Sony DSC-H100 Point & Shoot - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Let us cut down to the chase, Sony DSC-H100 Point & Shoot comes with 11 scene modes (Soft Skin, Soft Snap, Day Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, High Sensitivity, Gourmet, Pet, Snow, Beach and Fireworks) and 6 selectable shooting modes via the mode dial – Scene Selection, Intelligent Auto, Program, Manual, Sweep Panorama and Movie. If required you can simply point and shoot without having trouble with exposure settings, you can use the Scene Selection or Intelligent Auto mode. You can use it in Manual mode where you can set ISO, Shutter time & aperture. Its minimum shutter speed is 30sec. You can crop, eliminate red eye and shift the focal centre in camera. Further, save the edited version as a new image with full 16 megapixels. This gives you the advantage of not losing quality if you crop and enlarge the photo later. It is a 21x optical zoom and 42x digital zoom, offering you fantastic clarity of far objects , coupled with a 16.1 MP Super HAD CCD image sensor. The camera lets you mess around with its active and fun modes while letting you grab it and shoot the wild also. Its TFT inch clear photo LCD screen gives it an extra edge, with good clarity expected at playbacks. Sony Dsc H-100 digicam also features Smile Shutter, Red-eye Correction, Smart Zoom and Hi-speed USB! Is available only in black, with a weight of 515g (including batteries) and with dimensions; which would be : 122.9mm (W) x 83.2mm (H) x 81.3mm (D).

Design and Build Quality

Sony DSC-H100 looks a lot like an entry level DSLR, all compliments to the large lens housing and the bulge for grip. The grip is strong, primarily because of its rubberized texture, giving you a strong confident feel but it is slightly more bulge from its counter parts megazoom cameras since Sony DSC-H100 uses AA batteries. Including this battery the camera weighs about 515 gram, being a tad more for a travel zoom camera. The camera may give off a complicated look but it isn’t in reality. In fact, the controls are easy to use unlike many travel zoom cameras - the buttons are larger and well-spread, which ultimately makes navigating menus and changing settings more comfortable. The control panel has a five way D-pad and specific buttons for playback. The D-pad is quite handy with shortcuts for flash settings, display info, smile shutter and self-timer.

Focus and Face Detection

The Face Detection option can be find in its menu and can be selected to priorities faces of children and adults. Also, present is a setting for Smile Detection Sensitivity that can be changed as per your liking: from slight to normal or BIG smile. It’s easy as you select smile shutter from the D-pad Sony DSC-H100 clicks the subject as soon as it detects the ranged smile. It’s fun and perky. Its focus is clean and clear even at its maximum zoom.

Lens and Image Stabilization

This camera is not a thoroughly for professionals but for every alike, meant to make picture taking easy for all with a great advantage of a long zoom lens that starts from 25mm and races up to 525mm, making it a whooping 21x optical zoom. This zoom gives it the edge and makes it easy to shoot larger groups of people or a wider area, perhaps even wide landscapes without the havoc of moving a lot. Sony DSC-H100 comes with a optical image stabilization mechanism, this, as obvious by its name, counteracts the shakiness of the capturer and hence, prevents blurry or smudgy photos. This is a key feature and is very useful at full zoom and in low light environment. The aperture at large at wide is f/3.1 and at telephoto is f/5.8, not too glamorous, but it works.

Screen and Menus

Sony DSC-H100 is represented by a 3-inch TFT Clear Photo LCD screen. The resolution for this one is 460K dots; for your shooting and viewing. It’s an escape from the low-resolution, 230K dots screens found on most entry-level cameras. The Playback mode is very interesting; by simply pressing the menu button it brings up a menu from which you can start a slideshow with music or touch up photos. Minor editing includes that, you can rotate, crop and sharpen photos and even get rid of those rather annoying red eye. The menus are easy for almost everyone to use, navigation is kind to the user, certainly that eliminates people from worrying too much while they shoot.

Battery

Battery Type is AA Alkaline Battery, 4 at a time. This can be a bonus as well as a setback depending on your usage. If you are going out or hiking, this pays for you with a good battery life and leaves without a worry to run about a power socket. It offers 250 shots, decent with the features it carries.

Video Mode

Sony DSC-H100 shoots videos at 720p and the good thing is, optical zoom is available during video shooting. The recording works well on an overall basis, in fact the panning is smooth too and the video seemed un-shaken even while zoomed. The only thing that can be sad is that there is not a dedicated button for video recording, so one has to switch to the Movie mode and press the shutter release to start or pause/stop video recording.

Sensors

This pretty camera comprises of a 16.1 megapixel, which is 11.04mm Super HAD CCD Sensor. Capable and conducts a decent sensitivity range-from ISO 80 to 3200. The BIONZ processor is effective, since it keeps images relatively clean even at a high ISO as 800. The lens quality is brilliant and absolutely nilch chromatic aberration i.e. color splitting happens at the edges of the picture even when directly shooting at the sun!

Pros

The camera with this range, this one certainly has a very High Zoom capacity. The AA Pencil batteries used makes the camera highly usable for long tours and picnics etc. Plenty of modes given, enables user to experiment and enjoy his experience. It has the ability to be plugged to a TV via AV cables and with that you can enjoy pictorial slides. Also, TV can be used as a display screen for your captures. The camera lastly is a plus for giving you a feel of a DSLR at a price reasonable.

Cons

It’s slightly heavy to carry around but compared to a DSLR and the kit it comes with, this is a bargain one can make. The Manual Focus Adjustment is clearly not an option here, so that is a set back and lastly there is a bit of a glitch in the zoom functionality in the video mode, just slight but its present.

Zoom : The zoom can be set to Precision mode to 42x or Smart mode 21x. 42x works good but you have to use a tripod. Zoom is useless without a Tripod.
