Maxx MSD7 3G AX51 - Expert Reviews
Another year is about to come to an end and looking back, it is amazing to see the kind of evolution that has taken place in the world of smartphones. The big and powerful processors and larger screen sizes have taken a shape that nobody would have been able to anticipate a few years back. The exponential growth has led to improved facilities like better photography and faster Internet thus reaching a level that at times, removes the need for a user to have a laptop or a computer. The rise of Android as an independent platform has also allowed the new and upcoming brands to step up and raise their games, and give a much more economical option to the consumers. Maxx is also one of those brands that have under its belt, Maxx AX51 that features a 5 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen. A resolution of 480 by 854 pixels is not the most resounding one we have seen but does the trick when it comes to image clarity and appropriateness.
At 161 grams, Maxx AX51 does seem to be a bit heavy which can also be attributed to its overall dimensions involving a length of 141.5mm, breadth of 73.7mm and thickness of 9.3mm. The smartphone looks well made around the corners and is easy to hold in the palm. The dual core 1.2GHz processor is a promising start for the hardware of the gadget but 512MB RAM fails to impress us as it might compromise the overall performance of the gadget in terms of speed, especially when multiple tasks are being handled. The Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system is a good sign for the software platform ensuring a satisfactory touchscreen experience and providing usability of loads of apps and games. Dual SIM is an expected feature in economical devices of tier2 brands and Maxx AX51 is no different making sure that two tariff plans can be exploited with the dual standby mode.
An internal memory of 4GB may not suffice for a long time should the user is eager to store a larger amount of data and in such a case, would demand the augmentation of the external memory via the microSD card slot of 32GB capacity. The primary camera of 3 megapixels would not please the users when it comes to the pixel strength. Resolution offered by the shutter is 2048 by 1536 pixels with digital zoom, auto focus and LED flash for backup in tougher terrains. A VGA secondary front camera is also available with the gadget for video calling purposes. Despite the weak camera segment, Wi-Fi hot spot is an important and high profile feature that the smartphone delivers that engages other compatible devices with Internet facilities via the smartphone itself. GPRS, EDGE, WAP browser and Wi-Fi do their bit as usual and come out with a decent downloading speed in favorable conditions. Music player, video player and FM radio are tools for entertainment access that the entertainment world has to provide with respect to the latest songs and videos. With 1700mAh standard lithium-ion battery, the user can make Maxx AX51 last for quite a while but the talk time does not reflect the same with up to 5 hours, which is not bad but just above average. The standby time stretches up to 200 hours.
Operating system and UI
The 5 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen is not reflection free but the resolution at which the pictures are produced, is reasonable at 480 by 854 pixels. Pixel density again is not that impressive that results in slightly less colorful results.
MP3, AAC, AAC+, AMR, MIDI, Ogg, flac, WAV and MP4 are some of the features that the music player of Maxx AX51 works with. The earphones are decent too in terms of quality but lack the treble and bass volume. The video player too is a great application to have with the 5 inches screen for watching videos in desired formats.
The 3 megapixels primary camera would fall short miserably when compared to the powerful big shot shutters of similar other gadgets. Maxx AX51 has missed a trick in this department where the secondary camera is also not that powerful with 0.3 megapixel VGA strength. The primary shutter runs at a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels whereas the secondary shutter captures images at 640 by 480 pixels. LED flash, auto focus and digital zoom are given as well.
Wi-Fi hot spot can create a new connection for other gadgets to connect to the web in Maxx AX51 that also comes with Wi-Fi, dual band, GPRS, EDGE and WAP browser. Facebook is easily accessible while YouTube and other video running websites take a bit of time to load with a high buffering speed.
Maxx AX51 has a 4GB internal memory repository out of which, a considerable amount would be used up for application installation. Therefore, the given space may run out faster than anticipated and hence, the microSD card slot would have to come into play sooner than later. As a result, up to 32GB of data can be kept in the device including songs, games, images and videos. The RAM of 512MB is below our liking.
Games would not be a problem with Maxx AX51 as the smartphone runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system. Therefore, games like Angry Birds and F1 Race can be downloaded from Google play store along with some great apps like Talking Tom and WhatsApp.
A robust device would require a longer usage time and the 1700mAh standard lithium-ion just about reaches a bare minimum level with a talk time of up to 5 hours alongside a standby time of up to 200 hours.
USB port can be used for data exchange with Maxx AX51 via the USB cable or if the user prefers wireless transaction, he or she can avail of the same results with Bluetooth. For Internet, there is Wi-Fi,Wi-Fi hot spot, GPRS and EDGE. The dual SIM gadget is suitable with frequencies of 900 and 1800MHz.
Maxx AX51 when compared to Karbonn Titanium S5 has the same screen size of 5 inches where the pixel density for both the smartphones goes neck and neck. The software platform though is slightly superior with Maxx AX51 as it runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system while Karbonn Titanium S5 runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system. RAM offered by Karbonn Titanium S5 is double of what the Maxx AX51 offers with 1GB for the former and 512MB for the latter. There is a big difference in the camera department of both the smartphones with Karbonn Titanium S5 featuring an 8 megapixels primary camera as compared to the 3 megapixels provided by Maxx AX51. The secondary camera for Karbonn Titanium S5 is 2 megapixels, again exceeding the 0.3 megapixels offered by Maxx AX51. The processor for Karbonn Titanium S5 is quad core while the same is dual core for Maxx AX51. Finally, Karbonn Titanium S5 continues its domination in the battery department as well with a 2000mAh power backup as opposed to the 1700mAh standard lithium-ion power backup for Maxx AX51.
