Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W570 Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony Cybershot DSC W570 packs in 5x optical zoom lens with focal length range of 25-125mm. The camera also stores the 16MP CCD. The camera is small, lightweight and easy to use. You can choose program mode or scene mode from main menu. The controls are quite simple and intuitive. When you turn on the iAuto mode, all your imaging task gets delegated to the machine that works to get the best of the given scene. The image quality as times was embarrassing. The noise and chromatic aberration was quite noticeable in some portions of the image. The camera itself sets the exposure, you may not be always satisfied with the end results.

The wide f/2.6 aperture of lens and optical steadyshot image stabilization do give a good reason for good low light performance but practically its not worth it. ISO level beyond 400 was not acceptable to the image quality and 1/10 sec shutter speed too was noticed with effects of blurring. The 2.7 inches of Clear Photo LCD isn't very bright and suffers from smudging and reflection. The video can be shot in HD resolution only, the power gets in from proprietary battery by Sony while the work gets stored inside SD cards. Overall if you are to turn to digicams within this price range, W570 still has more alternatives to it.

Design and Build Quality

Sony Cybershot DSC W570 is of length of a business card. It can easily fit into a pocket of jacket or any purse. The camera is 19.1mm in depth. It is also quite stylish to look at. The zoom lens can be full retracted to maintain the sleek profile of the camera. At front you have an AF light assist as well you have an LED flash. There is 2.7 inches wide LCD monitor at the back of the camera and a 4 way pad for navigation in to menu system. Other buttons include playback, erase, buttons for telephoto and wide-angle ends. There is a slider button as well at the back, that lets you play between video recording, panorama and photo. The physical controls have a silver finish to them.

Along with shutter release there is on/off button at the roof the camera. For connectivity part you only get USB port, situated beneath the camera. Also beneath are memory and battery spaces, flaps for which give a robust feel. The flap holds the battery quite strongly. Owing to the small and light body of the camera you can capture images with one hand only. The camera weighs only 116 grams.

Focus and Face Detection

Sony Cybershot DSC W570 has face detection feature and can detect up to 8 faces. Focus modes are Multi-Point AF, Center-Weighted AF and Spot AF. AF light assist can be turned to either Auto or OFF. These can be accessed in program mode in menu. The AF system is 9 point. Smile detection feature detects three types of smiles, big normal and slight. Left button on the controller disk activates smile detection and as and when the subject smiles, the shutter gets released. Face detection can be prioritized for children's and adult's faces. AF performance is something to worry about here. Fast-moving subjects cannot be tracked. Even when set to iAuto the camera want very much able to focus sharply on a subject. The AF light assist ON, the camera is able to focus in full darkness, say on a candle light but overall AF performance is not admirable.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony Cybershot DSC W570 has Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar branded optical zoom lens with zoom-in power of up to 5 levels. The focal length range of the camera is 25-125mm. The lens is of telescoping quality, meaning it will rest inside the body completely ensuring flat and sleek exterior. When you are shooting stills in 10MP resolution you can zoom in up to 6.3x. In VGA resolution image you can zoom up to 36x. You'd have to set the smart zoom on in the menu and then lower the resolution to avail it. It doesn't work itself. Precision zoom goes up to 10x. The iAuto mode itself switches to macro mode if you get too close to the object. With it, you can get nearly 5cm close to the subject at wide-angle end. You can set macro manually. The camera also offers Optical SteadyShot image stabilization performs well enough to keep images blur-free and shake free.

Screen and Menus

Sony Cybershot DSC W570 features Clear Photo LCD, of size 2.7 inches and has a resolution of 230,400 dots. You can set the brightness of the screen via menu settings but default brightness is too dim when you are out. The screen is vulnerable to reflection and smudging due to the plastic finish.

The menu system is very intuitive and easy to navigate given the four way controller. When you press the menu button at the back you find a no. of menu items aligned to the left of the display with image preview covering the rest of screen. The icons are fairly large and titles almost explain the functioning of every icon. If you feel a complete newness to photography, turn the camera to Easy Mode, which will open a streamlined interface with only general options to be taken up for photography. There is button for in-camera guide on the body, the guide teaches what does what and also takes you to have direct access to functions (wherever possible) it teaches you about. The guide is divided into 6 segments. Shoot/playback makes you learn various modes in camera. Icon guide tells what each icon does. Objective and shoot/playback guide teaches you about some specific functions.

Sony Cybershot DSC W570 derives its power from Lithium-ion Battery NP-BN1 battery pack. As per CIPA testing standards that camera, on single full charge can give 220 stills/100 mins. Video, sufficient for a day long shoot. Underneath the camera is the battery compartment. The multi-connector cable plug is next to the compartment door, you must keep it shut for cable to connect. The battery eats 3 to 4 hours of charging time. The battery must be taken out to charge it back via supplied BC-CSNB battery charger.

Video Mode

With Sony Cybershot DSC W570 you can have three choices to shoot videos. In HD format, you can shoot at 720p resolution, in frame size 1280x720 at frame rate of 30 fps at 9mbps. In standard mode you can shoot with same configuration but at 6mbps. Lastly you can shoot at frame size 640x480 at 3mbps with frame rate 30fps. One video clip length can go up to 29 minutes. The quality of videos in not impressive, the color reproduction isn't good with appearance of pixelation. Though you can use zoom while recording a video, the autofocus is too weak to have a precise lock on the subject. The audio comes in via mono mic. and not stereo mic. You can adjust white balance, exposure and metering mode before you begin to shoot the video. There is an underwater mode as well, you'd have to buy an underwater housing separately. These are some controls you get on video part. 28mm in 16:9 mode and 34mm in 4:3 mode, is as far you can go with the lens zoom.

Sony Cybershot DSC W570 features Super HAD CCD sensor of size 1/2.3 inch. Effective megapixel count is 16.1MP. ISO sensitivity range begins from 80 and goes up to 3200ISO levels. 80 and 100ISO, the detail is fair enough. The problem begins with 200 and above, ISO400 brings in softness on detail and cold color balance. ISO800 and above noise becomes apparent and intrusive. You even observe chromatic aberration. ISO 3200, images are of no use.

* Sony Cybershot DSC W570 is smaller in size, is stylish and has a simpler menu system.

With auto mode on the camera works equally fine when facing low light conditions.

The camera features optical zoom up to 5 levels and 25mm wide-angle lens.

Sweep panorama stitches the images beautifully.

iAuto mode aids a lot in shooting, turn it on and you not have bother for the quality imaging.

In-camera guide assists in understanding the variety of features.

AF (autofocus) is agile and Auto white balance leads to impressive results.

LCD viewing angles range isn't wide enough. And at times the monitor flickers

Zoom is located at the back.

Physical controls aren't many, so it require to memorize where to access what.

Response time from shot-to-shot is more, corners of the images are soft at times.

Focusing in video mode is weak.

HD video quality is not remarkable.

Sony Cybershot DSC W570 is so light and small to hold that the case can be little difficult.

Above 400ISO, the quality for printing images begins to fade.
