Lava Iris 505 Grey - Expert Reviews

Introduction

Lava seems to be on a rampage lately and is trying to get as many smartphones out in the open as it can possibly manage. The idea is to get as many eyeballs as it can which is probably a good decision considering all the other brands are not shying away to do the same thing. iBall, Celkon and Micromax along with many other firms have made sure that this season, almost an explosion of smartphone takes place and continuing the trend is Lava Iris 505 which features a big 5-inch FWVGA display that gives 16 million colors and is pretty good in terms of color saturation and accuracy. The images are bright and the size of the display is certainly ideal for watching videos and movies.

The appearance of the gadget is nothing extraordinarily different in fact, it resembles a lot like the previous Lava smartphones and sports a length of 149.6mm, breadth of 75.9mm along with a thickness of 9.5mm. The bar handset is available in the color of dark grey and is triggered by the standard lithium-ion battery of 2000mAh which churns out a vigorous talk time but the standby time is a bit low. Multimedia usage also seems to suffer during web surfing. Internet access that include surfing websites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube can be done with much ease and convenience through GPRS, EDGE, and HTML web browser while Android Webkit also adds more options to the user's armory. Wi-Fi, USB port, and Bluetooth are the rest of the data connectivity features. The 5-megapixel primary camera is less than what we expected in terms of pixel strength as a 5-inch display certainly represents a flagship device that should, offer more.

Secondary camera is also little soft on pixels with just VGA quality backup that can be used for online video chats. Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system, dual core processor working at a frequency of 1.2GHz and 512MB of RAM are good set of hardware and software support to have that can make the activities like playing games, multitasking, and surfing web more efficient and effective. With access to so many applications and games along with other multimedia features like songs and games, a generous amount of space is necessary and 4GB is somewhere on the same lines or further insulated by the presence of the 32GB microSD card slot.

Operating system and UI

Lava Iris 505 boasts of a massive 5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen supported by the resolution of 480 by 854 pixels and gives away 16 million colors. The swiping is swift as the user gets good color accuracy and saturation.

Other Features

With Lava Iris 505, the user can create a bank of personalized songs that he or she can listen to via earphones and loudspeakers. The earphones are really good with sound especially the clarity of bass which is fantastic. Video player does a good job as well as there is less things to complain about when a 5-inch screen is provided for watching movies.

Camera

Lava Iris 505 has a 5-megapixel primary camera, which though is pretty decent in its own right, but falls short of expectations and certainly the standards of a flagship smartphone. In any case, the user gets to click images at a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels while the VGA secondary camera, which also seems a little frail, operates at 0.3-megapixel. The latter is more useful for making web calls and thus weak pixel strength will not play that much of an important role.

Connectivity

Lava Iris 505 has loads of internet support with Wi-Fi and GPRS along with HTML browser for enjoying the services of Facebook and other popular websites. YouTube and other heavy buffering sites are little slow at times. Downloading of data is all right for medium sized data but for large sized data, the gadget struggles at times.

Memory

Lava Iris 505 presents 4GB of internal memory which if used judiciously can accommodate loads of data like songs, games, images, and videos. For real intense usage of the memory, there is the 32GB microSD card slot that if used to its full potential, can be more than enough for forming a massive collection of data. RAM is moderate with 512MB and does okay with the enhancement of the speed of the smartphone.

Other Features

The 5-inch TFT capacitive display of Lava Iris 505 is apt for playing some of the more popular motion sensor games like Temple Run and F1 Race. More games can be brought onto the device through Google Play Store via Android Jelly Bean 4.2 compatibility.

Battery

The figure of 2000mAh is a befitting power backup for Lava Iris 505 that yields a prudent talk time but the standby time does leave a scope for improvement. Lots of games and other multimedia applications can be executed for a longer duration without the power running out, which is a good sign.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi and GPRS are part of the internet connectivity that the device offers. Lava Iris 505 also includes USB port, Bluetooth, and HTML browser as its data connectivity prerogatives. The smartphone supports both 2G and 3G technology.

Other Features

Lava Iris 505 when compared to Micromax Canvas 2 has an identical screen size with 5 inches for both the smartphones but the latter has a much more powerful primary camera of 8 megapixels. Lava Iris 505 on the other hand, has a 5 megapixels primary camera. Secondary camera is VGA for both the smartphones. RAM is of 512MB while internal memory is 4GB along with a 32GB microSD card slot for both the smartphones. Lava Iris 505 runs on the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system while Micromax Canvas 2 has Android Ice Cream Sandwich by its side. A 2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery powers both the devices.

Other Features

September, 2013: Lava continuous to launch smartphones one after the other and this time with Lava Iris 505, they have a 5-inch smartphone which runs on the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system. The device is a little held back in terms of hardware with 512MB RAM and dual core processor. But overall, for the price range it offers, Lava Iris 505 is certainly not a bad bargain at all and gives a healthy set of features. The highlights are as follows:

*        5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen

*        Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system

*        Dual core processor

*        5 megapixels primary camera + VGA secondary camera

*        2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery

*        Dual SIM
