Nokia Asha 230 Black - Expert Reviews

Introduction

Nokia is famous for coming up with affordable phones that are packed with all the necessary features that one might need to keep in touch with the world. In a mobile market that is filled with well-grounded players like Samsung and Apple and their big screen phones, Nokia has boldly launched the low-end Nokia Asha 230, a dual SIM phone. This ‘easy on the pocket’ phone has received a warm welcome from consumers who want all the essential features of a smartphone but tagged with a nominal price.

Nokia has never disappointed its fans when it comes to budget phones. Nokia’s Asha might be a stubby little device that would neither impress people easily by its looks nor make someone do a double take. But the built is far better in terms of sturdiness when compared to all the ultra-high versions out in the market. Nokia Asha 230 has a plastic built, which feels very compact in the hands. These days where every new player is focussing on offering roomy touchscreen phones, it is not very common to find a phone that features a smaller touchscreen like the one in Nokia Asha 230. But for the price that Nokia is offering, one cannot expect more.

Operating system and UI

Nokia Asha 230 features a 2.8 inches capacitive multi point touchscreen display that uses LCD transflective display technology. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8225 system chip and a dual-core 1200MHz ARM Cortex-A5 processor. It runs on Nokia Asha operating system version 1.1.1, which has been exclusively designed for the low-end budget phones belonging to the Asha series. When it comes to the display, this phone presents its users with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and a pixel density of 142 pixels per inch. Like the unique looking Nokia Asha 503, Asha 230 also uses a two-screen layout that allows access to apps homescreen and a fastlane display. The fastlane display will give users notifications from their favourite applications along with quick access to calendar events, music controls, social sharing and several other functions.

Other Features

Nokia has put together a basic package on this phone to entertain its users such as - stereo FM Radio, a 3.5mm jack for your headphones and a loudspeaker. A very simple, fixed focus, 3X digital zoom, 1.3MP camera sits comfortably on the rear of the phone. Other features in the camera include CMOS image sensor, digital image stabilization, white balance presets, and a self-timer. It looks like Nokia decided against throwing in a good old flash along with this phone for the price. Users also get to shoot videos in QVGA format at 15fps and watch the same at 25fps. The music playback time and video playback time are 42 hours and 8 hours respectively.

Camera

A budget phone without any doubt translates to mediocre picture and video quality and Nokia Asha 230 belongs to this class. The 1.3MP camera provides users with means to snap pictures and take videos. There is no secondary camera though, so video chat on web can be ruled out.

Connectivity

Nokia Asha does not support 3G network but lets the users stay connected with 2G connectivity through features like GPRS and EDGE. Though the absence of Wi-Fi may be a big disappointment to the users, other connectivity options make up for it.

Memory

Nokia Asha 230 comes with 64MB of RAM and an external memory that can be expanded up to a good 32GB via microSD card slot to store all your files, songs and videos. But be ready to deal with a little sluggishness in the long run, should you plan to store high volume of data. This phone also offers a free cloud storage of 7GB.

Other Features

The Nokia Asha platform 1.1.1 is closely linked with all the social networks. With this phone, all the popular social networking apps such as Facebook, Twitter, WeChat and Line are just a swipe away. The HERE map will offer the users excellent walking and driving directions. With the FastLane displaying immediate notifications, you will not miss even a single message from your friends. In addition to all the very famous apps, Nokia Asha 230 also offers a brilliant bundle of cool games from the Nokia store including Assasin’s Creed 3, Sin City Deluxe, World at Arms along with several other games and free applications.

Battery

Nokia Asha 230 features a removable BL-5C 1020mAh battery with the facility of USB charging. The maximum talk time is roughly estimated to be around 12 hours on 2G and the maximum standby time is of 33 days.

Connectivity

Nokia Asha 230 offers GSM: 2G and EDGE connectivity along with Bluetooth. Nokia’s very own, innovative SLAM technology allows the user to transfer pictures between compatible phones at a good speed.

Other Features

Nokia Asha 230 targets buyers who are looking to buy a cheap phone loaded with all the essential features. This cute and compact phone, being part of the Asha family comes in several attractive colours such as Bright Red, Bright Green, Yellow, Cyan, White and Black. When compared to its forerunner, Nokia Asha 501, Nokia Asha 230 is a little lighter at 89 grams. The screen on Nokia Asha 501 that measures 3 inches looks very spacious when compared to the screen on Nokia Asha 230.

While Asha 501 and Asha 230 present the users with almost similar features, one can easily say that the former outruns the latter in terms of Wi-Fi connectivity, battery capacity, talk time, music playback time and screen size. The Asha platform that runs the 230 version is much more tailored to the users’ needs and is linked to all the social networks in a better way. Since the price factor plays a significant role when buying a phone, Nokia Asha 230 will attract more attention from the crowd that has the strictest budget limits for buying a phone.

Other Features

24 February 2014: Nokia Asha 230, the new addition to the Asha family has been launched without much fanfare. This low-cost model is perfect for Nokia fans looking to buy a phone with all the vital aspects at a great price. Though the phone does not offer a blazing display of bravura, it still offers the user with a reasonable performance even at its ultra-low price. It has all the basic features one would expect to have in a phone such as a touchscreen, social networking apps, Map, games, camera, video recording, microSD slot, 2G and Bluetooth. It comes in unique colours that will make it stand out in a crowd.

Apart from the absence of 3G, another bitter pill that could disappoint the budget phone lovers is the phone’s lack of Wi-Fi hotspot. Other than that, this phone packed with all the necessary and cool features will fare very well in the mobile market among people who are looking for an inexpensive phone with all the necessary features. The highlights of the device are as follows:

*        2.8 inches capacitive multi point touchscreen

*        Asha Platform 1.1.1 OS

*        64MB RAM, expandable storage up to 32GB and 7GB of free cloud storage

*        Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8225 dual-core processor

*        Proximity and Accelorometer sensors

*        Radio FM

*        Rear camera of 1.3 megapixels

*        Dual SIM GSM Phone
