HTC One E8 Grey - Expert Reviews

Introduction

HTC One E8 has finally arrived in India after lots of speculations and rumors. The company calls this handset a fashionable variant of HTC One M8. Yes, indeed, it looks quite similar to the flagship model of HTC, but this one comes in a different polycarbonate and plastic body. The smartphone is available in two color options namely, an attractive matte black and the other in a glossy white finish. Market analysts have found a stark similarity in this black variant and that of the One X version of HTC, released some years back. One of the best aspects found in this mobile is the perfect curvature that makes it perfect to hold in hand. However, the white variant is not so attractive and we found it to be a bit more slippery to be held in hand and it appeared that the one with matte finish was a better alternative.

We found out that HTC One E8 also comes with a quad-core processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset) clocked at a speed of 2.5GHz, sporting internal memory of 16GB and RAM of 2GB. While using the phone, we found its user experience to be extremely smooth and happening. This handset runs on the latest Android KitKat 4.4.2 OS and comes with Sense 6 UI of HTC. This perfect combination makes the mobile smooth to use and a standout seamless performance. In the camera section, the primary rear one has a 13MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. This is definitely an improvement over the Ultra Pixel sensor of M8. The device also comes with a front facing secondary camera having a sensor of 5MP. One of the most important aspects of this smartphone is its dual-SIM capability, which makes it that more worthy. It comes with a 2600mAh battery that helps it to run for longer hours. Other features found in HTC One E8 are: BoomSound audio, motion launch controls, built-in selfie tools, Blinkfeed streaming, and dual curve design.

The first thing that you will notice in E8 is its new shape of dual curve design with unique features such as lightweight unibody frame, edge-to-edge display and tapered sides. It is designed to impress and built to perform. You can use easy shortcuts and also use the phone intuitively with the help of Motion Launch gesture controls. Some of the best selfie technologies are used in the front faced camera which enables the user to take some of the best shots that you can share with the world. With a built-in touch up software, the device optimizes facial details and also enhances the skin tone so that, you look great in the selfies. You can also strike the right pose every time as the camera comes with display-side countdown timer. Also, the presence of motion launch shortcut control makes the smartphone use that more lucid. It helps users in various ways wherein, you can now easily launch the camera by just holding the smartphone in landscape, followed by pressing of the volume rocker. Users can now just need to raise the mobile to their ears to answer incoming calls. To wake up the smartphone, you simply need to swipe up or double tap the device. Users can make quick voice call by simply swiping down.

Operating system and UI

HTC’s 6 UI is used in HTC One E8. Along with Android KitKat 4.4.2 OS, the users will feel the difference in smooth navigation with other similar devices. We didn’t find any glitch while checking the device. The IPS LCD touchscreen display size is of 5 inches with resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Moreover, 441ppi of pixel density makes the picture on screen - vivid and life like. One of the best aspects of this device is the fact that its build quality has not been compromised by the company engineers, for the viewing angles are excellent and particularly true in case of sunlight legibility. Also, users get great colour reproduction and should you want to check out pictures at portrait or landscape mode, you will get the best performance on screen.

The presence of the latest operating system, powerful CPU and impressive UI will increase the user experience of this smartphone exponentially. For protecting the top of the display screen, HTC One E8 has been protected with the help of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 technology. It needs special mention that Sense 6.0 UI is one of the best interfaces available in the market. Moreover, different apps and games can be played and used seamlessly. In fact, accessing apps such as Blinkfeed can be done easily with a couple of taps on the display screen.

Other Features

In the multimedia section, users will find stereo speakers as well as earpiece. Most interestingly, YouTube player also forms a part of HTC One E8's entertainment segment. Some of the important audio as well as video file formats that can be played at E8 are MP4, MP3, and WAV. Music player is available and users can filter it on the basis of features such as background playback, album art cover, Playlists, Artist and Album.

Camera

HTC One M8 comes with a 13 megapixels primary camera at its rear end. One of the greatest improvements over M8 is the fact that it does away with the 4 Ultrapixel  sensor. Videos can be recorded with the primary camera at a resolution of 1080 pixels. If you tweak the settings, you can easily take excellent shots with this. Besides the 13 megapixels primary rear camera, users will also find a front faced secondary camera of 5 megapixels sensor. This is one of the best aspects of this mobile, for users will get a 5MP camera when its peers come with just a 2MP sensor. Video recording can be done here at 1080 pixels. Users will be fascinated to click the best selfies with the help of this device.

Connectivity

High speed internet connectivity is available on HTC One E8. Users will not only get 3G HSPA+ but also Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n facility for internet access.

Memory

The storage and memory capacity is quite impressive. Though the internal storage capacity is of 16GB, users will only get up to 12.5GB for storage as the reamining space gets used up by system applications. If you want to store more information, pictures, videos etc., you can do that with the available external microSD card slot. The maximum external expandable storage capacity is of 128GB. So, no matter how much you want to save in your mobile, there is no dearth of space here. HTC One E8 comes with 2GB of RAM, which gives ample scope to the user to run multiple apps on one hand and multitask on the other.

Other Features

HTC One E8 comes with one of the best processors that is generally found in the best of Android smartphones - a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor that clocks at a speed of 2.5GHz. Most importantly, the Adreno 330 graphics unit here is paired with the most powerful processor. The best thing perhaps is the presence of 2GB of RAM, which helps in the smooth and seamless usage of the phone. Therefore, a user having affinity for playing games can also play his or her favourite graphic rich games like Temple Run 3, Contra, Asphalt, Subway Surfers etc. Also, Android based apps are available in this smartphone with one of the most important ones being the Blinkfeed streaming apart from WhatsApp, Viber and Line.

Battery

Users will be delighted to find that HTC One E8 comes with a battery of 2600mAh capacity. The company claims that on 3G network, the talk time available is of 26 hours. And on standby mode, this HTC device lasts for 504 hours.

Connectivity

A wide array of connectivity options are available in this smartphone from HTC. In the internet connectivity options, you will get Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n as well as 3G HSPA+. Many may have loved to have 4G LTE access but the users will not get it here. It may be a let down for you too. Other data connectivity options available at HTC One E8 are dual SIM connectivity, NFC, v4.0 Bluetooth with aptX codec, and GPS with GLONASS.

Other Features

HTC has recently unveiled a similar device to M8 but at a much lower price. It is named HTC One E8, sounding very similar to the flagship model, HTC One M8. Let’s compare these two devices from the company to understand whether you gain or lose by buying M8 vis-a-vis E8. The first difference you get to see lies in the design. While M8 is mostly created from metal unibody chassis, E8 is built from polycarbonate shell but with a dual curve design. Though the former looks significantly better, the latter is that more comfortable to hold in hand, no matter which side you are holding – vertical or horizontal. Both come in several colour options, thus giving you more than one choice to choose from. While both have similar lengths (146mm) and widths (70.7mm), HTC One E8 is a bit thicker than the flagship device (9.85mm over 9.35mm).

As E8 comes in a plastic body, its weight is lesser than the M8 model (146g over 160g). One of the similarities between their designs includes BoomSound stereo speakers along with built-in amps that are front faced. Both these devices have Super LCD 3 display screens having 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution and 441ppi of pixel density. One of the most important aspects here is that the company has not cut any corners for bringing down the price. While HTC One M8 comes in two versions – one with 32GB internal storage and another with 16GB one, E8 comes with just the 16GB version. However, when it comes to the expansion of storage space, users will be able to do it by up to 128GB with the help of microSDXC slots.

When it comes to the internet connectivity, M8 users only have an additional 4G LTE. Other connectivity options in the devices are more or less similar. Both have 5MP front faced cameras. While a 4.1MP Ultrapixel camera is there at the rear end of M8, a 13 megapixels camera is there with E8. If you want to have taste of HTC One M8 at a much affordable price, HTC One E8 is the solution for you.

Other Features

July 14, 2014: HTC has launched two new devices - one named HTC One E8, the other named HTC Desire 616. While the former is priced at Rs. 34,990 the latter costs Rs. 17,200. The company along with the market experts claim that E8 is the less costlier version of M8. The E8 model features a 5 inches LCD 3 full-HD display screen having a screen resolution of 1080 × 1920 pixels. This handset is packed with the latest software of Android 4.4.2 Kitkat OS and HTC Sense User Interface.

The other important hardware and software features include Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at a speed of 2.5GHz, Adreno 330 GPU and RAM of 2GB. The internal storage capacity of HTC One E8 is of 16GB and the external expandable storage capacity is of 128GB through a microSD card. Multiple connectivity options are available here including dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, 3G, GLONASS, GPS with A-GPS and Bluetooth v4.0.
