Celkon Monalisa ML5 Black - Expert Reviews
Celkon has taken quite a while to find its feet in the smartphone market though it is still in the process of making an impact. Things have not gotten easier for it with the number of players only increasing in the market thus toughening the competition. Micromax and Karbonn have established a firm grip in the market as of now, when it comes to the economical smartphone market. But they do not have complete domination over the same and if a company plays its cards right, there is no reason why the tide would not turn. For now, we have the Celkon Monalisa ML5, which is a mid carter smartphone that has a 4.5-inch qHD display working at a reasonable resolution of 540 by 960 pixels. The pixel density is not that rich as we would see in a tier1 device like Samsung or HTC but the display quality is not that bad either with decent images even outdoors.
Android is the obvious choice for the software platform with Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 to be specific while the hardware complements the same with utmost gusto by providing a quad core processor clocking at 1.2GHz. A powerful processor is always good to have by your side but a substantial amount of RAM is also required to facilitate faster allocation of resources and with 1GB, Celkon Monalisa ML5 should do that just fine. There are a lot of preloaded applications in the smartphone and more can be downloaded from Google Play Store provided the internet remains in active state. Web services are accessible via GPRS Class 12, EDGE class 12 along with HTML browser. Wi-Fi facility is added but without any tethering features. Lots of data can be downloaded from the web including songs, games, images, and videos but a substantial amount of space would be required to maintain the same on a bigger scale.
Internal memory is not that bad with up to 4GB on paper but the distribution of the same can be a little inconvenient. The memory that the user can use is of 4GB out of which, 1.71GB is provided for application installation. The remaining 1GB is given away for storing information such as phonebook memory, SMS and MMS's. So, there is every possibility that the built-in space would run out and in that case, a 32GB microSD card is going to be more than adequate if used to full capacity. When it comes to the camera department, an 8 megapixels primary shutter should suffice for most photography lovers while the same can be said for the secondary camera as well that is boosted by 2 megapixels strength. LED flash, digital zoom, and auto focus are important elements to have when a photographer wants to get things right in terms of background light and accuracy of the images clicked.
The smartphone supports GSM and CDMA SIMs as it features dual SIM technology thus allowing the user to keep up with two tariff plans. A standard lithium-ion battery of 2000mAh is the power backup that can carve out a lengthy standby time but the talk time suffers quite a bit. Multimedia usage time is good but the same cannot be said about internet surfing.
Operating system and UI
Celkon Monalisa ML5 works with a 4.5-inch TFT capacitive display that has a resolution of 540 by 960 pixels with a passable pixel density. Swiping speed is fast but the display does create some discomfort because of reflections at certain angles while viewing movies and videos.
Celkon Monalisa ML5 rides on the services of music and video player for delivering access to the latest desired songs and videos that the entertainment world has to offer. FM radio can be used for listening to the current popular radio stations accessible in the relevant cities. Various formats supported by the music player include MP3, AAC, MID, AMR, and WAV. Video formats supported by the player include 3GP and MP4.
Celkon Monalisa ML5 has a beefy primary and secondary camera. There are a lot of pixels to work with as the rear camera gets 8 megapixels strength and the front shutter gets a strength of 2 megapixels. Resolution at which the images can be snapped using the primary shutter is 8 megapixels while for the secondary camera, it is 1600 by 1200 pixels. Digital zoom, LED flash, and auto focus are few of the many features that bolster the primary camera.
Celkon Monalisa ML5 is supported by GPRS class 12 and EDGE class 12 features for exploring websites like Facebook or YouTube. Downloading is quick for medium or small sized data but the speed undergoes a bit of a downfall with large sized data like movies. Wi-Fi is provided for wireless access to web but there are no tethering luxuries.
4GB of internal memory is given by Celkon Monalisa ML5, which is segmented depending upon the use of the smartphone wherein, 1.71GB is kept for applications and 1GB for phonebook memories. The remaining storage can be used for keeping data related to songs, games, images, and videos. For pumping up the external memory, a 32GB microSD card slot is provided at the top of the smartphone. The 1GB RAM is always helpful in making the device brisk.
Celkon Monalisa ML5 does not shy away from providing applications for the smartphone that are preloaded but games are limited. But Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 does not disappointment when it comes to opening doors to games and applications available online including WhatsApp and Temple Run.
Celkon Monalisa ML5 is powered by the standard lithium-ion battery of 2000mAh that appears pretty good but delivers a weak talk time. Standby time and multimedia usage time are better.
Celkon Monalisa ML5 provides a variety of data connectivity options like USB port, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS, and EDGE. The smartphone works in tune with 2G and 3G technology with both GSM and CDMA SIMs. The frequency at which the smartphone works is 900 and 1800MHz for 2G and with 2100MHz for 3G.
Celkon Monalisa ML5 when compared to Nokia Lumia 820 has a bigger display with 4.5 inches for the former and 4.3 inches for the latter. The former has a TFT capacitive touchscreen while the latter has an AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. Both the smartphones have 1GB of RAM but the internal memory offered by Nokia Lumia 820 is double that of Celkon Monalisa ML5 with 8GB for the former and 4GB for the latter. The microSD card slot of Celkon Monalisa ML5 has a 32GB capacity while for Nokia Lumia 820, it is of 64GB potential.
The battery strength of Celkon Monalisa ML5 is 2000mAh, which is higher than the 1650mAh standard lithium-ion battery of Nokia Lumia 820. But the talk time and standby time offered by Nokia Lumia 820 are leaps and bounds ahead of the ones offered by Celkon Monalisa ML5. The primary camera of both the smartphones are of 8 megapixels but Nokia Lumia 820 delivers much clearer results. Secondary camera of Celkon Monalisa ML5 is 2 megapixels stronger than the VGA secondary camera of Nokia Lumia 820. Celkon Monalisa ML5 supports internet tethering as well including facilities like dual band and Wi-Fi hot spot but the same is absent in case of Celkon Monalisa ML5. Celkon Monalisa ML5 runs on the Android Jelly Bean operating system while Nokia Lumia 820 runs on the Microsoft Windows 8 software platform.
September 2013: Celkon Monalisa ML5 is certainly a catchy name to have for a smartphone but would Celkon be able to grab eye balls solely based on the title of the gadget is something that is going to be very tough. But having said that, Celkon Monalisa ML5 certainly does not disappoint in terms of specs with a healthy 4.5-inch display and a powerful 1.2GHz quad core processor. The Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 OS running this device looks good in terms of other specs as well. But there are other gadgets with similar or even more fire power from the likes of Karbonn, Micromax, and Asus so the task is cut out for Celkon. The highlights are as follows:
*4.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen
*Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 operating system
*1.2GHz quad core processor
*8 megapixels primary camera + 2 megapixels secondary camera
