HP Chromebook 14-x010nr (Nvidia Tegra K1/2GB/16GB eMMC/Chrome OS) - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Being one of the top computer and desktop vendors in the world does boost your credibility and impacts the most important thing - sales. Even though we have seen many computer vendors jump into the smartphone bandwagon, HP's core competency remains in providing desktops and laptops. And that is why, HP laptops get noticed more often than not with HP Chromebook 14 being another example of the same.

HP Chromebook is a 14 inches tablet that looks a lot more premium than a lot of its counterparts in the past. The device has a length of 13.54 inches, a breadth of 9.45 inches and a thickness of 0.7 inches. Probably one of the more slimmer notebooks from HP, HP Chromebook is also quite light weighing just 4 pounds.

Under the hood, HP Chromebook uses a NVIDIA tegra K1 processor. The device also has 2GB of RAM, which may not auger well with some of the users and might fall short during extreme multitasking. The internal memory for the device is 16GB, which is alright if you are not big on keeping a large data collection but in case you do, there is a slot for a microSD card wherein you can enhance the storage capacity to a certain extent but not to the extent of a conventional laptop.

HP Chromebook has a TrueVision web camera at the front, which does a decent job as far as clicking selfies is concerned, or getting some face time via web calling. However, the shutter is not as useful for taking professional level photographs. And as far as the battery is concerned, HP Chromebook is powered by a 45 W AC adaptor that uses 3 battery cells and delivers a usage time of up to 8 hours. Consequently, users would be able to multitask, access websites, download data, or watch movies for a longer duration without running out of gas earlier than desired.

Design

HP Chromebook is quite conventional in a lot of ways when it comes to the design with the device reminding us of the DV pavilion series. The sleeker appearance makes HP Chromebook quite attractive especially when it is closed. Its notebook like feel and appearance is further accentuated with Silver color. The dimensions of the laptop include a length of 13.5 inches, a breadth of 9.4 inches and a thickness of 0.7 inches.

Performance

HP Chromebook uses Chrome operating system, which should deliver a faster web accessing facility while users can also download plenty of data from the web, without any glitches and holdbacks. The laptop has a decent set of hardware as well in the form of 2GB of RAM and a NVIDIA K1 Tegra processor that would boost the performance of the device while playing games, downloading data, surfing web and doing multitasking.

Gaming

HP Chromebook can be used to download loads of games from the web but the device would not have as big a domain as some of the other popular platforms including Android and Windows. Therefore, game lovers would feel a bit hard done here.

Connectivity

HP Chromebook features plenty in the connectivity department with one USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports, while there are slots for a microphone input, a HDMI port and a microSD card reader. Users can access wireless Internet through Wi-Fi while data can be exchanged with other devices too through Bluetooth.

Screen and Sound

HP Chromebook comes with a 14 inches capacitive touchscreen backed by the Anti-glare LED backlight, making sure that users can watch videos and images from any angle without any uncomfortable reflections from the sides. This mechanism makes sure that users do not get any kind  of itch or uncomfortable feeling after watching a video for a long time. The resolution for the screen is of 1366 by 768 pixels, which is a decent figure and delivers crisp and clear images.

Comparisons

HP is not the first and the only company to have a Chromebook with the likes of Samsung and Toshiba giving it a decent competition.

HP Chromebook when compared to Samsung Chromebook 2 has a larger display with the former featuring a 14 inches screen and the latter, a 11.6 inches screen. HP Chromebook is heavier than Samsung Chromebook 2 with the former weighing 3.95 pounds and the latter 2.65 pounds. HP Chromebook runs on a Tegra processor whereas Samsung Chromebook 2 runs on a Celeron 2.16GHz processor. RAM is of 2GB for both the devices, while it is the same with internal memory for featuring 16GB each. There is no information about the kind of graphics card HP Chromebook features but Samsung Chromebook 2 comes with an Intel HD Graphics card.

Similarly, compared to Toshiba Chromebook 2, HP Chromebook is again a bit heavier weighing 3.95 pounds, while the former weighs 2.95 pounds. Toshiba Chromebook 2 runs on a Celeron processor clocking in at 2.16GHz while HP Chromebook uses a Tegra processor. RAM is 2GB with Toshiba Chromebook 2 and the internal memory is of 16GB, thus matching the stats of HP Chromebook. Toshiba Chromebook 2 also uses an Intel HD graphics processor.

Pros

HP Chromebook is going to be one of the most economical laptops and does not compromise on size with a large 14 inches display screen. The fact that HP Chromebook can be used as a full-fledged laptop at an economical price comes as a huge incentive for potential consumers.

Cons

HP Chromebook is a tricky device to buy since it is available at a price range which is affordable but offers specs that are nearby a tablet. But its display size and keyboard give it a laptop like feel. HP Chromebook's 2GB RAM therefore, can be interpreted as a bit low in comparison. The 16GB internal memory can also be said to be insufficient for people who love to keep a larger data collection including songs, games, images and videos.
