Nokia 301 White - Expert Reviews

As other companies like Samsung and HTC look to stretch out their lead over the rest, Nokia is focusing on being consistent. The company is trying hard to regain its days of glory and with it probably a strong hold over sales in the market. Microsoft Windows Phone 8 is just starting to take a lift in the market but it still has a long way to go before it thinks about taking over Android. But Nokia incorporates Windows 8 for its mid range and premium devices but for the budget devices, it still depends on the Symbian as its savior. Nokia 301 is a small scale device that has a minuscule 2.4-inch display with alphanumeric keypad below it for interaction. The pixel density is not the best but the small size of the screen compensates for it. Considering the dimensions of the device, Nokia 301 has a length of 114mm, a breadth of 50mm and a thickness of 12.5mm. At 102 grams, Nokia 301 is very low on RAM with just 64MB which takes us back to the old days of desktop and computers that used to feature such figures. Internal memory of the gadget is 256MB while a 32GB microSD card slot is provided for more space in future. The device has the dual-SIM facility which allows the users to keep two numbers activated at the same time for making calls or receiving them. There are various browsers that the device offer including WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML for accessing web and surfing popular websites like Facebook and Twitter. The device lacks Wi-Fi or any other WLAN connection but the device is still able to garner a decent speed of 7.2mbps for downloading and 5.76mbps for uploading purposes.

Bluetooth and USB port can be used for connecting with other devices, either wirelessly or via USB cable to exchange data with them. There is no secondary camera offered by Nokia 301 but the primary one works well and produces good quality pictures at 3.2 megapixels and a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels. Video recordings are nothing special with QVGA quality but at 30 frames per second, they can be useful in times of need. Cyan, Black, Yellow, Magenta and White are the four colors in which the device is available clearly indicating that Nokia is targeting the youth. One trait that Nokia as a company has its grip on is the battery strength. Nokia 301 is powered by the standard lithium-ion battery of 1,110mAh that is responsible for the outstanding standby time of up to 888 hours in 2G and up to 936 hours in 3G. The talktime is up to 20 hours in 2G which drops by a huge margin in 3G as it goes down to 6 hours.

Operating system and UI

Nokia 301 comes with a modest 2.4-inch TFT screen that has an alphanumeric keypad for communication. The display is supported by the resolution of 240 by 320 pixels along with a pixel density of 167ppi. With 256k colors for support, Nokia 301 does alright in clarity and conciseness of images.

Other Features

Nokia 301 has a music player that has a heavy bass and treble support making the sound quality clear and loud. The user can create a customized list of songs that can be heard in the formats MP3, WAV, WMA and AAC player whereas the video player works in formats including MP4, H.263 and WMV player. FM radio for enjoying popular radio stations is also available which can only be listened to by connecting the earphones to the device via 3.5mm jack.

Nokia 301 has 3.2 megapixel camera at the back end that can snap worthy images at a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels. The indoor shots are pretty nice and bright whereas the outdoor shots on occasions are too blurry and covered with lines that ruin the overall quality. QVGA is not a nice indication for quality purposes but video recordings are still not the worst and can be useful when required urgently.

Nokia 301 has GPRS and EDGE to accompany the various browser support that includes WAP 2.0/xHTML and HTML. The users can download data at a speed of 7.2mbps while the uploading speed is up to 5.76mbps. Facebook is also easy to browse but YouTube, being a heavy data consuming website, is hard to keep your grip on.

Nokia 301 offers 256MB internal memory which is very less and would run out soon but the shortage can be compensated with the microSD card slot that has the ability to stretch the external memory of the gadget up to 32GB. The device can therefore hold data including songs, games, images and videos.

Other Features

Nokia 301 offers lots of games that are pre-installed in the gadget while more are available online for entertainment purposes. As far as comparison with Android is concerned, Nokia 301 is still way short of it in terms of quality and quantity.

Nokia 301 runs on the standard lithium-ion battery of 1110mAh which yields some staggering numbers in terms of standby time and talktime. The standby time offered is up to 888 hours in 2G and up to 936 hours in 3G. The talktime is up to 20 hours in 2G and up to 6 hours in 3G.

Nokia 301 has Bluetooth and USB port covering the data exchange aspect while GPRS, EDGE look after the  web connectivity. The users can use the GPRS facility for navigation purposes as well.

Other Features

Nokia 301 when compared to Nokia Asha 300 has a identical display with 2.4 inches but the former has a TFT capacitive screen and the latter resistive. Nokia Asha 300 has the touchscreen facility which the Nokia 301 does not. Nokia Asha 300 has double the RAM of Nokia 301 with 128MB for the former. Nokia 301 has the dual-SIM facility which is not provided by Nokia Asha 300. The camera is better with Nokia Asha 300 with 5 megapixels as compared to 3.2 megapixels offered by Nokia 301 but the latter has a stronger battery backup.
