto or vice-versa. You can also add 55m filters. Above the 35mm terms markings on the lens, there is a switch to pop flash. There are three focus modes; manual, AF tracking and autofocus.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony HX400V, at both ends of its lens - wide-angle and telephoto, gives decent detail to the images. Other than this, little softness does appear in corners. When zooming in, some purple fringing can be observed. For macro shots, the minimum focusing distance is 1cm. The maximum aperture range is from f/2.8 – f/6.3. In 35mm equivalence, at wide-angle position, 24mm begins and covers zoom length up to 1200mm at telephoto end. There is also the optical image stabilization function that helps to keep images very sharp. The camera can record at 10fps burst speed.

Screen and Menus

Sony HX400V comes with a 3 inches wide LCD screen that can tilt to enable you to take below the waist and above the head, shots. The resolution of the screen is of 921k dots and when you have to take above the head shot with tilted screen, the EVF comes in the way to a slight extent. The EVF is rich in colors and quite convenient to use. There is also a dioptre wheel for those with slightly poor eyeshight. At the rear of the camera, there are help, playback, movie and menu buttons. A dpad helps you to cycle through the menus, which also gives access to flash, display, self-timer, exposure compensation and continuous shooting. A dial lets you to change aperture and shutter speed, apart from helping you to cycle through the menus.

Sony HX400V comes rated with 300 shots as per CIPA testing standards, good enough for a bridge camera. Should you turn the LCD off and use EVF instead, more shots can be taken. The battery – NP-BX1, is a rechargeable one. Also, an AC adapter (AC-UB10C) gets supplied with the device.

Video Mode

Sony HX400V records video in Full HD resolution, 1080p. The quality of the video is good and the stabilization function does a fine job in keeping videos steady, when you shoot them while holding the camera in hand. You can use the optical zoom feature while shooting videos wherein, the focus adjusts swiftly but slight noise of zooming is recorded. The frame rates at which you can record videos are 24fps, 25fps, 50i and 50fps. The audio comes in stereo format and the frame size remains at 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Sony HX400V features a 20.4 megapixels backside-illuminated CMOS sensor wherein, the pixels width is 5184 and height is 3888. The size of the sensor is of 1/2.3-inch. The aspect ratio remains at 4:3 and the ISO range begins from 80 and goes up to 12800 equivalents. And up to ISO 400, the images are sharp enough and reasonably, low in noise. At ISO 800, the noise kicks in and deprives the image of its detail by softening it. At ISO 1600 to ISO 3200, the camera struggles to preserve detail and inturn, softens it more and more. At ISO 6400 and ISO 12800, the quality of the image suffers and becomes almost unacceptable.

  • Sony HX400V offers optical zoom up to 50x
  • Battery life is good enough
  • It offers GPS and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • The screen can be tilted
  • Panorama shots are clean and admirable
  • Electronic viewfinder works auto

  • Sony HX400V doesn't support RAW file shoot
  • Between ISO sensitivity range 6400 and 12800, the image quality becomes near to unacceptable
  • The device is costly
