Sony Cyber-shot RX100 Mark III Point & Shoot Camera - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony Cyber shot RX100 Mark III Point and Shoot camera comes with a 20.2 megapixels backside illuminated CMOS sensor that allows for impressive noise work out and great image quality. There is NFC, Wi-Fi, hidden EVF, and a Carl Zeiss f/1.8 24-70mm equivalent zoom lens with 5-axis image stabilization. There is a tilt screen with selfie function which makes catching selfies quite easy. The price to some may seem high but if you don’t want a new EVF and lens, you can go for the older versions. Overall, the camera works well and is good for those who want to try out advanced point and shoot cameras before turning to entry level DSLRs.

Design and Build Quality

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 III is similar to the previous models, though it is just 2.5mm wide and weighs 9 grams. The EVF pops and the eye-piece gets pulled outwards. The camera sports a sleek appearance and robust feel due to its metal chassis. You can easily use it one handed and it feels well balanced. There is a mode dial at the top of the camera that gives quick access to shoot modes including program, manual, panorama, fully auto, shutter and aperture priority. There is a useful memory recall option that lets users to save and access their favorite setups. The zoom is handled via switch above the shutter release and a ring around the lens can be used for setting adjustments. With custom button, you can access one of the 43 features that include aspect ratio and white balance. Also, there is a function button that allows access to 12 parameters like flash, white balance and ISO.

Focus and Face Detection

Sony RX100 Mark III has a small EVF, but provides quite a detailed view along with active focus points and highlighted recognition boxes. With focus and exposure locked, you can get 10 ‘frames a second’ shots. With Auto-focus and Auto-exposure, you can achieve 2.5 frames per second shots, as per the manufacturer’s specs. The focusing modes are; Autofocus, Manual, AF Tracking, Spot, Face Detection, Multi and Centre. The minimum focusing distance is 5cm and the lock on auto-focus tracks the motion of the subject. The focus area settings are easier with zebra mode been added and add-ons like focus peaking, manual focus assist, auto object framing and eye-detection AF. One can also customize the size of the focus point with options like small, medium and large.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 III comes with a 24-70mm lens with a max aperture of F1.8-2.8. The lens brand is Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T and is bright across the zoom range with its macro capability being enhanced by Sony. The minimum focusing distance is 30cm at telephoto and 5cm at the wide-angle end. The 5-axis image stabilization system helps in low light performance. There is a manual focus assist option, which zooms the relevant part of image so that you can perform some focus peaking and also give heed to zebra display – shows the areas liable to burn over.

Screen and Menus

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 III camera comes with a clear sharp LCD screen with tilt mechanism that looks sturdy. If you wish to shoot selfies, then the EVF must be put back into the body. By doing this, the camera will enter into a selfie self timer mode with screen flipped right up and countdown from three displayed after the shutter release button is pressed. The menu system is of full customizable type, for it lets you to put six or twelve functions as per your choice over one or two deck function menu. This means that you can bring together functions that you are inclined to adjust at the same time like AF and AF point selection mode or RAW/JPEG and HDR. This customizable function system is the same as presented in Alpha7 and Alpha7R.

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 III Point and Shoot camera runs on a NP-BX1 lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack, the same that was used by both, Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 I and Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 II. The battery is charged within the camera through a multi terminal micro USB port. As per CIPA testing standards, the battery life has been rated at 320 shots, if you use the LCD or 230 shots should you use the EVF. The number is lesser than its older siblings but still holds good.

Video Mode

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 III camera can record videos in XAVC S (Full HD video) format, which is a variant of XAVC format used by professional shutterbugs. The video is created via full-pixel readout at 50Mbps for enhanced image quality. There is no 4K video output but you can catch 4K stills via an HDMi micro lead for better image over TVs that support 4K display. Other video compression options are 60/60p or 50/60i frame rates. The camera offers 24/25p frame rates and also a 30p option. There is a new 120p frame rate for High-Definition video with 1280 x 720 pixels, which can allow for a 4x slow motion effect when used in 30p playback. Along with new, SteadyShot Intelligent Active Mode technology, the video gets stabilized with new five-axis digital correction.

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 III camera comes with a 20.2 megapixels Exmor CMOS sensor like Mark II. Along with the new BIONZ X image processor, the ISO sensitivity range covers from ISO125 to ISO12800. ISO25600 can be availed too in the multi-frame noise reduction mode. This point and shoot camera produces vibrant images. The lower ISO sensitivity settings reveal a lot of detail but as the images are viewed at 100 percent at high sensitivity levels, the detail is lost. By ISO6400, the images look dotted. The noise control of the camera is not great but good enough, for even an image taken at ISO12800 is good for an A3 size print. If you are shooting in RAW files format, the good thing is that you can control the noise reduction after the image has been taken.

  • Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 III Point and Shoot camera come with the 'best in class' large sensor
  • Illuminated maximum apertures across entire zoom length provides lot of flexibility to the user
  • Viewfinder is responsive and sensor is of high quality
  • Excellent control over videos involving manual exposure
  • Inbuilt ND filter aids in shooting of both, stills and videos under bright light
  • Heavily processed JPEG files are still pleasant to look at
  • Stepless aperture ring, Zebra Pattern and focus peaking tools for shooting videos
  • Under good light conditions, Autofocus is responsive enough
  • Burst mode for shooting
  • D-Range optimizer aids in well-balanced JPEG files even within high contrast frames
  • Wi-Fi feature works
  • USB charging is convenient
  • Sweep panorama and High Dynamic Range features work well
  • Lens works faster
  • Inbuilt Electronic Viewfinder

  • Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 III Point and Shoot camera locks down while the buffer clears after burst mode
  • Remote control is limited when connected to a smartphone
  • Since the focus ring is of variable speed, manual focus can at times get difficult
  • No external charger supplied
  • Autofocus enhances when assist lamp is put off and can struggle to find focus when in low light
  • Focus peaking denotes everything under focus
  • JPEG sharpness handling is clumsy and interacts oddly with a lot of noise reduction
  • Clumsy control dial that can make shooting as if it was disconnected
  • Zoom range feels restricted at times
  • EVF activation involves two steps
