Sony ILCE-7 24.3MP Camera Body only Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Mirrorless compacts are one of the most efficient photography devices available and pretty much the most advanced as of now. As such, Sony ILCE 7 is a typical Compact System Camera that comes embedded with a full frame sensor. The camera was launched in October 2013 where it made its debut alongside the higher end Sony ILCE 7r. These two together are pretty much the world’s smallest and lightest dedicated full frame devices. Also, it is important to note that Sony Leica has offered its M series devices with full frame sensors and interchangeable lenses, but these camera are much larger, heavier and come packing with manual focus functionality only. Sony also offered full frame compact cameras such as Sony RX1 and Sony RX1r, but although, they are simply mirrorless, they do not really sport interchangeable lenses on their systems. Sony ILCE 7 and its sister device ILCE 7r are almost identical, the only difference between these two cameras is of the sensor lying underneath, for while Sony ILCE comes packing with a 24.3 megapixels full frame sensor with phase detect AF system, the more expensive Sony ILCE 7r bundles up 36.4 megapixels with low pass filter removed but no space for phase detect AF points. The full frame sensors on both Sony ILCE 7 and 7r are appropriately larger than the traditional APS-C and Micro Four Thirds sensor normally used in most of the mirrorless system cameras, this allows not a very deep depth of field effects at the same aperture build and superior noise quality too. Like all the NEX models however, this camera does not sport a built-in stabilisation, instead, the camera relies on optically stabilised lenses so as to iron out any sort of wobble.

Beyond the measuring point of sensors, Sony ILCE 7 and 7r are actually very much identical. The compact bodies of cameras look not much dissimilar to Olympus OMD models and offer the users the choice to choose large XGA OLED viewfinder, which is roughly the same image size as that of Sony’s OMD EM1 or the 3 inches tilting screen that is used for efficient composition, dust and moisture resistance, Wi-Fi functionalities and NFC. You can download many apps and expand the functionality of the camera. There is a Full HD 1080p video quality available at 24/25p, 60/50i or 60/50p, and the slideshows of the camera actually output up to 4k over HDMI sets or Wi-Fi. Bracketing in the camera is actually limited to 3 or 5 frames at up to 3EV respectively with the maximum shutter available being 1/8000, and the option of microphone and headphone jacks being available for focus peaking. With actually a claim of a full frame image quality, which could come out better than Canon EOS 5D Mark III in a smaller, cheaper and lighter package, Sony ILCE 7 is actually an amazing choice for anyone, enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Design and Build Quality

We are absolutely fond of the styling provided for Sony Alpha A7, for it is actually styled like a mini DSLR and with a combination of curves and flat angular surfaces, this at the first glance, looks highly severe to some, but we, as mentioned before, love it. Sony ILCE 7 measures 127mm x 94mm x 48.2mm and weighs a good 474 grams when included the battery and card, and surprisingly, it is very small and light when you consider the full frame sensor that lies inside. Sony ILCE 7r is of the same size but is actually 9 grams lighter because it is made up of slightly different materials. Indeed, Sony Alpha A7 and A7r are more or less the same size and weight as Olympus OMD EM1, which comes with dimensions of 130mm x 94mm x 30mm and 496 grams of battery life. Now, although Olympus EM1 comes out to be a bit on the thicker size, it is the thickness of the chunkier grip that increases comfort, so nobody is complaining about that. Another comparison that we have to make against another Micro Four Thirds compact is Olympus OMD EM5 with dimensions of 121mm x 90mm x 42mm and weight of 425 grams (battery included.) You need to remember however, that all Olympus bodies include the built-in stabilisation feature that works with any lens you attach to it.

Focus and Face Detection

Sony ILCE 7 works as a hybrid AF system that only makes use of a combination of high-end contrast based and embedded phase detect functionalities; this is really a major difference when it comes to AutoFocus in Sony ILCE 7 and Sony ILCE 7r that lack the phase detect points of AF and are only contrast based to be precise. The contrast based AF system of Sony ILCE 7 splits up most of the frames into 25 areas, which then can be selected automatically in a Multi Point mode. Zone weighted and Centre weighted options are also available in the camera, so is the opportunity to place an AF area manually almost anywhere on screen, thus making the use of rocker controls. This Flexible Spot mode also allows one to resize the AF area as small, medium or large. The AF system of the camera works exactly down to 0EV lighting levels.

Lens and Image Stabilization

The lens on any camera is like the breath of it. Sony ILCE 7 comes packing with a dedicated E mount that is compatible with all the existing E mount lenses in the NEX camera array along with a new range of FE lenses that are designed specifically for full frame use. The camera does not feature any sort of inbuilt image stabilisation, so if you want to iron out any sort of wobbles in pictures, you will need optical stabilised lenses. Sony has launched Sony ILCE 7 with 5 native FE lenses wherein, all 5 lenses are weather sealed and feature internal focusing for crisp, quick and quiet operation.

The four lenses available are:

· 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 stabilised zoom
· Carl Zeiss 24-70mm f4 stabilised zoom
· Carl Zeiss 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8 primes
· 70-200mm f4 G telephoto zoom with stabilisation

Screen and Menus

Screen: If you prefer, you can actually compose images with the 3 inches/ 921k dot pixel screen. The speciality of this screen is that it can very efficiently tilt to either face directly upwards or down at an angle or at the waist height so that the shooting becomes much more convenient. Annoyingly however, the screen on this camera is not fully articulated, thus preventing similar benefits to reach those who want to shoot in portrait mode. Now that there is a lack of full articulation, it also means that you can not really fold the screen on itself for protection or towards self portraits.

EVF: As we know, Sony ILCE 7 is a 100% Live View camera that comes with a dedicated choice of a screen or EVF that can be used for effective composition. This viewfinder is typically one of the best electronic models that we have had the pleasure of using. As such, there is an additional OLED panel with XGA resolution 1024 x 768p or 2.359 million dots to be precise, and a huge 0.71x magnification. This places Sony ILCE 7 pretty much roughly on par with Olympus OMD EM1 when talking in terms of size and resolution, for there is this native 4:3 aspect ratio in the camera, which means that images fill the panel and appear much taller.

Battery

Sony ILCE 7 derives its power source in the form of NP-FW50 battery, which as per claims made by Sony, is good only for around 270 images under CIPA standard. In real conditions though, while shooting, the battery lasted through a very heavy day, but if you are taking the camera as a travelling option and need to shoot many videos on the go, you definitely would want to carry a spare battery with you.

Video Mode

Sony ILCE 7 comes with highly advanced and capable movie recording functionalities wherein, movies can be easily recorded in Full HD mode or 1080p at all the existing frame rates of 60p/50p, 60i/50i or 24p/25p. Moreover, there is an entire layer of manual controls that work over exposures and continuously AF while filming. There is also the option of focus peaking while recording, adjustable audio level meters, uncompressed HDMI output, film and plackback using the screen or EVF.

Sensors

Sony ILCE 7 comes with a full framed 24.3 megapixels sensor that measures 35.8m x 23.9mm and delivers a maximum resolution worth 6000 x 4000 pixels. Sony ILCE 7r is packed with a 36.8 megapixels sensor and hence, delivers images worth a maximum resolution of 7360 x 4912 pixels. Both the reviewed devices offer amazing sensitivity ranges worth 100-25,600 ISO, which can then be expanded to low-end to include options like 50, 64 and 80 ISO options.
