BlackBerry Curve 8520 - Expert Reviews

Blackberry has been working hard to leave an impression in the Indian mobile industry since a very long time. But the highly priced elegant business phones manufactured by RIM (Research In Motion) do not meet the demands of the buyers entirely. So, with new plans, Blackberry is back yet again. This time with something that is easier on the wallet. With Bold completing the task assigned to it, the weight now lies on the shoulders of Curve. Blackberry Curve is the latest range of phones launched by Blackberry. It is priced pretty decently and with this, Blackberry has moved a step further from its tag of “business oriented” phones. Blackberry Curve 8520  is fitted with music buttons which was definitely a shocker for everyone. The change of game plan was a necessity with sales of Blackberry falling drastically. The manufacturers have been facing the ups and downs for a long time and it was high time to show the world something different. Blackberry, known for its high priced business phones, recently launched Blackberry Curve 8520 that is priced quite decently. Blackberry has been working upon its Bold series to keep the spark alive and now its time for Curve. Blackberry Curve 8520 has been bundled with various Blackberry features and the cost reduction has been effectively. This entry-level smartphone is a proud launch of RIM and is expected to boost the sales of Blackberry.

Operating system and UI

One of the major problems associated with Blackberry is that they hesitate to bring freshness. Blackberry Curve 8520 Gemini runs on the old Blackberry OS 4.6, just like its elder brother Curve 8900. There are no changes made in the operating system and everything looks just the same. The icons and the sub-menus look dull and boring. The whole music keys idea might just be a candy floss for the teenagers because after looking at the “corporate-looking” screen, teenagers might just not be fascinated. The home screen has 6 shortcut icons and the sound profile can also be changed directly from the home screen. The track pad used in the Blackberry Curve 8520 Gemini is excellent and offers fast and zippy response. The track pad is works perfectly well and is very efficient while navigation. The phonebook and messaging looks very basic but has a lot more to offer. The price reduction has mainly affected the screen. Blackberry Curve 8520 Gemini is fitted with a 2.46 inch QVGA screen, which has a resolution of 320 X 420 pixels. This 106 grams phone measures 109 X 60 X 13.9 mm in dimensions. The all-plastic body and battery cover works just fine but does not fit in the Blackberry standards. The four row QWERTY keyboard and the music keys are the best part. The QWERTY keypad is very easy to use and the keys are well spaced. Overall, considering the low cost of the phone, Blackberry Curve 8520 Gemini does fine job here.

Other Features

Blackberry Curve 8520 Gemini is bundles with various multimedia features. The audio quality of the phone is like a typical Blackberry, good but not better than most of the phones. With the inclusion of music keys on top, everyone obviously expected a better multimedia response, but that is not the case. The music player is same as it was previously and not even one change is made in it. The music keys on top have been a welcome addition. Naturally, the music player can be minimized to play in the background and there is no indication of the current song on the home screen. The video player is not disappointing and does a fine job. It comes with DivX and XviD support and MPEG-4 and WMV formats are also supported. The image gallery is acceptable with no changes from before. The image gallery was never too attractive but has no flaws either. Gallery offers thumbnail and list view of images and you can view the photos even in landscape mode.

Blackberry Curve 8520 Gemini comes with a 2-megapixel camera with a camera resolution of 1200 X 1600 pixels. The camera quality is poor. When opting for a huge brand name such as Blackberry, you obviously expect a lot more than this. A 2-megapixel camera that too with such a bad quality is just not fine. The placing of the camera button is not right you have to dig through the menu to find a few available customizable options. With such a camera, what would you expect while recording videos. It records QVGA videos in 3GP format, which is really disappointing.

The track pad makes the browsing experience wonderful. Navigation and zooming is very efficient while using the track pad and the QWERTY keypad enhances the browsing experience. The QVGA resolution doesn’t fit while working on a full screen. It lacks text reflow and zooming takes a second or two.

Blackberry Curve 8520 comes with just 256 MB internal memory, which is definitely not enough to store songs, pictures, videos and much more. Although, Blackberry has provided an option to expand memory using a micro SD card. The external memory can be expanded up to 32 GB.

Other Features

Blackberry Curve 8520 Gemini has five pre-installed games, which is enough for a “Blackberry”. These are Bric Breaker, Word Mole, Soduko, Texas Hold’em King 2 and Klondike Solitaire. Other games and apps can be downloaded from the Blackberry App World, which has a huge collection of games and apps.

Blackberry Curve 8520  is fitted with a standard lithium-ion battery of 1150 mAh. The battery offers a talk time of about 4 hours 30 minutes and a stand by time of about 408 hours. The battery does a fine job even after a long time of its use.

Connectivity offered by isn’t too great either. Lack of 3G is a major blow for the buyers. The phone offers Wi-Fi connectivity but most of the things such as BBM work on Blackberry Internet Plan only. Besides this, it has micro USB port, micro SD card slot and Bluetooth v2.0.

Other Features

With so many shortcomings, Blackberry Curve 8520 is not a handset to recommend. Instead, Nokia E71 and E63 would be a better choice. These two phones have a better build and offer much more than the Blackberry. A better camera, 3G and GPS are some of the additions.

Other Features

August 21, 2009- Today, Blackberry Curve 8520 Gemini made its first appearance in the market. It is the first Blackberry to be equipped with a Track pad. It is an entry-level smartphone introduced by RIM for budget customers.
