HTC Explorer, the Android Gingerbread mobile that was announced in September 2011, is one of the most affordable smartphones in the market and a remarkable smartphone in the global portfolio of HTC devices. Smartphones allow users to enjoy well defined graphics, exciting animations, quality music and videos along with social networking pleasure. HTC Explorer proposes a complex and exciting smartphone experience for users who are experiencing a smartphone for the first time.

HTC Explorer is a real smartphone as it gives shortcut to save valuable time and make life less complicated.  An interesting feature of HTC Explorer is that when the phone rings, you can see the latest social status updates, any special occasion (Birthday/ Anniversary) on the screen of the person calling. Never let you miss special dates and updates. With the HTC Explorer, the user can decide and personalize the home screen panes with various widgets, shortcuts and icons of those applications that they use frequently. HTC Explorer is simply a smarter phone for everyone and it represents another clear demonstration of HTC's commitment to expanding the market for more advanced smartphones.

HTC Sensation is an Android version 2.3 entry level smartphone with a modest 600MHz Qualcomm processor that allows applications to start up instantly and switching between them is also made easier.  HTC has come up with bright idea of few colors that can be customized, the colors are Metallic Blue, Metallic Orange, Metallic White and Metallic Purple. This droid is available in three shades, Metallic Black, Active Black and Metallic Navi. For those who are color specific and want to showoff with something that won't be common, you have a choice.

Operating system and UI

With a decent sized 3.2 inch capacitive touch screen and a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, the user get a crystal clear view of applications. The lock screen allows access of contacts, mail, camera, and messages in one swipe even when your phone is locked. With HTC Explorer we can put what’s most important at ease of fingertips. And to make things more convenient, HTC Explorer offers an intelligent and clean home screen design that focus on the most often used applications and features. It notifies user for any new email or text message or for any calendar event that has been marked.

HTC Explorer allows the user to go through contacts quickly and make calls easily from either the contacts or call history by simply entering the contact’s first or last name, or may be just the initials. It shows priority list of recent calls. This droid runs on Android version 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and has HTC Sense user interface of version 3.5 on top of it that makes the home screen very customizable. It is powered by a single core Cortex A5 processor that throbs at the speed of 600MHz and has Qualcomm MSM7225A Snapdragon chipset for its better functioning. The Adreno 200 GPU also gives good graphical performance.

HTC Explorer is a good multimedia phone in a small package. It offers the users entertainment like never before. It allows web browsing at ease similar to desktop computer. To make viewing better, the HTC Explorer automatically adjusts the text on the screen so user dont have to scroll left and right to read the text completely. Websites can be found easily and are very much readable. And to search for any address, a map opens up immediately and the location can be traced. It allows zoom in and dial a phone number on the web page in one easy step, which gives convenient handling experience. The audio player supports .aac, .amr, .ogg, .m4a, .mid, .mp3, .wav, and .wma (Windows Media Audio 9) formats for playback whereas for recording the format supported is .amr. On the other hand, the video player gives back up to .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv (Windows Media Video 9), .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3), and .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3) formats for video playback while for recording it supports .mp4 format.


HTC Explorer sports a 3.2 megapixels primary color camera with an image resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels but it cannot exactly be compared with an 8 megapixels auto focus cameras of many smartphones but it is good enough for a modest picture and video quality. The shutter button is also very quick. It will never let a great shot slip away. The instant capture camera button works as soon as the button is pressed.


HTC Explorer offer rich Internet experience. It supports 3G with up to 14.4Mbps download speed and up to 5.76Mbps upload speed. It also support EDGE at 236.8 kbps speed. Navigation through GPRS can be done up to 80kbps speed. Active lock screen in window allows good stuff on your phone, user can check up on your portfolio, view your friend's status, and more. User can surf the web in style with multiple window browsing, a quick look up tool for jumping to Wikipedia or YouTube and the latest Flash support for smooth video playback. On the Help page, a wide range of tutorial videos and articles, troubleshooting, downloads, and contact information can be found for support centers.


Total storage capacity offered by HTC Explorer is 512MB for RAM and 512MB space for ROM along with 90MB user available memory, which is not very high but good enough for normal applicability, like storing phone book entries, call records, SIS applications and messages. You can extend the external memory of the droid up to 32GB using a microSD card in the provided memory card slot.

HTC Explorer do not have lot of fancy inbuilt games but with Google's Android software many applications and can be downloaded from the Android market. User can download as many applications as they want. Most of the applications and games from Android market can be downloaded in matter of moments.


With the rechargeable Lithium Ion battery with 1,230 mAh capacity, HTC Explorer offers a considerable stand-by time up to 485 hours for 2G network and up to 445 hours for 3G network. The talk time offered with this powerful battery is up to 7 hours 40 minutes with 2G network and up to 7 hours 33 minutes for 3G network.


HTC Explorer offers a good connectivity and work well on both 2G and 3G networks. It supports 3G network bands at HSDPA 900 / 2100 MHz frequencies and 2G network GSM bands at 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz frequencies. The HTC Explorer allows Bluetooth version 3.0 connection with A2DP for wireless stereo headsets, EDR and GPRS for up to 114kbps and EDGE up to 560kbps of speed. It also support the 3G HSDPA downloading maximum speed of 14.4 Mbps, and HSUPA uploading speed of 5.76 Mbps.

Motorola Fire XT is one of the touchscreen smartphone in the market which is a strong competitor to HTC Explorer launched in similar price range. Both the devices run on Android OS. So made an attempt to compare the difference between both the gadgets based on the specifications. The features of MOTO are also good. Camera features like LED flash and secondary camera are not available in Motorola Fire XT which are there in Motorola Fire XT along with more internal storage. HTC Explorer has a slightly bigger and brighter screen whereas Motorola Fire XT comes with higher 800 Mhz processor. HTC Explorer is a low end Android smartphone by the Taiwanese smartphones and tablets manufacturer, HTC. It being a low end device, the HTC Watch movie rental service and the 3D scrolling effects on the home screen panes are not available. The device bears so much resemblance from HTC Wildfire S and its outer shell is made up of patterned plastic for good grip and this plastic has a rubbery feel. This droid was announced in the month of September, 2011 and was made available in the market from the last week of the same month, that is, September, 2012 at a price of 12,650 only. At the time of launch, HTC Explorer was the entry level droid of HTC to pace up with the existing competition, the company slashed down the price of this smartphone and now it is available for Rs. 7,899 only, which is a very notable price cut.

HTC Explorer holds a 3.2 inch TFT capacitive touch screen that is supported by 256 thousand colors and 180 pixels per inch of density. The handset runs on Android version 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and has HTC Sense version 3.5 user interface on top of it. It is powered by a little slow Cortex A5 processor that beats at the rate of 600MHz only and has Snapdragon chipset also that improves the speed of the droid. The external memory is extensible up to 32GB and there is a 3.2 megapixels primary camera that is also capable of recording 480 pixels videos. Video calls are barred as there is no secondary camera provided in the gadget. With the powerful Lithium Ion 1,230 mAh battery this smartphone provides a good talk and standby time.
