LG Google Nexus 5 16GB Red - Expert Reviews

There have been a few gadgets in the smartphone world which have had a dedicated following since their arrival and continued to remain so even in their newer avatars. The iPhone series is obviously the first to come to mind that has made a massive impact in the world of smartphones and has had some of the most loyal fans. However, there are others too that have achieved somewhat similar successes, if not as much. The Nexus series is a case in point that has managed to capture the imagination of the public and apart from the fact that the series is from Android’s owner, Google, the Nexus series has always been priced carefully so that it remained affordable to the users. LG Nexus 5 is another one that comes to life with a formidable 4.95 inches True HD IPS+ capacitive touchscreen and boosted by a whopping 445ppi of pixel density.

The resolution for the display of the device is 1080 by 1920 pixels and the colour depth resolution as always, stayed at 16 million colors. The Corning Gorilla Glass 3 technology protects the display from any harmful damage. The device, LG Nexus 5 is supportive of 2G, 3G and 4G technologies and can accommodate microSIM for making calls or receiving them. The 130 grams device features a length of 137.9mm, breadth of 69.2mm and thickness of 8.6mm. The fact that the device is compatible with 3G and 4G technologies makes it superfast in terms of web connectivity with features like GPRS and EDGE and delivers up to 32 to 48Kbps of web surfing speed and 42Mbps of download speed. The upload speed obtained is up to 5.76Mbps via HTML5 browser and Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi hot spot, DLNA, Wi-Fi direct, Wi-Fi hot spot and dual band are the popular tethering features that LG Nexus 5 did not miss out on.

There are plenty of options in the data exchange connectivity with the presence of microUSB port 2.0, USB host and USB, on the go. Bluetooth 4.0 is another popular alternative for wireless transactions although NFC is a much faster option that is also provided. The smartphone has 2GB of RAM and a 2.3GHz quad core processor that should do the job when it comes to the smooth functioning of the device. The operating system for LG Nexus 5 gives it an edge over the rest of the smartphones as the device has Android KitKat 4.4 as the built-in software platform while the same is upgradable to Android 4.4.2 KitKat. One of the drawbacks of the gadget is that it lacks a microSD card slot, which means, should the internal memory runs out of space then the user would have to delete data rather than expand the external memory.

There are two versions of LG Nexus 5 in terms of internal memory with 16GB and 32GB. An 8 megapixels primary camera is powerful enough for snapping beautiful images at a resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels. The rear shutter gets some unique facilities like optical image stabilization, auto focus and LED flash. The videos shot are sharp as well with a 1080 pixels resolution to back it up. The secondary camera stays a bit subdued with 1.3 megapixels but is sufficient in strength to make video calls over Wi-Fi. The device has two colors for sale with Black and White but each one has a 2300mAh standard lithium-polymer battery that allows the gadget to live up to a talk time 17 hours and a standby time of up to 300 hours respectively.

Operating system and UI

LG Nexus 5 presents 4.95 inches of True HD IPS+ capacitive touchscreen that latches onto a pixel density of 445ppi and resolution of 1080 by 1920 pixels. The presence of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 technology protects the display from any unwanted damage.

Other Features

LG Nexus 5 is compatible with the formats of MP3, WAV, eAAC+ and AC3 player when it comes to the music player while the video player plays movies in the formats of MP4, H.264 and H.263 player. FM Radio and RDS facilities are important sources of music as well that the LG Nexus 5 provides.

A lot of the devices of similar configuration offer a 13 megapixels primary camera and that is where LG Nexus 5 falls short a bit with an 8 megapixels primary camera that has the backing of a resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels. Auto focus, optical image stabilization, LED flash, Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, photo sphere, HDR and dual recording are the features that the rear camera has with it while the 1.3 megapixels secondary camera is no liability either by allowing video calling over the web. A 1080 pixels of video resolution by the primary camera should keep the user interested in the camera department.

The Internet is fast and powerful with LG Nexus 5 opening up popular websites like Facebook and YouTube with ease and agility. The user can download data like songs, games, images and videos at a speed of 42Mbps while the upload speed offered is of 5.76Mbps. Tethering features for allowing other devices to connect to the web include dual-band, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi hotspot. HTML5 browser, GPRS and EDGE give the users a 32 to 48Kbps web surfing speed.

LG Nexus 5 misses the microSD card slot, which means that the user would have to choose the memory variant very carefully. 16GB and 32GB are the two memory variants available with the gadget that are actually vast enough to accommodate large collection of songs, games, images and videos. RAM is of 2GB, which is again quite capacious for conducting heavier multitasking operations.

Other Features

Android KitKat 4.4 has loads of games in its kitty along with tons of applications that would keep the user interested and engaged. The user would be even more pleased with the fact that LG Nexus 5 is upgradable to Android KitKat 4.4.2 operating system.

LG Nexus 5 triggers a massive talk time of up to 17 hours and a standby time of up to 300 hours. This performance can be attributed to the presence of 2300mAh standard lithium-polymer battery.

There is a heavy connectivity set available with LG Nexus 5, which allows the users to exchange data with other gadgets and access the web. The tethering features offered by the device include dual-band, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi hotspot. MicroUSB port, USB host and USB on-the-go, along with NFC and Bluetooth allow for data exchange. The 2G frequencies of the gadget include 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz while the 3G frequencies supported include 850, 900, 1700 and 1900MHz.

Other Features

LG Nexus 5 when compared to Sony Xperia Z has a slightly smaller screen of 4.95 inches for the former and 5 inches for the latter. The pixel density is 445ppi for LG Nexus 5 while the same is 441ppi for Sony Xperia Z. The display of Sony Xperia Z is dust and waterproof while the same is not true for LG Nexus 5. Both smartphones have 2GB of RAM and a quad core processor although the processor for LG Nexus 5 runs at 2.3GHz as compared to the 1.5GHz for Sony Xperia Z. The secondary camera for LG Nexus 5 is 1.3 megapixels, which is weaker than the 2.2 megapixels front camera of Sony Xperia Z.

The primary camera is also stronger with Sony Xperia Z with 13.1 megapixels as opposed to the 8 megapixels offered by LG Nexus 5. LG Nexus 5 has Android KitKat 4.4.2 upgradable provisions while Sony Xperia Z has Android Jelly Bean 4.3 as the default software platform that is upgradable to Android KitKat 4.4.2. A 2330mAh standard lithium-ion battery powers Sony Xperia Z, which is just ahead of the 2300mAh standard lithium-ion battery of LG Nexus 5.

Other Features

January 15, 2013: LG Nexus 5 has been finally out and has received the attention of the world with its 4.95 inches HD display. The device is equipped with a 2.3GHz quad core processor and 2GB of RAM while Android KitKat 4.4 would come in as the default operating system. The device is now also upgradable to Android KitKat 4.4.2, which would certainly flatter the users. The smartphone is price at Rs.32,499, which is fair enough as compared to the other high-end smartphones. The highlights are as follows:

*        4.95 inches True HD IPS+ capacitive touchscreen

*        Android KitKat 4.4 operating system upgradable to Android KitKat 4.4.2

*        2.3GHz quad core processor
