Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W380 Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

The camera is available in a very cheerful palate with black, silver, gold and pink to choose from. It’s convenient to carry and keep with good specifications. The 14.1 MP 1/2.3 inch Super HAD CCD sensor works well and responsively coupled with the Sony G’s high quality 5X zoom lens equivalent to 24-120 mm taking wide angled and beautiful pictures. For previewing the 2.7 inch LCD screen is presented on the cameras rare. It can record HD videos, has advanced point autofocus, optical image stabilization and the sweet Sweep Panorama mode. With performance and alluring looks, the camera is ready to be pocketed and worked around with!

Design and Build Quality

The camera is as what a shoot and point camera must look, just fabulous. Sony DSC W80 is quite slender and tiny measure only 52 mm x 92 mm x 20 mm. So very easy to walk it with in your hands and slide it into your pocket. Does not even feel bulky, after all it weighs a mere 150 grams including batteries and memory card. The only true means of gripping the camera is the round mode dial on the read of the camera which is where your thumb intuitively will eventually fall. The casing is metal making is strong and fancy looking. The front is covered with 5X lens, a small and constricted window for the flash and a port hole for the self time and AF illuminator.

Focus and Face Detection

This camera comes with an included IAuto i.e. Intelligent Auto scene recognition mode in it’s like up of shooting modes. The operation is simple as the camera analysis the scene or subject meant to shoot/record, it then automatically selects from 11 pre – optimized settings to best work with your environment. So essentially the Intelligent Auto filters the situation and also select from 8 pre-set ‘exposure modes’ alter everything from aperture, shutter speed to color balance. It is proven good with trickier twilight landscape and lightly lit portraits. To top this Sony DSC W80 presents you with enhanced Face Detection system. This automatically differences between children and adults, further altering the settings e.g. exposure etc. Another perky feature ‘Smile Detection’ is manual and can be turned off whenever pleased, this comes with big, normal and slight smile scale. With the help of such features self portraits are made even better. Other clever features that take the work load off your shoulder are Smile Shutter and Anti blink mode.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony CyberShot DSC W380 gives you a remarkable 5X extending optical lens a quick and bright f/2.4 maximum aperture and ISO speed up to 3200 and so making the camera a very suitable with hand held low light photography. As with the 24 mm wide-angle setting the camera straightaway attracts the professional photographers. The lens is enjoyable and the 5X zoom to be in a tiny package like this camera is more easily adaptable than one can think. It has everything from ultra wide landscape to candid portrait shots. The dual image stabilization structure fixed in Sony gives it the extra edge as it comes off as much better than many average point and shoot cameras. With the help of an extended ISO range up to 3200, as mentioned earlier, and a dedicated Optical SteadyShot feature the blurring is reduced drastically. Thus making handshakes one less thing you need not to worry about while capture photos even in low lit areas. This must also be taken into account that the Optical SteadyShot can be turned off.

Screen and Menus

For a camera so pocket-able the screen is not one of the biggest you’d come across but still very striking. The viewing of your shot’s easy with the 2.7 inch Clear Photo LCD screen at the rear. As anyone would except with a screen so small there lies no optical viewfinder to fall back on, nonetheless the screen gives you intricate details and elevated contrast. Most of the cameras features are accessed via buttons on the camera. The camera is beginner friendly as in the Easy shooting mode presented with the same Intelligent Auto scene system; it reduces the number of features and makes the text and icons larger for usage.

This pocket able cute camera is well powered to last 220 shots with lithium-ion battery. This is pretty good considering its cheap coming and good features.

Video Mode

A standout feature for Sony Cybershot DSC W380 is its High Definition video recording capability. All one has to do is turn the dial to the movie mode and you are set to record HD video clips at maximum 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps. The videos are presented in a PC friendly MPEG-4 format with the optimized use of optical zoom. The amazing bit to this feature is its very own underwater shooting mode, alongside the capability of changing the EV level, white balance and metering options. And if you’d like to see your movies on the TV screen, the camera provides for that a direct HDMI output. You can playback about 60 minutes of footage stored on the available 4GB Memory stick. Lastly, you can add effects and music too with the HD slideshow, fun isn’t it?

The camera caters an impressive 14.1 Megapixel resolution on this account you will be able to make excellent poster print at A3 or crop the images without falling behind on quality. Essentially, Sony CyberShot DSC w380 can be found boasting its 14.1 Megapixel CCD image sensor working with the BIONZ processor. The starting can vouch for the quick performance as it took only a decent 1.7 second for the camera to open. Whilst the only set back comes with the 3.7 seconds delay in between shots. Starting up the camera took around 1.7 seconds which is decent probably because of saving the photos. Any ways, continuous shooting and little noise presented during bright light shooting proves the sensors ability. Over all the sensor gives you detailed and worth enjoying images.

The camera comes with the crisp, clear and vivid photographing. The camera’s outlook is not only just neat, but excellent for handling and carrying around. Lastly, the auto focusing and face detection features are simply fantastic which their efficiency and also, helpful to new users.

The camera is a setback when it comes to the slow response during menu navigation. The f/5.9 aperture for telephoto falls less behind than expectation and the ‘sweep panorama’ takes photo at reduced resolution other than which the camera is a good buy.
