Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 4015D - Expert Reviews
The smartphone era becomes more and more complex as the devices evolve into products that offer more features than they ever have. Technology is becoming hard to keep exclusive as companies are able to catch up with innovations of other firms faster and more comprehensively than they have before. A company like Alcatel, which has found it difficult to penetrate the Indian market with the same intensity as they have done globally, would probably now have their best chances to make an impact. Android as an open source software platform has placed a lot of companies on the same pedestal and made a lot of things even for tier1 and tier2 brands. So with a little bit of smart work a firm like Alcatel can deliver better performance. That is exactly what they would be hoping to do with Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 which is mid range smartphone that has quite a funky appearance to it with colored back panel and a pebble like shape much like Corby from Samsung.
Its 3.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen is served by a prudent resolution of 320 by 480 pixels and a likewise pixel density of 165ppi. The smartphone has the optional dual-SIM facility which can enable to encompass two GSM SIM's at the same time in activated state. The device is available in two colors - Green and Pink. The dimensions of the gadgets include a length of 112.5mm, a breadth of 62mm and a thickness of 12mm. It features the dual-core 1.2GHz processor subsidized by the 512MB RAM that puts together a decent ensemble for playing games and executing various multimedia applications. Addition of Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system to this partnership would make things even more convenient for the users to enjoy latest games and access all the popular applications. Memory segment is firm with a 4GB intrinsic memory cushioned by 32GB microSD card slot which can upgrade the storage space even further.
Camera department looks subdued with a mediocre 2 megapixel camera that can snap able bodied images at a resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels. Video recordings are also not good either but the biggest disappointment is the absence of a secondary camera that really pushes back the credibility of the smartphone. Internet, on the other hand gives us something to cheer about as apart from the basic Wi-Fi and GPRS, HTML5 browser facilities, it gives Wi-Fi tethering feature that would please everyone. The users can as a result make the device as an individual server and allow other gadgets to access the web through it. The power backup does not disappoint either as with a 1300mAh standard lithium-ion battery, a good amount of talk time and standby time is churned with up to 6 hours and 48 minutes for the former along with up to 433 hours for the latter. This is in 2G but the talktime for 3G reduces by quite a margin with just upto 2 hours and 48 minutes. Standby time in 3G is upto 325 hours.
Operating system and UI
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 gives a 3.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen compensated by 256k colors along with a resolution of 320 by 480 pixels. Pixel density is 165ppi which is not as much one would have liked but the pictures obtained are not bad in the end. Powered by the accelerometer sensor, Alcatel One Touch Pop C1does have some problem with glaring reflection from certain angles but overall it does well.
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 can be used as a bank of customized playlist of songs designed according to genre, artists and albums with the help of the music player. Formats that the music player runs music include mp3, AAC+ and WAV. Video player plays videos in the Mp4, H.264 and H.263 formats at a reasonable quality. FM radio is the final multimedia elements that unlike music player cannot play desired songs but provide access to popular radio stations in the relevant cities.
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 has suppressed camera department as compared what we were expecting. 2 megapixels is just not enough if the smartphone wants to compete against the devices of its price range. Resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels aids the camera as camera zoom is the only side feature for photography to count on. The biggest setback comes though with the absence of a secondary camera.
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 has a first grade Internet support system with GPRS, EDGE and HTML5 browser making sure that the users can enjoy the services of various websites like Facebook and YouTube at a good pace. The downloading speed is up to 21mbps and the uploading speed is up to 5.76mbps. Wi-Fi is provided too but the real treat comes with tethering options that include Wi-Fi direct and Wi-Fi hot spot.
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1's memory segment provides a 4GB internal memory out of which quite a substantial portion would be allotted to applications that would have to be installed in future. The top of the device has a microSD card slot that can be used to enhance the external memory of the device to as much as 32GB. RAM is 512MB.
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 has a handful of games preinstalled in the device alongside some applications. But the real entertaining games and fruitful applications like WhatsApp and WeChat can only be accessed from the Google play store. Android Jelly Bean 4.2 would make sure that no game and application stay out of reach for the users but the processor and RAM of 512MB may turn out to be a hindrance on certain occasions.
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 gives away a very lengthy talktime and standby time in 2G. The 1300mAh standard lithium-ion battery but the performance just drops down significantly in 3G. The talktime in 2G is upto 6 hours and 48 minutes while in 3G it comes down to 2 hours and 48 minutes. The standby time in 2G is up to 433 hours while in 3G it is up to 325 hours.
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 has a versatile group of connectivity features with USB port, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi hot spot, Wi-Fi direct and GPRS. For 2G network, the smartphone operates at the 2G frequencies of 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz while for 3G the same is 900/2100MHz.
Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 when compared to Micromax A57 Ninja 3 has a similar screen size of 3.5 inches and almost an identical pixel density. Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 has 2 megapixels primary camera which falls short in terms of pixel strength as compared to the 3.15 megapixels primary camera offered by Micromax A57 Ninja 3. Both the devices lack the secondary camera. Micromax A57 Ninja 3 runs on the Android Gingerbread operating system while Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 features the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system. Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 comes with a 1300mAh standard lithium-ion battery while Micromax A57 Ninja 3 features a 1400mAh standard lithium-ion battery.
September, 2013: It’s renovation time for Alcatel as the company looks for a makeover with 4 new Android smartphones. Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 is the lowest version in terms of the scale of the specifications that all the four smartphones offer. All the four smartphones run on the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system but Alcatel One Touch Pop C1 features a 3.5-inch display and a dual-core processor while others come with a quad core processor.
