Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 - Expert Reviews

It is almost as if before one blinks an eye, we get a smartphone lined up for us. This season, apart from many other reasons has been a difficult one to keep track of all the smartphones, phablets and tablets lined up in the technology world. Among all the high profile and tier2 brands, one firm had hogged the limelight in its earlier stages but later on lost it due to well, poor performance. Datawind is a UK brand that once had the attention of the world riveted on its most economical tablet by the name of Aakash that did not go down well with the critics, though the overall sales figure may beg to differ. No matter what the results were, the attempt was certainly brave from the company and had actually paved the way for many other brands to try and produce economical gadgets to cater to the low and mid level segments of the populace.

Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 is a smartphone from Datawind that features a 5 inches TFT capacitive WVGA screen backed by a decent pixel density and moderate resolution. The display looks great and accommodating but before we move any further, we should take a look at the dimensions of the gadget, which is basically rectangular in shape with sharp edges. Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 is run by a dual core processor that operates at a frequency of 1.2GHz. The Cortex A7 processor complements the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system well and delivers great results in terms of access to games and applications through the Google play store. The gadget has a length of 140.9mm, breadth of 72.9mm and thickness of 9.5mm. There is a microUSB port for connecting the gadget with laptop and computer to exchange data or charge the gadget. Bluetooth also delivers the means to exchange data with other gadgets but unlike USB port, it works wirelessly.

GPRS and EDGE provide speedy Internet that is further boosted by the presence of Wi-Fi and HTML5 browser. Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 is compatible with 3G technology and supports both GSM and WCDMA SIMs. For the WCDMA SIM, the device operates at the frequencies of 850 and 2100MHz. For GSM SIM, the device works on frequencies of 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz. The camera department looks just about adequate when it comes to the pixel strength and flaunts a VGA secondary camera and a 5 megapixels primary camera. Lots of data can be captured and stored by the device with the combination of 4GB internal memory and 32GB microSD card slot. The nature of data stored may include songs, games, images and videos. The battery strength is really poor by any stretch of imagination which although, gives a moderate amount of talk time of up to 4 hours but the standby time amounts to an awful 48 hours, which is simply not going to be enough even for the normal usage of the gadget. FM radio, music and video player look after the entertainment aspect of Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5, while the dual SIM facility adds the utility factor to the smartphone.

Operating system and UI

Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 features a 5 inches WVGA TFT capacitive display with a resolution of 800 by 480 pixels. One finds some rusty moments on engaging with the display while swiping but overall, the gadget is easy to use and offers a good amount of clarity.

Other Features

Music player and FM radio are the two sources of music wherein, the former allows the user to collect and store his/her desired set of songs, the latter plays the content on radio stations. The video player can be used to watch movies on the large 5 inches display in various formats.

The 5 megapixels primary camera of Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 performs well to its ability although we would have expected more in low light background. The user can click images at a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels. The secondary camera is of a mediocre 0.3 megapixels strength and is used mainly for video calls and snapping images.

GPRS, EDGE and HTML5 browser can be used to download data or visit websites of desired nature. Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 also has the Wi-Fi that keeps the speed of the web going for wireless connection with authenticated server.

4GB of internal memory is what most smartphones offer and Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 is no different. In case, data like songs, games, images and videos are stored on a huge scale then, the need of the 32GB microSD card slot will arise. The move to add external memory can stretch the limited memory of the gadget by a long margin.

Other Features

Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 supports some of the better games and applications that the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 offers including Temple Run, Angry Birds, Commando and Fruit Ninja.

The battery department is the most disappointing aspect of Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 by a long margin, with a talk time of up to 4 hours and an absolute abysmal standby time of up to 48 hours.

On snooping around the connectivity features of Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5, one finds that it comes up with all the basic requirements of data exchange that include USB port and Bluetooth, whereas the Internet aspect remains covered too via Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE and HTML5 browser. The 3G WCDMA SIM of the device works on frequencies of 850 and 2100MHz and the GSM SIM supports frequencies of 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz.

Other Features

Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 when compared to Karbonn S5 Titanium has an identical screen size of 5 inches but the display quality is much better with the latter. Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 has the WVGA display, which is inferior as compared to the IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen of the Karbonn gadget. Both smartphones are dual SIM in nature but there is a gigantic difference in the battery strength and ultimately the performance delivered by both the devices. The talk time delivered by Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 is up to 4 hours, which is short of the 13 hours talk time of Karbonn Titanium S5. The standby time of 48 hours from Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 is grossly short of the 200 hours standby time of Karbonn Titanium S5.

Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 runs on the 1.2GHz dual core processor whereas Karbonn Titanium S5 runs on the 1.2GHz quad core processor. Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 has the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system, which is just a sub version ahead of the Android Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system offered by Karbonn Titanium S5. Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5 comes with a 5 megapixels primary camera and a VGA secondary camera. Karbonn Titanium S5 on the other hand, boasts of an 8 megapixels primary camera and a 2 megapixels secondary thus exceeding the abilities of Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5.

Other Features

December 16, 2013: The innovator of the popular Aakash tablet – the UK based Datawind is back with its new set of smartphones. The company has introduced three new models for the market by the names of PocketSurfer 5X, PocketSurfer 5 and PocketSurfer 3G5. The PocketSurfer 5X is different from the rest as it is based on Linux operating system as compared to the Datawind PocketSurfer 3G5, which has Android Jelly Bean 4.2 as its software platform. The smartphone priced at Rs. 6,499 is compatible with 3G technology and sports dual SIM too. The highlights of the device are as follows:

*        Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system

*        Dual SIM
