Micromax Canvas Ego A113 Grey - Expert Reviews

Introduction

The domestic smartphone manufacturing companies are raising their game and the same has been the trend observed in the last few years with firms like Karbonn and Micromax producing economical high-end devices. In fact, both these firms have been quite popular among the college going populace who are looking for a more economical option as compared to the big brand names like Samsung and HTC. Moving along the same path, Micromax had added a device named Micromax Canvas Ego A113 with Android Jelly Bean 4.2 as its OS, into its inventory. The reason behind the title of the smartphone is not clear but it is certainly catchy. One has to say that Micromax is constantly improving the design aspect of its devices. Micromax Canvas Ego A113 reminds us of the pre-HTC One devices like HTC One X and One X+, especially from the lower side of the device.

The display looks sharp with a 4.7-inch screen offering a resolution of 960 by 540 pixels along with 16 million colors. The qHD display has a nice flow when it comes to swiping and is quite responsive to that swiping. Internal memory is big in size and some of it would be available for the user to store data while other would be used for installation of applications. 4GB space is what the user gets for keeping things like songs, games, images, and videos. A microSD card slot boosts the memory segment even further with a 32GB limit. A quad core processor clocking at 1.2GHz is pretty sweet that would excite the gamers and those who like to use their smartphones in a hardy manner. Dual SIM is a feature that Micromax seems to embed in almost all of its devices and here too, the user can keep two GSM SIMs activated at the same time.

Internet is fast with the smartphone through methods like GPRS, EDGE, WAP browser, and Wi-Fi. The camera department is beefed up with an 8-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel secondary camera both of which are formidable in their tasks. LED flash and digital zoom are some of the features that are associated with the camera that should please the lovers of photography. A 2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery is right about what the user would have wanted with the smartphone and comes out with a talk time of up to 6 hours along with a standby time of up to 220 hours.

Operating system and UI

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 has a healthy 4.7-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen that is qHD and works at a resolution of 960 by 540 pixels. Performance is fast and easy with close to no lag or sluggishness, a trait that always remains helpful in activities like games.

Other Features

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 offers a music player that supports formats like MP3, MIDI, AMR, and AAC while the video player that runs videos is suitable with all formats. FM radio is present too through which, songs played on the radio stations can be recorded as well. A 3.5mm jack for connecting an earphone to the device is provided at the top while loudspeakers are there as well.

Camera

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 provides a powerful 8-megapixel camera that runs at a resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels and has features like LED flash that make it easier to snap images in darker backgrounds. Digital zoom and geo-tagging are other features along with auto focus that accompany the smartphone. A 2-megapixel secondary camera is also well backed up with a lot of resolution pixels that enable video calling and web chatting with better quality and clarity.

Connectivity

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 has loads of internet features like Wi-Fi and GPRS through which, the user can download data like songs, games, images, and videos at a fast pace. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter are the heavy buffering websites that are can be accessed at a fast pace as well.

Memory

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 has a healthy memory department. On dissecting it, we find that 4GB is available for the user to store stuff like songs and movies while another 1.31GB is provided for installing applications. 1.41GB mass memory is also available and beyond all this, a microSD card slot for external memory augmentation up to 32GB is another option that can be explored if the user does not find the internal memory to be sufficient.

Other Features

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 comes with some good and entertaining Android games like Fruit Devil and The Dark Man that come pre-installed in the device. Android Jelly Bean 4.2 software platform can open doors to a huge bank of similar games and applications that the user can download from the Google Play Store.

Battery

The 2000mAh standard lithium-ion carves out a talk time of up to 6 hours for Micromax Canvas Ego A113 while the standby time generated is up to 220 hours. Both the figures are average while the multimedia usage time is also not expected to upstage the trend.

Connectivity

With dual band frequencies working at the bandwidths of 900MHz and 1800MHz, the user can use two GSM SIMs with ease. Micromax Canvas Ego A113 has other connectivity features as well like USB port, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS, and EDGE.

Other Features

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 when compared to Samsung Galaxy S3 has a similar screen size with 4.7 inches but the latter is much sharper and has a higher pixel density. Micromax Canvas Ego A113 has an 8-megapixel primary camera just like the Samsung Galaxy S3 but the secondary camera of the former edges ahead of the latter by a whisker. Micromax Canvas Ego A113 offers 2-megapixel strength while 1.9-megapixel is what the Samsung Galaxy S3 offers. Micromax Canvas Ego A113 has the Android Jelly Bean software platform while Samsung Galaxy S3 has an Android Ice Cream Sandwich but it is upgradable to Android Jelly Bean too. Battery strength is 2100mAh standard lithium-ion for Samsung Galaxy S3 while the same is 2000mAh for Micromax Canvas Ego A113. The difference in the standby time and talk time is massive through with Samsung Galaxy S3 pins down Micromax Canvas Ego A113.

Other Features

September 3, 2013: Micromax Canvas Ego A113 is the smartphone from the fast growing and evolving company Micromax that has been quietly introduced. The device is available on e-commere site 'Snapdeal.com' at a price point of Rs. 12,999. The device looks really good with classy finish giving it the required elegance. It's not just the looks but also the features like quad core processor and an 8-megapixel camera that makes the device stand out. With similar options available from Samsung and Karbonn, it would be interesting to observe the consumers’ reaction. Highlights of the device are as follows:

*        4.7-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen

*        Android Jelly 4.2 Bean operating system

*        8-megapixel primary camera + 2-megapixel secondary camera

*        2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery
