Micromax Canvas L A108 - Expert Reviews
Looking back at the last couple of years, the smartphone market has had its fair share of surprises and saturation. There have been a lot of new innovations and game changing moments while at the same time, there have been instances where we felt that there were not enough transcending changes being implemented by even the most high profile firms. Throughout these ups and downs, credible firms are able to stand the test of time and show their true steel and surprisingly enough, Micromax has been one of them. This Indian smartphone maker has managed to stay firm and kept itself at par in terms of sales too. The Canvas series has certainly taken it to newer heights and it would certainly have its hopes pinned on the new versions like Micromax Canvas L A108.
Micromax Canvas L A108 is a 5.5 inches phablet that features some neat specifications that would keep the user interested. The IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen of the device is not that high in terms of pixel density and resolution but the bigger screen should please users while watching movies and videos. The smartphone has dual SIM and is compatible with 3G network. Available in two colors of Black and White, Micromax Canvas L A108 looks decent in both versions but the former may be a better option for subtlety. Under the hood, the smartphone comprises of a MediaTek 1.3GHz quad-core processor while the GPU used is Mali-400MP2. RAM used is of 1GB capacity, which makes the hardware of the smartphone apt to utilize what Android KitKat 4.4.2 has to offer in terms of games and applications.
Micromax has always preferred MediaTek over Snapdragon as that gives it the flexibility to lower its cost of operations and thus offer products at a comparatively lower price. This allows the firm to enhance other specifications including the memory department that in here, offers 8GB for internal storage and 32GB for the microSD card. The camera section looks well sought after as well with an 8 megapixels primary camera and a 2 megapixels secondary camera. Internet is fast while tethering facilities are present too.
Operating system and UI
The display size is huge with Micromax Canvas L A108 at 5.5 inches IPS LCD touchscreen, which is a great asset to have for a device of such price range. The display in terms of sharpness and color saturation is not the best that we have come across with a pixel density of 200ppi and resolution of 540 by 960 pixels. However, there is not much reflection from the side angles as the display maintains comfortable viewing position.
The multimedia section of Micromax Canvas L A108 mobile has a music player and FM radio for accessing popular music. The music player plays songs in the formats of MP3, AAC and WAV player while the FM radio would simply provide access to local radio stations active in particular cities and regions. Videos can be played in the formats of MP4, H.263 and WMV player via the embedded video player. The music player is easy to interact with smart pause and play button. There is a compatible 3.5mm audio jack to connect earphones to the device that needs to be inserted should the radio FM has to be activated.
Micromax Canvas L A108 comes with an 8 megapixels primary camera that has HDR support for producing better color saturation of images carved out at a resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels. The shutter also has LED flash, auto focus, face detection, panorama, and geo-tagging and touch focus for enhancing the image. Videos are reasonably good at 720 pixels, although it does have its blurry moments. The secondary camera is pretty well stacked up with a 2 megapixels sensor and contributes towards snapping selfies and making video calls over 3G Wi-Fi.
Downloading of data at 21Mbps speed is pretty quick for medium and large sized data including games, movies, images and songs. Also, uploading of data can be done at 5.76Mbps while the surfing speed through GPRS and EDGE is between 32 to 48Kbps. The device also has Wi-Fi hot spot for tethering.
The 8GB internal memory is a great change from the standard 4GB internal memory that is offered by most smartphones at the given price. Here, Micromax Canvas L A108 gets the luxury to keep a substantial amount of data like songs, games, images and videos without the space running out. There is a 32GB expansion slot for the device to expand the external memory for an even larger data collection. RAM is pretty safe at 1GB, thus keeping the operational speed of the smartphone snappy enough.
The presence of Android KitKat 4.4.2 is a great boost to Micromax Canvas L A108 and its users with the device being compatible for the latest games and applications. Battery saver, Folder locker, live wallpaper are just few of the goodies that can be downloaded by the user for aesthetics and utility while there are plenty of games available online for entertainment as well in the form of Shadow fighting, Rage of Immortals, NFC, Asphalt etc., that can be downloaded from the Google Play store.
We are impressed by the 8 hours of talk time delivered by Micromax Canvas L A108 through its standard lithium-ion battery of 2350mAh power capacity whereas the standby time is just above average at 210 hours. Multimedia usage and multitasking will consume more power at a faster pace but the user can download apps like smartpower that will guide him / her in saving battery.
Various facilities like Wi-Fi hot spot and Bluetooth remain as the wireless elements for spreading the Internet connection and exchanging data with other devices. Micromax Canvas L A108 is also equipped with GPRS, EDGE and HTML5 browser for web connectivity while USB port can be used for charging the gadget or transferring data to other peripherals. The 3G network of the smartphone is compatible with 2100MHz frequency whereas the 2G network supports 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz compatible frequencies.
Although, Motorola Moto G has been priced higher than Micromax Canvas L A108, we feel the latter has a better match up with the Android gadget from Xolo called Xolo Q900S. In terms of display size, Micromax Canvas L A108 is way ahead of Xolo Q900S with 5.5 inches for the former and 4.7 inches for the latter. The pixel density and resolution are higher with Xolo Q900S while both the devices are dual SIM in nature. Although, on paper, the hardware in both the devices are almost the same with 1.3GHz quad-core processor for Micromax Canvas L A108 and 1.2GHz quad-core processor for Xolo Q900S, we prefer the Snapdragon version of the latter as compared to the MediaTek version of the former.
RAM is 1GB with both the devices while the memory segregation is also the same with 8GB of internal memory and 32GB of microSD card slot. The camera department is identical in both the smartphones with an 8 megapixels primary camera and a 2 megapixels secondary camera. Micromax Canvas L A108 wins in the battery section with a 2350mAh standard lithium-ion battery as opposed to the 1800mAh standard lithium-ion battery featured by Xolo Q900S. Micromax Canvas L A108 runs on Android KitKat 4.4.2 operating system to begin with while Xolo Q900S has Android Jelly Bean 4.3 operating system as its default software platform. However, Xolo Q900S can also be upgraded to Android KitKat 4.4.
July 31, 2014: Another Canvas model from the Indian smartphone maker, Micromax, is up for grabs as Micromax Canvas L A108 is now available at a price of Rs.10,499. The device is a phablet with a massive 5.5 inches IPS LCD capacitive display. We like the hardware of this Android KitKat 4.4.2 running device featuring a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The camera section provided is better than the likes of Motorola Moto G and HTC Desire 516 at 8 megapixels primary camera and a 2 megapixels secondary camera. * Dual SIM
* 1.3GHz quad-core processor
* Android KitKat 4.4.2 operating system
