Sony DSC-H400 Point & Shoot Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Sony H400 camera comes with a 20 megapixels CCD sensor and a 63x optical zoom lens that is equivalent to 24.5 – 1550mm, in 35mm equivalents. The OSS IS (Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization) mechanism has been provided to keep the shots stable. The DSLR styling allows you to hold the camera quite steadily with a large rubber grip. The inbuilt electronic viewfinder (EVF) enables another point of contact to aid the camera grip when full zoom is used. The 3 inches screen at the back comes with 460k dots resolution. The camera features an intelligent auto mode and is full of manual controls. Also on offer are sweep panorama, video recording/720p, digital filters and a number of scene modes. The device uses a lithium-ion rechargeable battery that gives 300 shots. Overall, this bridge camera is a good bargain for shutterbugs who want to hone their photographic skills.

Design and Build Quality

Sony H400 camera comes encased in a solid plastic body. The handgrip is slightly rubberized with indentation for fingers to aid gripping. At the back of the camera, there are textured areas for thumb, though these aren't rubberized. The physical controls are well placed, so one can have a quick approach with just a right hand. At the left of the camera, there is a button to release the pop flash. At the top, there is a button to switch between LCD and electronic viewfinder. The viewfinder is very small but features dioptre correction when needed. The view from it is reasonable but based on its size, you can figure out that it is a budget camera. The basic benefit of the electronic viewfinder is that you can get steady shot when using full zoom. If you wear glasses, then viewfinder from EVF will become frustrating.

Focus and Face Detection

Sony H400 camera offers 1cm of macro mode as its focal length. Its focusing modes are; Autofocus, Face Detection, AF Tracking and Multi. The shutter response is not quick unlike other cameras and at full zoom, focusing can be very slow at times.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Sony H400 camera offers a maximum aperture range of f/3.4 – f/6.5. In 35mm terms, the focal length ranges from 24.5mm to 1550mm. It covers the super zoom range of up to 63x. The macro performance of the lens is good, for it focuses on the subject just 1cm away from the lens' front. Chromatic aberrations and purple fringing can be seen in areas of contrast like surrounding tree branches. The defect is more visible at the edges and at the corners of the image. When you are using the full optical zoom, the defect becomes even more stronger. The optical image stabilization feature helps you to take shot at full zoom, given that you have very steady hands to capture what you desire. Across the frame, the detailing is quite good. The more you zoom, the less becomes the detail. Both distortion effects, barrel and pincushion are well controlled. Also, a bit of vignetting can be observed at times.

Screen and Menus

In Sony H400 camera, the setting options are quite easy, for either you can use the 4 way controller or use the button. When you press the menu button, it shows up with a number of options that can be altered on the screen at the back, so that you needn't dive too deep into the menus. If you wish to dive into the menu system layers, then you'd have to scroll to the bottom of the list and select the setup option for changing the advanced settings. When you use outdoors settings, the screen is clear and comes with an anti-reflective coating. The size of the screen is of 3 inches and has a resolution of 460k dots.

Sony H400 camera runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion NP-BX1 battery pack. An AC adapter also comes with the bundle called AC-UB10C. You can get 300 shots over full charge as per CIPA/Sony testing standards. This shot count is however, average and it is recommended that you carry a spare, should you wish to go out on a day long trip for shooting.

Video Mode

Sony H400 camera records videos in 720p resolution only. This is a sad part, since most of the other cameras in the same genre offer Full HD/1080p recording. The frame size you get in HD shooting is of 1280 x 720 pixels. The sound comes in monaural format and not stereo format. You can use the optical zoom while recording the video. Since the zoom not a normal one but super zoom, it is recommended that you use a tripod while in movie mode. The quality of videos rendered by the cam is plausible.

Sony H400 camera offers a CCD type 20.1 megapixels sensor with a size of 1/2.3-inch. The width and height of the pixels are 5152 and 3864 respectively. The aspect ratio that is used for cropping is 4:3. Coming to the ISO noise performance, at ISO80 and ISO100, some noise is visible. When you view the images at 100 percent, you see that they are acceptable. At ISO200, the noise increases slowly and fine detail drops. At ISO400, the noise increases even more, and there is more drop in the detail, though the results can still be used. At ISO800, noise aggravates and image quality dies, also in the frame is the emergence of minor color shift. At ISO1600, the noise becomes strong enough. At ISO3200, catching images is hopeless.

  • Sony H400 camera offers optical zoom lens with zoom power of up to 63x, unbelievable since most super cameras of today offers 50x
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization feature
  • Manual controls
  • Good bargain
  • Macro mode's minimum focus distance is 1cm
  • Backlight mode and iAuto
  • The EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) comes with dioptre correction

  • Sony H400 camera delivers poor panoramas
  • Picture effects are limited
  • Electronic Viewfinder is small
  • Above ISO400, the detail is lost
  • Only HD video recording, quite saddening as most of the contemporary cams in this category offer Full HD video recording
  • Purple fringing defect can be seen in images
