the lens is of better quality than most phone cameras ,bar a few, and provides 10x optical zoom thats always handy to have.It has no flash and does reasonably well in low light(compared to phone cameras) if you can keep it very still.Best used with an sd card inside to store the pics and video. Pairing the two can take up to 30 sec(xperia z) so plan the shots, even when paired not really suited to fast moving action.
Great idea but these needs to evolve

The product by itself is great, I've used one of these at the showroom. The camera takes great pictures, but it's battery doesn't last long and it also drains the battery of your smartphone. The display on the phone is a bit laggy with the attachment, and the setup needs a bit of time. You can't use your phone apps to control this camera, it comes with its own app. The phones gets stored on the camera and not on your phone, so you have to download them to your phone using PlayMemories Moblie which kills your phone battery like anything. Definitely a great product but it needs revisions and I hope Sony will be making it better in the future...

Very Innovative Camera from Sony - With some issues
by Mac Reviews on 2014-01-29
Sony QX10 is an 18MP, Lens-Style camera. This thing has a lot in common with other point and shoot cameras out there, like the same size sensor, micro sdcard slot, battery, zoom button, tripod mount etc. The one thing it is lacking is a screen/view finder. Sony want you to use your smartphone as a screen to this camera which is done through Sony PlayMemories app, available in both Android Playstore and Apple Appstore. The connection is established via Wifi. If you have an NFC android phone, its easier to setup.
-- > Specs,Image Quality and Ease Of Use
Since this has a bigger sensor,it takes better pictures than a smartphone camera takes. What Sony has done is they took their own DSC-WX200 point and shoot camera and changed the outer body and put that in to a new lens-style camera, thus QX10 was born. This has the same optically stabilized 10x, 25-250mm f/3.3-5.9 lens and 18.2 megapixel Exmor R CMOS 1/2.3"-type image sensor. It has a Sony G lens which is better than the normal Sony glass.
One of the things i dont like about QX10 is that after launching the Playmemories app on the smartphone,it takes atleast 6 seconds to connect to the camera and be ready for shooting. When you move to another app on your phone and switch back to this app again, the connection has to be established again. So another 6 seconds wait .There is also a slight lag when viewing the QX10 display on the smartphone, which increases when the camera it is at full zoom. These small things can really test your patience.Shot to shot time is at least 6 seconds, which means, this is not at all suitable for fast, action shots.
Sony has released a firmware update 3.0. The maximum supported video resolution now is 1920×1080, instead of the 1440×1080 which came default. The other major change in this firmware is that QX10 now support ISO 3200 from ISO 1600 and can be manually selected in Program Auto Mode.
-- > Image Quality is quite good comparing to other compact cameras coming at this price range and with this sized sensor. 10x zoom is a big plus and the image stabilization built in works well. Superior Auto gives 'sharable' night time photos.Images are noise free at ISO 125-400, with limited noise and colour desaturation starting to appear at ISO 800.
You can shoot upto 220 shots with a full charge which is quite good.
-- > Verdict: Sony deserves 5 stars for their innovative approach, but QX10 has many performance issues. This is a pricey point and shoot camera in an unconventional body. For the same price you can get better performing portable point and shoot cameras.
