Nokia Lumia 820 Yellow - Expert Reviews

Introduction

Nokia has been looking to increase their market share and the market share of Windows operating system featuring devices for some time although they have not received considerable success doing the same. The Android market had exploded so quickly and its impact has been so powerful that lot of companies had to suffer and they are still trying to get back up on its feet ever since. BlackBerry and Nokia are examples of the same. Nokia Lumia 820 is a mid range device that comes backed by the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 operating system along with a Dual-core 1.5GHz Krait processor. The Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon chipset is pretty quick along with Adreno GPU. The look of the device is boring for few but we found it pretty new and exciting with new color ranges like Black, Gray, Red, Yellow, White, Blue and Violet. The back cover is a hassle to remove but overall the device looks pretty sturdy like most Nokia Handsets. The 4.3 inch screen is AMOLED capacitive, powered by Nokia ClearBlack Display. The device has the dimensions of 123.8mm x 68.5mm x 9.9mm, 83.5cc of volume and is slightly on the heavier side with a weight of 160 grams. Let us talk about the multimedia aspect of the device with a music player which when heard through the earphones is backed by the Dolby Headphone sound enhancement with a pretty good sound quality.

Internal memory is also pretty well backed up with 8GB, while the external memory can be expanded up to 64GB with the help of a microSD card slot. RAM of 1GB works just fine to enhance the speed of the device. Data connectivity feature are very well sought after with the Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct ensuring that web can be accessed with minimum fuss and ease. The device is also NFC capable while the Blueooth and USB port facilities are also provided. Camera is of 8 megapixels strength that gives a resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels while a secondary VGA camera is also provided. The quality of the pictures produced are good but you would expect better results from a 8 megapixels camera. A standard lithium ion battery of 1650 mAh powers the device to shield out a formidable talk time and standby time and makes sure that the device can be used for a substantial amount of time without his or her work being cut out in the middle. In comparison to the Android devices, the display is different and the former would obviously give the user more control over their interface but for those who want more control over their hardware's, Windows Phone has certainly a long way to go.

Operating system and UI

Nokia Lumia 820 has a 4.3 inch screen that is powered by the AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, that gives 16 million colors along with a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels and works at a pixel density of 217ppi. The screen can be interacted with through the multitouch technology and is backed by the Nokia Clear Black display technology.

Other Features

Nokia Lumia 820 offers a music player and a video player where the former is compatible with the formats MP3, WAV, eAAC+ and WMA player while the latter supports MP4, H.264, H.263 and WMV player. The music can be heard through the loudspeakers or through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5mm jack. The earphone is powered by the Dolby Headphone sound enhancement technology.

Camera

Nokia Lumia 820 has an 8 megapixel camera that allows the user to click pictures at a resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels and features the facilities of Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, dual-LED flash, Geo-tagging and touch focus. There is also the facility of video recording that has the video stabilization facility to back it up. The user can also make web calls with the help of a secondary VGA camera.

Connectivity

Nokia Lumia 820 has a plethora of Internet capabilities including Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band and Wi-Fi Direct that makes sure that the user can connect with the web and download videos, games, images and songs. The user can also visit the desired web sites including Facebook and Twitter.

Memory

Nokia Lumia 820 has a internal memory of 8GB, which should be enough for most, but in case it is not, the user can make the device flexible with the use of a microSD card slot that implies  a memory expansion up to a massive 64GB. In addition there is also a 7GB skydrop storage facility, which means that loads of data can bestored without the memory space running out. The 1GB of RAM allows the user to access the resources of the system at a faster pace.

Other Features

Nokia Lumia 820 has lots of games and apps which keeps the user entertained and engaged. As compared to the games featured by Android devices, the device does seem weak. Still more games and apps can be downloaded from the web as and when required by the user.

Battery

Nokia Lumia 820 is powered by a standard lithium ion battery of 1650 mAh power that shields out a standby time of up to 330 hours (2G) and up to 330 hours (3G). The battery further gives a talk time of up to 14 hours (2G) and up to 8 hours (3G) and can play music for up to 55 continuous hours.

Connectivity

Nokia Lumia 820 has loads of data connectivity features including the bluetooth facility that allows the user to exchange data wirelessly with other devices. Other features include USB port, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, GPRS , EDGE and NFC capability.

Other Features

Nokia Lumia 820 when compared to Samsung Galaxy SII has a faster processor whereas the latter is lighter in weight. Samsung Galaxy SII has more storage capacity  and also provides the Radio FM facility, which Nokia Lumia 820 does not. Samsung Galaxy SII has a better battery life with 1100 minutes of talk time as compared to 840 minutes offered by Nokia Lumia 820. Another department where Samsung Galaxy S II edges out Nokia Lumia 820 is with Wi-Fi tethering, which the latter does not provide.

Other Features

Nokia Lumia 820 will be receiving new performance enhancements updates from Nokia along with some other Lumia series devices. The track record for the device has not been great but the company will be hoping to grab a few more customers with the updates they are rolling out.

Other Features

6 August 2013: Online leaks of Nokia Amber, a latest update for Nokia Lumia 820, is available over-the-air (OTA). According to the sources, plans are there to release the software suite improvements for Windows Phone 8 handsets somewhere in this month by the Finns. The proud owners of Nokia Lumia 820 can try their hands over the Nokia Amber Update online right away. As being an unofficial update, it is said that the images of the leaked update says that it will delete all data stored on your phone. Hence, it is recommended to get a full backup done before proceeding further.
