Lenovo LaVie Z Black - Expert Reviews
There is something about the world of new technology where everything seems to be getting thinner and lighter while at the same time, bigger in size. This new development lends itself not only to the smartphones but also to other devices such as laptops. We have already seen devices like Lenovo Yoga Tablet or ThinkPad raise the bar and now, Lenovo LaVie Z does that as well. In fact, we would go ahead on a limb and say that Lenovo LaVie Z is the lightest laptop in the market and can even feel like a 10 inches tablet. The material used for building the device is a Magnesium-Lithium alloy case. The device has a 13.3 inches LED anti-glare screen that can be bent around by up to 360 degrees via the 360 degree flat hinge.
The space provided for the device is not huge at 128GB but is good enough for anyone who is not that big on storing a large amount of data. There is a SD card slot, which means users can enhance the memory size should they want to. The laptop is not that strong as far as its battery is concerned with the device lasting for just 6 hours as per the official figures. So, in due course of time, one can imagine the usage time to decrease further, which is not a good sign for anyone who prefers heavy usage.
Lenovo LaVie Z is the lightest laptop we have come across till date with its 4GB version weighing 1.72 pounds and the 8GB version weighing 2.04 pounds. The light weight can be attributed to the Super light Magnesium-Lithium Alloy case. The dimensions of the device feature a length of 319mm, a breadth of 212mm and a thickness of 16.9mm. As far as its appearance is concerned, Lenovo LaVie Z is pretty conservative and we feel that Lenovo lost out on a chance to cash in on its incredible built. For the dull designing and an one dimensional feel do not exactly make Lenovo LaVie Z stand out.
Lenovo LaVie Z does a very good job when it comes to multitasking and running high end applications with ease and smoothness. The Intel Core i5 and i7 processors are the options from which the user can choose wherein, both the versions do well in delivering fast paced operations. The RAM of 8GB or even the lower 4GB variant would provide a decent multitasking experience.
For a strong gaming environment, one would look for a decent hardware and software background and if you want to run some really demanding games, then the word "decent" would have to be replaced by "really good". With Lenovo LaVie Z, you get options between i5 and i7 Intel core 5th generation processors where both are more than decent options. In terms of RAM too, the 4GB version does well but it is the 8GB variant that really reaps fruits for the gaming lovers. The operating system is fine with Microsoft Windows 8.1, which can be further upgraded to the higher versions as well.
You pretty much get all the basic connectivity features that one would expect from a laptop - two USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI output, one SD card and a headphone jack. Users can access Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well for wireless Internet and data transfer, respectively.
Screen and Sound
Lenovo LaVie Z comes with a 13.3 inches LED anti-glare screen, where the qHD display works with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels and uses the IGZO panel technology. There are no complaints as far as the image quality is concerned with clear results depicting accurate color accuracy and saturation. The sound quality is alright and should be enough for an user sitting closely to the device. However, it certainly does not give you that thumping sound with heavy bass, which you expect from most laptops.
Lenovo LaVie Z faces tough competition from Lenovo Yoga Pro 3. The latter of the two has done really well in the Indian market and has received rave reviews too.
In terms of aesthetics, Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 wins hands down with a beautifully crafted exterior that can bend and rotate as per your whims and fancies. There are a lot of colorful options for the outer body as well, which is not provided for in Lenovo LaVie Z. Although in terms of its build quality, Lenovo LaVie Z is insanely light and much easier to carry around than Lenovo Yoga Pro 3. And as far as the display sizes are concerned, both devices have a 13.3 inches screen and as far as the image quality is concerned, they are pretty much at par.
Under the hood, Lenovo LaVie Z uses Intel Core i5 or i7 processors and provides the option of 4GB and 8GB of RAM. Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 comes with a dual-core processor from Intel Core M 5Y70 that clocks in at 1.1GHz. RAM is 8GB with Lenovo Yoga Pro 3. In terms of software platform too, both the devices match up with Microsoft Windows 8.1 in their arsenal.
Lenovo LaVie Zis an extremely light laptop that could be dubbed as the lightest we have seen till date. It feels undeniably thin and almost sets up a benchmark for the future notebooks to follow for all the manufacturers.
Lenovo LaVie Z is not the best looking laptop in market and looking at the competition from the likes of Yoga Tablet from Lenovo, it is far from it. The design is rather dull. Also, the battery usage is said to last for up to 6 hours, which is not that long and certainly less than what one would expect from average laptops in the market.
