Maxx AX505 DUO - Expert Reviews

The smartphone industry is on the move again as we get close to the end of another year and firms start to make plans so as to cash in on the holiday spirit of the people. The Indian smartphone manufacturing firms are for now, not competing with the big guns as far as matching their price tags are concerned and in fact, are targeting a different audience that does not put the brand value high on their priority list. Therefore, a tier2 firm would basically try and give more technical specifications at a lower price so as to catch the eye of potential consumer but stay elusive of the high-end audience where the brand name is high on preference. Therefore, we have a device like Maxx AX505 DUO, which is a low priced smartphone but offers some big features including a 5 inches FVWGA capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels.

The display lacks the kind of pixel density - a 5 inches screen should have but at the same time, there is no sloppiness when it comes to swiping. As far as the dimensions of the smartphone are concerned, Maxx AX505 DUO comes with a length of 141.5mm, breadth of 73.7mm and thickness of 9.3mm. At 161 grams, the smartphone is not exactly light. The device is dual SIM and is flexible enough to allow two GSM SIMs to be used simultaneously for making and receiving calls. The 512MB RAM is a bit less according to us and should have been at least doubled considering the scale of the operations a device of such caliber is expected to achieve. The processor is fine with dual core processing strength clocking in at 1.2GHz. Furthermore, the processor is MediaTek so the same effect would not be felt as in the case of gadgets from Samsung or Sony.

The software platform is pretty much what one would like to have with Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 OS. Plenty of applications thus would be within the user's reach along with tons of games to enjoy. The internal memory of Maxx AX505 DUO would be a little short in the long run as almost half of the given space of 4GB would be used up for application installation. Such a situation would require the intervention of a microSD card slot that comes with a 32GB threshold making enough room for a large data collection of songs, games, images and videos. The camera segment unfortunately is disappointing with a 3 megapixels primary camera and a VGA secondary camera. The primary camera unfolds at a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels while the front camera can be used to click images at a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. LED flash does ease things a bit with the primary shutter especially in darker conditions.

The opera mini browser, HTML5 browser, GPRS and EDEG are important factors in making the web connectivity strong and fast with further boost from Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hot spot facilities. A 1700mAh standard lithium-ion battery gives out a respectable amount of talk time and standby time with up to 5 hours and up to 200 hours respectively.

Operating system and UI

Maxx AX505 DUO has a 5 inches FVWGA capacitive touchscreen that is a healthy size by any margin providing images at a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels. The display has some reflection when viewed at skewed angle but otherwise, gives a nice viewing experience.

Other Features

The music player with Maxx AX505 DUO supports the formats of MP3, AAC, AAC+, AMR, MIDI, OGG ,FLAC ,WAV  and M4A and plays the desired songs without any problems. The video player runs movies in the formats MP4, 3GP, AVI, MKV and MOV. FM radio is another application for listening to songs being played on radio stations of the respective cities.

A stronger camera was expected than a 3 megapixels primary shutter that the Maxx AX505 DUO offers. With 2048 by 1536 pixels resolution, the images look good and further get the assistance of auto focus, digital zoom and LED flash. Video calling is imperative today and the VGA secondary camera does not deny the user that opportunity at a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels.

GPRS and EDGE add value to the already installed opera mini and HTML5 browser for a smooth web interaction that may include access to websites like Facebook and Twitter. Downloading is not express fast but doable, especially for medium sized data. Wi-Fi hot spot and Wi-Fi facility are vital for wireless access to Internet.

There is a lot that a user can do with the 4GB internal memory if the space is utilized judiciously or by adding and deleting data as and when required. In case the user is not interested in chopping and slashing of data, Maxx AX505 DUO gives a microSD card slot that holds a 32GB stretchable limit for a wider array of data collection. RAM of 512MB should have been more for smoother functioning but it does a good job anyways with the dual core processor.

Other Features

The Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system lets the users of Maxx AX505 DUO enjoy the services of applications like WhatsApp and Viber along with games like Fruit Ninja and various other racing games.

Maxx AX505 DUO churns out a talk time of up to 5 hours and a standby time of up to 200 hours with the help of its 1700mAh standard lithium-ion battery. Multimedia activities have a tendency to draw out more power from the gadget but otherwise, the device holds up pretty well.

Wi-Fi hot spot and Wi-Fi are Internet connectivity offerings from Maxx AX505 DUO while Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE and USB port are also present. The dual band frequencies of 900 and 1800MHz support the GSM SIMs of the gadget for making calls.

Other Features

Maxx AX505 DUO when compared to Micromax Canvas 4 has an identical screen size with 5 inches each but the resolution and pixel density are much higher with the latter as compared to the former. Maxx AX505 DUO has a 3 megapixels primary camera while Micromax Canvas 4 features a 13 megapixels primary camera. Similarly, the secondary camera of Micromax Canvas 4 also crushes Maxx AX505 DUO with 5 megapixels for the former and 0.3 megapixels for the latter. Maxx AX505 DUO has 512MB of RAM while Micromax Canvas 4 features 1GB of RAM. Internal memory is 4GB with Maxx AX505 DUO while the same is 16GB with Micromax Canvas 4. The 2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery of Micromax Canvas 4 is better than the 1700mAh standard lithium-ion battery of Maxx AX505 DUO. A dual core processor powers Maxx AX505 DUO while Micromax Canvas 4 runs on the quad core processor.
