Maxx MX247 - Expert Reviews
The new entrant Maxx has already established quite an extensive range of smartphones in their lineup. But the importance of budget Android-less devices cannot be more emphasized in a developing country like India. There is a heavy segment of population in the rural areas or less privileged sector where the user of smartphone is not much and rather a basic gadget designed for a beginner is required. Almost all the tier2 brand understand the idea and keep a section open for such audience as the sales would on a massive scale. Therefore keeping that in mind we have Maxx MX247 that features a 2.4-inch TFT display with an alphanumeric keypad for interaction. The dimensions of the device include a length of 118.3mm, a breadth of 50.3mm and a thickness of 12.9mm. The device weighs 84 grams and has a pixel density of 167ppi.
A VGA primary camera is provided at the back side of Maxx MX247 that does well staying within its limitations at a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. There is the digital zoom facility which is not really that strong and hence does not give that much clarity on zooming. The internal memory of the device does not give much apart from space for 250 contacts along with up to 100 SMS's. So keeping that in mind an 8GB microSD card slot always brings in security for the user so that he or she can keep loads of songs, games, images and videos. The device lacks any kind of access to web which is a big drawback but then again considering the kind of audience this device is being directed at, it should not matter much. Other connectivity options are safe though with access to Bluetooth and USB port.
Powered by the standard lithium-ion battery of 1,050mAh, Maxx MX247 gives away a lowly talk time of up to 3 hours while the standby time is very good with up to 400 hours. Entertainment value for the gadget depends on the music player, FM radio and the video player. The former two are sources of musical tracks that can be heard via loudspeakers or through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5mm jack. Watching videos on a small 2.4-inch display may not be the most entertaining experience but its presence is nonetheless an advantage. For utility purposes there is the dual-SIM facility allowing two GSM SIM cards to be inserted in the same device.
Operating system and UI
Maxx MX247 features a 2.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 240 by 320 pixels. There is 256k color resolution supported by a feeble pixel density of 167ppi.
With music player and FM radio as the only tools to lean on, Maxx MX247 allows the user to create a personalized playlist of songs that can be played through the mp3 player. FM radio is for listening to the popular radio stations. Video player plays videos in the Mp4 player although the small screen is certainly not ideal for it.
Maxx MX247 has a frail VGA camera that has a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels and can be used for snapping images and shooting videos. Digital zoom is there but is not as effective as one would like it to be.
Maxx MX247 does not have any Internet support which may not be the best of signs for any gadget but the device is anyways directed towards those who are not well versed with the technology.
Maxx MX247 does not have much under its belt when it comes to internal storage capacity. All the user can manage is up to 250 contacts and a few SMS's. The external memory can be stretched up to 8GB, which is always a formidable number allowing a big data collection.
Maxx MX247 really is weak when it comes to games as there are only two or three vague games available with the device. There is no web connection so there is no possible means to download more games onto the device.
Maxx MX247 comes with a 1,050mAh standard lithium-ion battery capable of producing a standby time of up to 400 hours which is pretty long under normal circumstances. The talk time is however low with just up to 3 hours that can go up to as high as 4 hours on good days. Listening to songs or watching videos does not consume much powedr either which adds value to the battery life of the gadget.
Maxx MX247 is modest in the connectivity department with just Bluetooth and USB port as its components. Both of them can be used to exchange data with other devices. The device works at the frequencies of 900MHz and 1800MHz.
Maxx MX247 when compared to iBall Fab9 has a similar screen size of 2.4 inches with identical resolution of 240 by 320 pixels. The camera is stronger with iBall Fab9 with 1.3 megapixels as compared to what the Maxx MX247 offers with 0.3 megapixels. iBall Fab9 is heavier than Maxx MX247 which can also be attributed to the fact that the former has a heavier battery too with 1,200mAh standard lithium-ion power backup as compared to the 1,050mAh offered by Maxx MX247. Therefore the talk time offered by iBall Fab9 is also more with up to 5 hours whereas the Maxx MX247 offers up to 3 hours. The standby time however is more with Maxx MX247. Both the gadgets offer a microSD card slot but Maxx MX247 has an 8GB capacity which is half of what iBall Fab9 has to offer with 16GB capacity.
14th August, 2013: Maxx MX247 is one of the few devices that Maxx have released but which do not fall in the smartphone lineup. The device is Android-free and comes with a 2.4-inch display that is designed mainly to appeal to the lower section of the society in terms of economy.
