Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 II Point & Shoot - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony Cybershot RX100 proved to be a breakthrough last year and Sony has revised it even better this year. The new Sony Cybershot RX100 II features few yet significant updates though the actual body remains nearly a copy. The display at the rear can be tilted down and up and the image sensor has seen improvement with a hotshoe sitting on top. The RX100M II has inherited the wireless (Wi-Fi and NFC) connectivity so that the user can transfer videos and images to PCs and smart devices, as well control it via link setup with smart devices. The camera sports a 1-inch wide and 20.2MP sensor, not to speak too technically, the sensor of this size is too big for the given size of the camera. The low light performance thus has been bettered than before.

Moreover, the device is an Exmor R type that is, it’s 'backlit' comes without a say, and its ISO sensitivity has been increased to 12,800ISO. The camera can shoot in RAW mode and the files are rendered quite large but the fact that well known Apple and Adobe's photo editing softwares do not recognize the RAW files delivered by the very camera is disappointing. When you focus on zoom, the Carl Zeiss lens can give you optical zoom up to 3.6x by covering a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-100mm. The maximum aperture measurement at wide angle is f/1.8. The display is still 3 inches wide and of high-resolution 1229k dot, it’s just that the ability to tilt it upwards and downwards gives you freedom of choosing odd framing angles. The RX 100 MII can record videos at 1080p full HD resolution at 24fps.

Another significant feature is the ‘click detents’ to the ring at the front. The zoom can now move in steps of 28, 35, 50, 70, and 100mm equivalents for a quick zoom work out. A solid dial on top empowers you to switch between shoot modes. There is a micro USB cable and port for charging the camera, so you would not need a separate charger for the purpose. If you are to take the camera out for a day's shoot and use wireless features, it is very much recommended that you carry an extra battery.

Design and Build Quality

Much of the design and build of Sony CyberShot RX100 II is same as its predecessor. The camera is sleek and fits easily into the bag and shirt pocket. The large sensor size does not really intervene in its compactness. The metal body accounts for the slim appearance. There is no front grip to the camera, though it has a small grip at the back of the camera to act as thumb rest. At the top, a mode dial lets you switch between modes such as full Auto, Panorama, and PASM. A slot tagged memory recall lets you access the set of settings you prefer frequently. The 3.6x optical zoom lens is operated via switch around shutter wherein, the zooming is fluid.

There is a wide range of physical buttons such as, a scroll dial at the rear for altering parameters like speed of shutter, aperture etc., a function button that triggers quick menu where you can allot up to seven different settings like ISO, digital filters, and so on, and a help button that is marked by question mark and serves as delete button when in playback mode. There is a ring around lens that can be customized to perform functions other than setting aperture as well. The step zoom function lets you quickly jump general focal length stops used like 28, 35, 50mm, which is done by lens dial. A couple of presses on display button bring to you the electronic level that informs whether your shot has been lined up properly or not. Apart from this, at the rear, you have 3 inches wide LCD screen with high-resolution 1.229k dot. Also, a new addition to Mark II is the multi-purpose hotshoe.

Focus and Face Detection

The Sony CyberShot RX100 II provides you with contrast detect AF and 10 per cent improvement in AF speed over the previous version. There is AF assist lamp that helps you to lock focus. Also, there are 25 AF points and focusing modes like center spot, flexible spot, face tracking and tracking modes. You can also focus manually too.

Lens and Image Stabilization

The Sony CyberShot RX100 II uses optical zoom lens with up to 3.6x zoom. The branding name is Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar. The 35mm-equivalent focal length range is of 28-100mm. The max aperture falls from f/1.8 at wide-angle to f/4.9 at Telephoto. The user gets Optical SteadyShot Image stabilization.

Screen and Menus

The Sony Cybershot RX100 II menu systems resemble the Alpha DSLR series by the maker. The system is well laid out, clean and clear to work upon, and has been cut among seven groups so that accessing options discreetly give comfort to the user. With Fn button at the rear, you can set ISO, WB, DRO/HDR, Metering, Focus area and options for the quality of image. The screen can be tilted to 3 inches wide with high resolution of 1.2M dot accompanied by Sony's own 'WhiteMagic' technology. There is an option of Auto Brightness as well. Also, the LCD can be tilted 45 degree downwards and 84 degrees upwards.

Sony Cybershot RX100 II still has the same NP-BX1 lithium-ion rechargeable battery to be powered. As per CIPA standards, you get 350 shots on a single full charge or for that matter, 80 minutes of video recording. The extended use of Wi-Fi consumes battery power.

Video Mode

With Sony Cybershot RX100 II, you can avail of optical zoom while recording the video. There is a wind noise filter as well. The quality of video so churned is quite good since all the recording goes on in 1080p Full HD resolution. The optical image stabilization also aids to keep the video from blurring out. You confront two options for recording the video namely, AVCHD full HD at frame rates 24 or 25fps or MP4 format recording as aspect pixels/frame size of 1440 x 1080. You can extract stills in video mode as well but recording must be on 17MP. The audio gets in, in stereo sound format.

Sony Cybershot RX100 II comes with 1-inch wide Exmor R BSI CMOS 20.2MP sensor. The sensor is 2.7 times larger than most of its contemporaries in the same class. The size of sensor matters since it is the foremost factor behind providing rich quality image. Due to the large size of sensor, more light falls on it thus improving the signal to noise ratio. The sensor is backlit type that results in a commendable low light performance. The ISO sensitivities range from 160ISO to 12800ISO and the lower can be extended to 100 or 125ISO.

·         Remarkable performance at high ISO sensitivities

·         The Aperture lens is wide and backlit CMOS image sensor is of size 1-inch

·         Tilting WRGB 3-inch wide display and customizable physical controls

·         Shutter lag is very small. The images can be captured in RAW form

·         The multi-purpose hot shoe can also be attached with Electronic Viewfinder

·         Image quality is excellent

·         Wireless connectivity

·         Full manual control can be achieved easily

·         Very restricted zoom range.

·         Expensive

·         The battery can be charged only when inside the camera

·         At the front, the grip is not large

·         AF may not work very well

·         Functions under Wi-Fi are limited

·         At times, the info on screen is either too much or too little

·         Menu navigation is slow at times

·         Buttons at the back are quite small
