HTC Desire 520 Steel Grey - Expert Reviews
HTC has many models under the Rs. 10,000 mark and the smartphone it brings to the table in this price segment is called HTC Desire 520. This budget smartphone comes with several decent features that allow it to standout in midst of fierce competition in its price category. This simple looking device is a successor to HTC Desire 510 and gets a few up gradations like flash and support to 4G LTE network.
Other than these two upgrades, it is similar to the earlier model. There is no official news about its price point or availability in the Indian market, but considering the specs we believe it to be priced below Rs.10,000. The main competitors of this mobile phone are Micromax Canvas Fire 3, Redmi 2, Canvas Juice 3 and Redmi 2 prime among others.
This member of the HTC Desire series is shaped like a bar, and its plastic body with rounded edges give it an up market look. However, the usage of cheap quality body material is a bit disappointing. It also feels a tad lighter and does not give the feel of durability. The dimensions of this smartphone are 139.8mm x 68.9mm x 9.05mm. If you look at its front side, you will find the company has left out a lot of space, both above and below the 4.5 inches screen. The screen itself is surrounded by a thick black coloured bezel wherein, at the top left hand the name of HTC is embossed in silver. On the other hand, the big chin features the microphone.
At the upper part on the rear side, you will find the primary camera and LED flash positioned at the centre and name of the company written on the middle of the panel. The design of this phone features volume up/down and power buttons placed on the right edge, charging port at the bottom and a 3.5mm audio jack at the top edge. The three capacitive buttons that control home, back and multi function features are placed on the screen itself. This handset is available in black colour only.
HTC Desire 520 is bestowed with a 4.5 inches FWVGA capacitive touchscreen that can render pictures in 480 x 854 pixels resolution, and garners a pixel density of 218ppi. Unfortunately, there is no information as to whether this display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass layer to safeguard it from scratches. Its touch sensitivity is very high and the viewing angles are very good. However, due to lesser pixel density it is unreadable under direct sunlight.
HTC Desire 520 is a good multimedia device and HTC has provided it with two snappers for the photography segment. An 8MP shooter with LED flash fills the place of primary snapper and the secondary camera’s place is filled by a 2MP shooter. The 8MP primary shooter of this handset along with flash can take still photos and videos in resolutions of 3264 x 2448 pixels and full HD, respectively. The presence of LED flash allows it to take good quality pictures even in low light conditions.
As mentioned earlier, the front facing secondary camera comes with a 2MP sensor and is good enough to take quality selfies or make video calls. There is, however, no flash accompanying the secondary camera.
This budget smartphone is provided with a 1.1GHz quad-core Cortex A-7 Qualcomm MSM8909 Snapdragon 210 processor, which along with an Adreno 304 GPU runs it without any performance lag.
Operating system and UI
HTC Desire 520 runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop OS with Sense 7 UI layered at the top. The Sense UI is well polished and comes with several animations, which will make your time with this handset quite enjoyable. The Sense UI comes with several innovative features too, such as putting similar kind of apps in one folder like Google apps, Music folder, Tools and more. This organized way comes in handy for users to quickly access their desired app(s).
Other features like the dialler or keypad are stock Android affair and there is no tweaking around with these. HTC has unfortunately put in some bloat ware with the UI, making the performance of the phone slower as you add more and more apps.
HTC Desire 520 is a single SIM smartphone that comes with several connectivity options like 2G (850/900/1800/1900MHz), 3G (850/1900MHz), 4G (FDD Bands: 2, 4, 5, 17), Bluetooth 4.1 with A2DP, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz), AGPS, GLONASS and Micro USB 2.0.
The handset features Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Proximity sensors to help provide a better user experience.
Again, this handset is provided with 1GB of DDR3 RAM and 8GB of ROM. Besides, the user can add up to a humungous 200GB of external memory through a microSD card.
This smartphone comes with a non removable 2000mAh Li-ion battery that delivers enough power to run it throughout the day on a single charge with moderate usage.
There are several other features worth mentioning such as:
