TVC iCAM FHD18 is good looking. but mediocre in performance considering the price tag
by Sunaabh Sarkar on 2014-05-13

The performance of the camcorder is dismal and much below expectation. In the discounted price tag, one can easily get a good, branded, higher MP, point and shoot camera with video recording facility.

The video is captured in the 5MP mode which is the maximum image sensor capability. The 18 MP interpolated image captures doesn't match the wonders of a true 18MP CCD image sensor. So it is more of a 5MP camera video recording feature.

In very basic layman terms, it would help understand by Imagining projecting an image of an object on a graph paper with a very large number of grids (18MP) to that of projecting the same image on a graph paper with lesser number of grids 5MP. Certainly the image on the lesser number of grids will be coarser (will have more defined jagged edges) than the one on the larger mesh of grids. However, the image formed on the coarser matrix can be made to look like one produced by a 18 MP matrix by digitally doctoring it (by adding to the original image pixels, digitally generated pixels of similar colors and other properties). However the jagged edges in the original image will not change much no matter how many pixels are added (interpolated to make it look like one produced by 18MP image sensor)). The final image recorded will be limited to what has been projected on the coarse matrix. What people are actually paying for in these types of camcorders, is primarily for the firmware with the interpolating engine embedded in the camera, and not for more number of image sensors in the CCD. A true 18MP CCD sensor has a sensor matrix much much finer than the sensor matrix of a 5MP CCD and can capture images in resolutions much superior to that obtained by interpolating a 5MP capture to 18MP, and hence are priced stiffer too. This is the very reason why some camcorder seem exorbitantly priced than another with specification sound similar. One has to be very clear about this factor while choosing a camcorder.

Considering the price tag of iCAM18FHD, I was expecting a better interpolation engine churning out decent quality images with lesser noise to make it stand out in its category. Unfortunately this is not the case. The camcorder boasts of 3in touch screen LCD monitor. I found the the touch screen is not adequately sensitive. Probably its not the capacitative type. It needed quite a few pushes on the icons to get them working particulary with the light option resulting in unwanted jerks. The menu sports limited features. An eyepiece would have helped in conserving battery which is drained by powering the LCD monitor constantly during shooting.

Though the Camcorder feels ergometrically good, however, the shooting buttons could have been a shade more softer to avoid camera shake while clicking stills. Though the body is made out of plastic, It is not known if the lenses used are also made of plastic. The lens comes with a transparent removable protection film, but once that is removed, it has no protection. For the price it charges, the company could have easily included a lens cap for protection of the lens. A gentle twist of the lens ring toggles between macro and standard shooting modes. The macro recording is a welcome desirable feature for those who are interested in macro videography. The bundled software has basic video editing capabilities and is suited most for novices. No wonder this camcorder is for novices in videography.

Delivery can turn out to be an issue with the principal company marketing the product. It can take between 10 to 11 days for a Metro City delivery. So plan well in advance if you are contemplating gifting this product.

On the whole, even after the discount of 4200/- offered by the principal company marketing the product, and a few other features like slow motion recording etc, etc, I consider the Camcorder to be grossly overpriced in its category.

Pathetic
by zenfd on 2014-08-05

I have been a flipkart.com customer since the time it was launched. I really liked the way they took care of the customers, however my satisfaction was short-lived. I am currently facing one's worst fears of on-line shopping.

I had purchased this product (OD40724089987) from flipkart, it was a gift for a friend. When the product arrived, it didn't work, we thought it was because the memory card was not there, therefore we ordered for a memory card, however even after that, the product didn't work. We took the product to the seller's workshop (which was located in one god damn corner of Mumbai), the seller accepted that there is a problem with the product and replaced it with another one. The next day we realised even the replaced product didn't work properly (i.e irrespective of how many hours we charged, the battery got drained out in 7-8 mins), therefore we requested flipkart for a refund. It was very shocking to see that how easily flipkart rejected my refund request stating that the seller has rejected it, without even finding out a proper reason (I had provided all these details in my first e-mail to flipkart but nobody bothered to read).

Then I called up the seller (TVC) to ask why did they reject the refund request, when I narrated the story, the seller agreed for a refund and asked me to get in touch with flipkart as the product was not directly purchased from them. When I again contacted flipkart, the first response I received was that I should ask the seller for a refund, I got extremely upset with this lousy attitude and wanted to escalate the matter, however nobody transferred my calls to a supervisor at the call centre. I provided all my details; i,e my bank account details as well as the address from where the item has to be picked up; over the phone as well as on e-mail but I didn't get any further response.

Today I was told by the supervisor to write to the disputes team and when I did, guess what, the e-mail bounced back because the e-mail id didn't exist. I am still waiting for a call/ e-mail from flipkart. Its been a nightmare dealing with these people who don't seem to understand my problem. I am still hopeful that they will turn around and address my complaint to my satisfaction, lets see if they meet my expectations.
