Celkon Campus A60 - Expert Reviews
The gap between the tier 2 and premium brands is starting to mend when one thinks about the design and presentation of gadgets with a few exceptions. Designing of flagship devices from the tier2 brands have started to get enhanced with all the brands running more or less on the same pedestal when it comes to the software platform, with most smartphones using Android. So there is less to catch up for the tier2 brands and if exploited in the right manner, opportunities can be turned into real success. Consider Celkon Campus A60 that comes with sharp edges, an elegant outer appearance with glossy screen and chic design. But one should never judge a book by its cover and there are some hardware flaws or rather inabilities that the smartphone possesses. The device has a 4.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen that works at a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels.
Since the device has the dual SIM facility, the user can make use of two tariff plans with ease. An internal memory of 512MB is a decent number that can store a few songs and videos but beyond that, the user would find it difficult to accumulate a large collection of data. If the user is willing spend a few extra bucks on memory expansion, the external memory can be stretched up to 32GB. The processor clocks at 1GHz but the RAM is disappointingly low with just 256MB so the speed is compromised at various points especially while multitasking. The operating system used is formidable though with Android Jelly Bean 4.2 so the user would be getting his or her hands at all the latest games and applications. But in hindsight, the lack of a competitive RAM and relatively weaker processor would compromise the performance of certain games that require high end configuration.
The internet is passable as far as speed is concerned with minor hiccups here and there. GPRS, EDGE, and Wi-Fi can be exploited to do the same. The camera is of 3.2-megapixel for primary shutter while the same is VGA for the secondary shutter. There is no LED flash, which is a bummer, but there is the camera zoom option that would help in focusing on distant objects. Audi player, video player, and FM radio look after the entertainment side of the device providing access to songs and videos. The smartphone can operate for a good amount of time with a standard lithium-ion battery of 1400mAh, although heavy usage that involves multitasking may consumer power faster than what is ideal. Other features that are pre-installed in the device include Phone Book, SMS Memory, Alarm clock, World clock, Stopwatch, Calculator.
Operating system and UI
A 4.5-inch display is always a good size to have for users who do not want a massive screen sized device but at the same time, want to watch videos and movies on a decent screen size. The screen is backed by TFT capacitive touchscreen technology along with a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels. Swiping is fine but some games do tend to hang up at times.
Celkon Campus A60 has a music player for picking and creating a customized list of songs that support the formats of MP3, MID, AMR, WAV, and AAC. Videos can be played in the formats of MP4 and 3GP. The FM radio not only plays songs through popular radio stations but can record songs too. Sound quality is all right with the music player but loudspeakers are just not loud enough.
Celkon Campus A60 features a 3.2-megapixel primary camera that is maneuverable at a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels and has the digital zoom aid to close-in on objects that are at a farther location. Secondary camera is of 0.3-megapixel that can be used for video calls and web chats at a resolution of 640 by 320 pixels.
Celkon Campus A60 uses the services of Wi-Fi and GPRS along with WAP browser to explore the online world of popular websites like Facebook and YouTube apart from downloading various kinds of data including songs, games, images, and videos. Speed is okay though there are phases wherein the device operates at a very slow pace, which may be frustrating at times.
512MB of internal memory can work for a user who is not keen on keeping a big data collection. But this is not true for most Android devices and so a microSD card is bound to come into play with Celkon Campus A60 that can augment the external memory up to 32GB thereby allowing loads of data to be stored. RAM is of 256MB, which is meek and certainly not enhance the ability of the smartphone.
Celkon Campus A60 runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2 OS, so plenty of options are there for the user to choose from when it comes to playing games and installing applications including Temple Run, Viber, and WhatsApp.
Celkon Campus A60 has a 1450mAh standard lithium-ion battery that drives the smartphone. The talk time received is a little low while standby time is only marginally better.
Celkon Campus A60 has lots of data connectivity features to bank on including Bluetooth and USB port that enable data transferring and receiving info from/sending info to other compatible gadgets. The former of the two facilitates wireless exchange and the latter via USB cable. Wi-Fi is there for wireless internet access through connections available nearby.
Celkon Campus A60 when compared to Karbonn A15 has a bigger screen with 4.5 inches for the former and 4 inches for the latter. Internal memory is more with Karbonn A15 while the same is 512MB for Celkon Campus A60. The RAM is also more with Karbonn A15 with 512MB as compared to 256MB for Celkon Campus A60. The primary camera is of similar strength with 3.2-megapixel for both the smartphones but there is no secondary camera in Karbonn A15 while Celkon Campus A60 has a VGA secondary camera.
August 2013: Celkon Campus A60 is the latest smartphone from Celkon that suggests to be targeted at the college going youth. The device is an economical Android smartphone that would be going up against gadgets like Karbonn A15 that falls in more or less the same category as Celkon Campus A60. The smartphone has a 4.5-inch display and runs on the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 platform.
