Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony CyberShot DSC RX1 is a unique camera since it comes with a fixed lens and also a full-frame sensor. The camera can shoot high quality images with its Carl Zeiss f/2.0 35mm lens that sits at the front. The size of the body of the camera is similar to that of a mirrorless camera having compact lens at the front. With a full frame sensor, the noise performance is excellent and those who are looking for high quality within a small package, this camera is an excellent one, provided one can afford it for cost is also a factor here. Full HD video shooting, inbuilt high dynamic range and panorama shots stitching are some of the camera’s advanced features. With a BIONZ image processing engine and easy to use manual controls, shooting with RX1 is a delight. Also, charging can be done within the camera. RX1 can be availed from Sony’s stores worldwide.

Design and Build Quality

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 is a well designed full frame camera with a solid metallic body having rubberized grip both at back and front. The copper colored ring in it has been designed to act as a hallmark for all full frame cameras from Sony. The battery cover is made of plastic but looks robust enough. The custom button at the top can be set at Flash mode, Drive mode, Soft skin, Autofocus area, Auto portrait framing, Smile/Face detection, Metering mode, ISO, white balance, flash comp, Creative style, DRO/HDR, image size, picture effect, quality, aspect ratio, AEL toggle, AEL hold, AF/MF control hold / toggle, spot AEL hold / toggle, focus magnifier, smart teleconvertor / zoom, deactivate the LCD, memory or to nothing.

Along with this, the right, left and bottom buttons can be customized to any of the given options. The movie button can be set to active in each mode or you can simply let it be on the movie mode. The camera comes with a number of wide Sony RX1 branded strap. The grip for the thumb makes it easier to hold the camera, specially when you are using an electronic or optical viewfinder, though playback button and also the control wheel get covered until you flip the grip from their way.

Focus and Face Detection

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 makes use of the Carl Zeiss Sonnar f/2T 35mm lens that sits at the front of this imaging device. In normal use, the closest focusing distance is of 30cm. With a rotating macro ring, the camera lets you focus from 35cm to 20cm. And with a manual aperture ring, you can set the aperture that lies in the range of f/22 to f/2 with a 2 click stop between each of the marking. Shots can be taken at 5fps and up to 13 count without causing the camera to slowdown and having all the lens correction features turned on but if you switch these options off, you can shoot up to 10 pictures in JPEG format. Both focus response and shutter response are quick, at times the camera may hunt for focus. The focusing modes are; Autofocus, Spot, Multi, Centre and Face detection.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Chromatic aberrations and purple fringing aren’t a huge problem and can be corrected with an inbuilt correction aid. Vignetting is also noticeable and can be corrected. The dynamic range is good enough plus the quality at the edge and centre is excellent. Detailing across the entire frame is good, for you can take sharp images despite shooting with the lens into the sun, where even the flare will get controlled. The exposure is reliable and the results are quite good. The minimum focusing distance is of 20cm when the macro mode is turned on, which does not allow great macro shots but provide for a good background focus. Barrel distortion is noticeable when you are shooting objects that are straight (at edges) and camera does well in correcting the defect.

Screen and Menus

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 uses a menu system that is quite similar to the one used on Alpha cameras by Sony. Navigation is easy, settings can be easily changed and you will find it a familiar experience if have already used Alpha DSLRs. The screen is 3 inches wide with a resolution of 1229k dots.

Battery

Although, Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 comes rated with 220 shots as per the CIPA testing standards, it is able to take more than 200 shots before the battery dies. A rechargeable NP-BX1 type battery has been used here.

Video Mode

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 comes with a number of video options that include 25p, 50p, 50i, MP4 and AVHCD or 60i, 60p, and 24p within the NTSC mode. You can make use of the wind filter and digital steady shot for video stabilization. The video quality is good enough and manual controls can be made use of.

Sensors

Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 offers a 24.3MP resolution sensor, which is of full frame CMOS type wherein the aspect ratios used are 3:2 and 16:9. The ISO sensitivity range begins from ISO50 and goes up to ISO800 via 100, 200, ISO400 marks, for good detail. The noise beyond this - at ISO1600 remains quite low and at ISO3200, the noise becomes lot more noticeable and there is a slight loss in detail. At ISO6400, the noise increases and there is a slight loss in the saturation of color. ISO12800 shows an increment in noise with an extra loss of detail and color. ISO25600 brings out high noise levels though results produce images that can be used by resizing them. This makes default range as 100-25600. Manually, you can extend the range to ISO50. The noise reduction settings in ISO mode are long exposure and high ISO, which can be turned on or off or set to normal.

Pros

  • Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 is, as Sony claims, is the smallest camera with a full-frame sensor today
  • Noise performance is good at high ISO settings
  • Image quality is excellent and shutter is quiet
  • Lens used is Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* f/2.0 type
  • Build quality is quite good
  • Burst mode is 5fps
  • Inbuilt high dynamic range and panorama shooting

Cons

  • Sony CyberShot DSC-RX1 is costly and the accessories are costly as well
  • Battery life is short
  • In camera battery charging
  • JPEG + RAW option cuts down on JPEG quality
  • High dynamic and creative effects can’t be used with RAW shooting
