Karbonn Opium N7 - Expert Reviews

A couple of years back, Karbonn showed a lot of promise as a firm with the potential to rise from a tier 2 mass production smartphone company to one of the potential top runners in the country. However, the Indian smartphone manufacturing firm has not been able to deliver consistent results in terms of sales and has lagged behind the likes of Micromax, Lava, Xolo and Lenovo. The Titanium series has continued to rake in a major portion of its income keeping aside the entry level devices that has kept it in the running but the company would be looking to boost its sales this season. Karbonn Opium N7 happens to be another mid scale budget smartphone that features a 4 inches WVGA IPS touchscreen display with support for 3G technology. The device is dual SIM in nature, which means the user can access two tariff plans without any inconvenience.

The device looks like it has been carved out from the design of HTC One and has the same corner bends and sharp edges. The material used, however, is not the same as the one used in HTC One, which deprives the gadget of a premium feel. Looking into the hardware of the gadget, the device gets a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 512MB of RAM, which gives mixed emotions with regards to whether or not to give the device a ‘thumbs up’. RAM is obviously not that high even though the processing strength is ideal, which means the user might experience some problems while multitasking. We have been used to see a lot of entry level gadgets with Android KitKat 4.4 as their operating system, so, Karbonn Opium N7 seems to be a little behind in the software platform with Android Jelly Bean 4.3.

Although, there would not be much of an effect on the number of games and apps that can be accessed by the user, there would be certain differences as far as the interfacing facilities offered by KitKat as compared to Jelly Bean are concerned. The smartphone, Karbonn Opium N7, is compatible with 3G technology with compatible frequencies including 2100MHz as compared to 900 and 1800MHz for 2G SIM. In the camera section, the gadget gets a 5 megapixels primary rear shutter and a VGA secondary shutter, which is ideal for making video calls and clicking selfies. The 1600mAh standard lithium-ion battery is not that high on power but we expect the quad-core processor of the device to be a little demanding, which may be a cause of concern in the future.

Operating system and UI

The screen size of Karbonn Opium N7 is 4 inches with the IPS WVGA touchscreen being backed by a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels and 16 million color depth resolution. The gadget does not offer feather touch experience but is still fast enough for easy going Android experience.

Other Features

Formats of MP3, WAV and AMR are supported by the built-in music player of Karbonn Opium N7 that give a much better sound quality with earphones than it does with loudspeakers. The video player can be utilized for watching videos and movies with decent clarity in multiple formats.

Images can be snapped through Karbonn Opium N7 with the help of its 5 megapixels primary rear camera at a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels. LED flash is provided for the shutter that delivers better results in outdoor conditions whereas video recordings are not that clear when compared to its contemporaries. At the front of the device, a VGA secondary camera allows for video calling and snapping selfies.

Internet can be accessed through Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE and HTML5 browser on Karbonn Opium N7 with a reasonable downloading and surfing speed. The device supports 3G compatibility, which means that websites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube can be accessed at a faster pace despite their high buffering speed.

Karbonn Opium N7 has 4GB of internal memory (ROM) on paper but not all of it would be available for use, which means, the microSD card slot may come into play sooner than later. The external memory can be stretched by up to 32GB through which, loads of data can be stored including songs, games, images and videos.

Other Features

Android Jelly Bean 4.3 is not the most pleasing of software platforms and even though Karbonn Opium N7 is a budget smartphone, we expected more considering the benchmark that has been raised in the last few months for entry level mobile phones. Google play store is preinstalled in the gadget, which would mean the user can download games and apps like NFC, Temple Run 3 and WhatsApp among many others.

Karbonn Opium N7 has a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with which, we expect the battery to be consumed faster than desired and for that the 1600mAh standard lithium-ion battery may not be enough. Although, the standby time and talk time for the same are not mentioned as of yet, we expect both the figures to be decent enough but the same cannot be said about the multimedia usage duration.

Karbonn Opium N7 delivers the goods in the connectivity department by offering the likes of USB port, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi along with HTML5 browser, GPRS and EDGE for accessing the web. The device is compatible with frequencies of 2100MHz for 3G SIM while works well with comptible frequencies of 900 and 1800MHz for 2G SIM.

Other Features

Karbonn Opium N7, when compared to Micromax Bolt A075, has a smaller screen with the former featuring a 4 inches display and the latter - a 5.2 inches display. Both the devices are more or less on the same level as far as resolution and pixel density are concerned but in terms of hardware, Karbonn Opium N7 holds the edge. Karbonn Opium N7 runs on a quad-core processor as compared to the dual-core processor featured by Micromax Bolt A075. RAM is of 512MB for both the gadgets while in the camera department, Karbonn Opium N7 has its nose ahead with an 8 megapixels primary camera as compared to the 5 megapixels primary camera of Micromax Bolt A075. The secondary camera for both the smartphones is of 0.3 megapixels and both the gadgets also have the dual SIM facility.

In terms of power backup, Micromax Bolt A075 holds the edge with a 2200mAh standard lithium-ion battery, thus overpowering the 1600mAh standard lithium-ion battery of Karbonn Opium N7. There is microSD card slot support for both the gadgets for further memory expansion while the internal memory is also at par. There is a stark difference in the software platform for both the devices with Android Jelly Bean 4.3 software platform of Karbonn Opium N7 overpowering the primitive Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 operating system of Micromax Bolt A075.

Other Features

July 8, 2014: The last few months have not exactly been the most ideal ones for Karbonn as the Indian smartphone manufacturing firm has lost quite a bit of its market share. In order to tackle the same, the firm has released Karbonn Opium N7 and Karbonn Opium N9, which are budget devices priced at Rs.5,999 and Rs.8,999 respectively. Karbonn Opium N7 comes with a 4 inches display having a quad-core processor and 512MB of RAM. The device runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.3 operating system and holds a 5 megapixels primary camera along with a VGA secondary camera. There is the presence of dual SIM facility, which makes it ideal for utility purpose as well. The highlights of the device are as follows:

*        4 inches WVGA IPS touchscreen display

*        Dual SIM

*        1.2GHz quad-core processor

*        512MB RAM

*        5 megapixels primary camera + VGA secondary camera

*        1600mAh standard lithium-ion battery

*        4GB internal memory + 32GB microSD card slot

Nice Specs, but should have been around 4.2k. You have to be lucky before you buy cells from Karbonn, Micromax, XOLO, etc as for some they can last long for 2-3 years and for some unlucky guys it may
