BlackBerry Passport Red - Expert Reviews

It has been quite heartbreaking for the hardcore BlackBerry fans to see how the journey of BlackBerry devices panned out in the last 15 years. The smartphone industry has been turned upside down with the arrival of Android, while iOS run Apple devices continue to be the holy grail for most smartphone lovers. In this turmoil, BlackBerry has singularly failed to keep up with the changes and has lost out on a huge chunk of its market share. In fact, BlackBerry has even managed to push away a massive chunk of its hardcore fans, which goes to show the magnitude of fall the company had to suffer.

With all that said, BlackBerry is still alive and believe it or not, there are still many consumers who cling on to these devices. What has made BlackBerry a bit more attractive to consumers in recent times is its acceptance of third party apps for Android and iOS. The company has transitioned into providing touchscreen phones from being a company that was solely dependent on QWERTY keypads and trackpads. In fact with BlackBerry Passport, the company has shown a lot of courage by offering a hybrid combination of QWERTY keypad and touchscreen.

The device does look like a passport in terms of shape, although is much bigger in size than a standard sized passport. The dimensions of the device include a length of 128mm, a width of 90.3mm and a thickness of 9.3mm. The gadget weighs 196 grams and is quite sturdy in its built. The device looks pretty great to be honest, although a bit awkward to get used to due to its wider built. Under the hood, the device packs in a 2.2GHz quad-core processor and 3GB of RAM, which are top notch indeed. The smartphone also has BlackBerry 10.3 operating system with BlackBerry Blend software to provide faster integration of your device with the desktop. The gadget is available in the two colors of Black and White.

Operating system and UI

BlackBerry Passport uses an interesting display design with a 4.5 inches screen having a 3 row QWERTY touchpad at the bottom. The remaining of a standard keyboard can be found on the touchscreen as and when you chose to type, which is certainly a great idea conceptually. The IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen in itself looks sharp and runs on a resolution of 1440 by 1440 pixels and is backed by a massive pixel density of 453ppi. And users can use up to 10 fingers to interact with the display.

Other Features

Sound clarity has always been a issue with BlackBerry devices but with BlackBerry Passport, we would give it a thumbs up. For the device comes with a neatly designed music player interface wherein, users can listen to popular radio stations via FM Radio feature as well. However, watching videos might be a bit tricky on its unconventional display and the QWERTY keypad may stick out more than you would have wanted it to.

This is the most powerful camera device from BlackBerry by any stretch with BlackBerry Passport featuring a 13 megapixels primary rear shutter with features like optical image stabilization and LED flash. The shutter also has HDR while it can shoot videos at 1080p, which is not bad at all. A 2 megapixels secondary camera is also provided at the front to be used for clicking selfies or make video calls over 3G Internet.

Internet is swift on BlackBerry Passport, for the device works with GPRS, EDGE and Wi-Fi to provide an ideal environment for downloading data and surfing popular websites. Wi-Fi hot-spot, Wi-Fi direct and dual band are just some of the tethering elements that the device holds.

BlackBerry Passport is loaded with 32GB of internal memory - a space that should accumulate plenty of data in the form of songs, games, images and videos. In case the user wants to use the external memory, a microSD card slot with a colossal 128GB capacity comes handy.

Other Features

This segment had never been the strongest for BlackBerry in the past and although things do improve with BlackBerry Passport supporting third party apps and games for Android and iOS, it is still not at par with other high end Android gadgets as far as the gaming experience is concerned.

BlackBerry Passport has a non-removable 3450mAh standard lithium-ion battery that does hold the test of time by providing a talk time of up to 18 hours in 2G and up to 23 hours in 3G. The standby time provided by the device is up to 432 hours in 2G and up to 444 hours in 3G. Moreover, continuous songs can be played by the user for up to 84 hours.

Keeping with other flagship models, BlackBerry Passport also provides NFC along with Bluetooth and USB slim port for exchanging data with other devices. The device is rich in terms of Internet connectivity as well by providing faster web browsing and downloading of data.

Other Features

BlackBerry Passport is a flagship phone and it would be natural to compare it with the most popular flagship phone in the market, the iPhone 6. BlackBerry Passport has a 4.5 inches IPS LCD display with a 3 row QWERTY keypad below it, whereas iPhone 6 comes with a 4.7 inches display. iPhone 6 comes with 326ppi of pixel density whereas BlackBerry Passport comes with 453ppi of pixel density. Also, BlackBerry Passport does not have the fingerprint sensor that iPhone 6 has. BlackBerry Passport comes with a 13 megapixels primary camera whereas iPhone 6 features a 8 megapixels iSIght camera. Although, the former has a higher pixel backup, iPhone 6 produces better images. The secondary camera in BlackBerry Passport is of 2 megapixels, while iPhone 6 comes with a 1.2 megapixels secondary camera.

The software platforms are very different for both the devices with BlackBerry Passport running on BlackBerry 10.3 OS as compared to iOS 8 for Apple iPhone 6.

Other Features

29 September, 2014: Blackberry tries to come out of the rut by releasing its latest BlackBerry Passport in India today. The odd square shaped gadget is priced at Rs.49,990 and offers a combination of touchscreen and a QWERTY keypad. BlackBerry has produced the smartphone in limited quantity, which has minimized the risk. The highlights of the device are as follows:

              *         4.5 inches square touchscreen display

              *         3-row QWERTY keyboard

              *         13 megapixels primary camera + 2 megapixels secondary camera

              *         3450mAh standard lithium-ion battery

              *         BlackBerry 10 OS

              *         3GB RAM

              *         32GB internal memory + 128GB microSD card slot

When you hear the word what image pops into your mind? Maybe it's the phone you own or the one you desperately want. Maybe it's even a favorite pocket companion from years past. Whatever it may be, one thing is likely certain: it looks nothing like the BlackBerry Passport.That's because almost no smartphone does. Instead of staying within comfortable dimensions, the Passport is a square. OK, to be geometrically accurate, let's call it square-ish. But being different just cuz is hardly (if ever) Read full Review

A powerful, cumbersome love letter to physical keyboard fans

The BlackBerry Passport is a pure productivity machine, and emblematic of the company's professional, business-focused mindset. It's packing powerful hardware, a slew of clever features, and a great foundation in BlackBerry OS 10.3, which is poised to give iOS and Android a run for their money -- if there are enough apps. The phone will be available unlocked later this week for $599 in the US, and later in 2014 for 649 in France and Germany, $699 in Canada, and 529 in the UK. In Australia, Optus Read full Review

I typed my entire BlackBerry Passport review on the phone's tiny keyboard

Apparently I'm a masochist.That's an odd way to begin a review. But to give BlackBerry's latest handset, the Passport, as thorough a review as possible, I decided to type the entire thing from the phone itself. My twisted idea came from a realization that this (mostly) square oddity is the first phone with a physical keyboard that I've used since the Motorola Droid 4 in 2012 or the BlackBerry Q10 in 2013. It's not even a normal keyboard by modern smartphone standards -- it's a flattened, hybrid Read full Review

Tweet Share Share on Facebook Tweet Share Pin Share BlackBerry is still around?Ive heard that question quite often the past few weeks, as Ive been using the BlackBerry Passport. Contrary to what many people in my social circle believe, BlackBerry is indeed still around and is ready to make itself relevant once again.For years, BlackBerry tried to fight the iPhone, but that was a battle it brutally lost. Now it's leaving that fight behind and going back to its roots: making tools for getting work Read full Review
