HP EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

HP has lately introduced its two new Elitebooks named EliteBook Folio 1020 and EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition. The company claims the two offerings to be the lightest and thinnest business notebooks in the world, with a thickness of 15.7mm. EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition is the lighter of the two by weighing just 2.2lbs and is equipped with several wonderful and advanced features. It hosts a 12.5 inches QHD display and offers front facing speakers with DTS Studio sound and the HD audio technology with HP Noise reduction software. The notebook boasts of passing military grade testing that stamps it as a highly sturdy laptop.

The device comes powered by Intel Core M processor backed by 8GB of RAM. It offers 180GB-256GB SSD for storage too. The fanless design of this laptop makes it ultra light and helps to enable a noiseless operation. HP EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition comes with a host of security features like a fingerprint reader, a Trusted Platform Module, and a pre-boot authentication among others, which are not found in other notebooks except those from Dell. Overall, the device<span style=""font-family:" 'lucida="" sans="" unicode',="" sans-serif;="" font-size:="" 8pt;="" line-height:="" 115%;"=""> </span>is a business-oriented notebook that is sleek and stylish and offers industry-leading security features.</p> <p></p>

The design of HP EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition is clearly inspired by Apple MacBook Air and HP has gone all out to ensure that this device is lighter and slimmer than MacBook Air - it measures just 15.7 in thickness and weighs a mere 1.2Kg. Its magnesium-alloy and reusable carbon fibre construction is the reason behind its lightweight yet sturdy and thin chassis. With such compact measurements, this notebook is primarily meant for the mobile users. The newly designed HP Premium back-lit keyboard offers a consistent key response. The keys have been evenly spaced out and are perfectly heightened to facilitate effortless typing. The TouchPad is ergonomically appropriate too.

The machine has passed military grade drop and shock tests. No wonder, it is robust and very sturdy and can easily withstand drops, shocks along with temperature, humidity and pressure fluctuations.  The “always on” capability of this notebook helps in tracking it even when it is turned off.

HP EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition gets Intel’s latest Core M ultra power efficient processor for a power-packed performance. It offers 8GB of RAM along with 128-256GB of SSD, making it amenable to heavy multi-tasking. Its quiet, fanless operation is highly commendable. It runs on Windows 8 Operating system. The battery of the notebook is rated to deliver around 9 hours of usage time. Full proof security features of HP EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition include pre-boot authentication, Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2/2.0, fingerprint reader and the exclusive HP Sure Start self-healing BIOS software, ensuring users get the necessary security for serious enterprise grade operations, even while on the move.

In order to make the design slim and light weight, HP equips this device with an Intel Core M processor and integrates with Intel's graphics 5300 processor. As such, the gaming capabilities of the device are limited to casual games only, for hardcore games do not run smoothly on this system.

The compact size of this notebook notwithstanding, HP equips it with all the major ports - 2 USB 3.0 ports, a microSD slot, power slot and a HDMI video output slot. For networking and communication purposes, it offers Widi, Miracast and WLAN 802.11. This ultraportable device sports a 720p webcam to facilitate seamless video chats.

Screen and Sound

The device comes with a 12.5 inches diagonal Edp, ultra-slim QHD (2560 X 1440p), UWVA  display that does not offer a touchscreen like the HP EliteBook Folio 1020. The display is bright and crisp. The anti-glare nature of the screen helps in minimizing strain on the eyes. But the colours of the screen are not as hyper-realistic as those offered on the rival units. The inbuilt speakers create a wonderful soundstage with the help of technologies like HD Audio and DTS Studio sound. The integrated dual array microphone also performs well. The special noise cancellation software bundle lets you work with more concentration.

Being ultra light and ultra thin, HP EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition competes against many ultraportable devices like Dell XPS, Lenovo ThinkPad X1, and Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus. But its main rival is Apple MacBook Air as this HP Notebook takes inspiration from Apple's design philosophy and beats it in the department.

The highly portable and fanless design of HP EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition makes this notebook stand out from the crowd. It is really commendable that HP has managed to surpass Apple MacBook in the design department. The vibrant display is another highlight of the machine. The performance is satisfactory and the device is ideal for all-day comfort and usage.

One of the major shortcomings of this machine is that it does not have a touchscreen option. The battery life of nine hours is not too long either and one will have to stay tethered to work for longer stretches. Also, the ForcePad technology is not easy to use for it removes the clicking aspect of the touchpad. MacBook Air offers up to twelve hours of battery life while the HP machine can work for up to nine hours only on a single charge. The Intel Core i5 processor of MacBook Air is more efficient than the Intel Core M processor here and offers a stronger performance. But the Apple Notebook offers a smaller internal memory of just 4GB while HP Notebook comes with 8GB of RAM. Talking of the pricing, HP  EliteBook Folio 1020 Special Edition sports a higher price tag than Apple MacBook Air.
