Nokia Lumia 925 White - Expert Reviews

Continuing with the fever of 'Lumia' series, the Finnish brand phone manufacturer Nokia has recently launched the much awaited Nokia Lumia 925 in consonance with its tie up with Microsoft to manufacture a series of top-end 'WinPhos' or Windows Phones. The Nokia Lumia 925 is the latest species in the Lumia ecosystem that combines the best of its predecessors that is, bigger screen of Lumia 900, the software updates and improved camera of 920.  The Nokia Lumia 925 is powered by a Qualcomm dual core 1.5GHz MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor that is supported by 1GB of RAM to give its users a swift performance and a drifting control over games and applications. The Nokia Lumia 925 runs on the latest version of Windows Phone 8, which is a bit against speculations, since, recently Microsoft announced that it would launch a new version - The Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1. The improvements in terms of software and applications are minor over its predecessor Nokia Lumia 920.

The Nokia Lumia 925 features a stately 4.5inches capacitive multi-touch 334 PPI ‘PURE MOTION HD+’ AMOLED screen with a super-sensitive touch-screen.  In terms of ocular capabilities, the Lumia 925 features a good 8megapixel PureView camera with dual-LED flash. A single SIM smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 925 features many productivity and application improvements. It has a spacious 16GB memory support that disappointingly is non-extendible. In terms of data connectivity, it offers 3G smartphone with a lots of other data connectivity features such as Class B GPRS, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC, dual-band, DLNA and Wi-Fi Hotspot. Over that, Lumia 925 is rolled out with Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP data connectivity, and for PC data connectivity, it includes microUSB version 2.0. It supports A-GPS geo-navigation that is aided by GLONASS and Nokia's Geo-App ‘HERE’ is included for that purpose. Made sleek with just 8.5mm of width, the Nokia Lumia 925 is seal packed from back, and hence battery is non-removable. It sports a better placed 2000 mAh Li-Ion battery which claims to give a talk time of 18.5hours when functional on a 2G Network and a talk time of 12hours and 40minutes when functional on a 3G network. Lumia 925 offers a standby time of up to 440hours.

Operating system and UI

With the new Nokia Lumia 925, it seems like Nokia has perfected many features that were mostly experimental in the earlier shades of Lumia series. The follow up to Nokia Lumia 920, the Nokia Lumia 925 looks definitely promising in terms of build-quality and functionality. Compared to Nokia Lumia 920, which sported a plastic chassis with high gloss finish, the Lumia 925 has a silver metal frame that gently and graciously accommodates the curves that it has. Following the standard design semantics, the Nokia Lumia 925 has a flat build with a screen in the front and a colored plastic panel at the rear. With all of it, Lumia 925 has definitely shed a lot of weight, weighing just 139grams over its predecessor - Nokia Lumia 920's 185 grams. Though the uneven gaps over its edge circumference often sour the looks, it is still a robust and tough shell with a splash of vibrant gloss. The back-cover is sealed, because of which, users will not be able to load a replacement battery and there is no microSD card slot for expanding the storage capability. Lumia 925 is only available in standard White, Black and Grey, the signature Blue and Pink colors of Nokia Windows’s phone are not provided this time over. The device is built into a stylish aluminum design that holds its 4.5-inch AMOLED display, PureView camera, and usual attendants - the buttons and jacks. The body is built into a well-endowed and seductively curvaceous looks.

The Gorilla Glass 2 protection screen protects the 4.5inches large screen of the device, and the body is wrapped around in single piece polycarbonate on the backside, and at the edges with an aluminum band with a sniper like silicon look. With skinny and curvy dimensions of 129 x 70.6 x 8.5mm, the Nokia Lumia 925, like its predecessor, does not take inspiration from a brick, and weighs just 139 light grams. With non-removable back-cover, you get only two options in terms of external storage capacity - 16GB or 32GB ( 32GB is exclusive for Vodafone customers). There is a volume rocker placed at the upper right edge juxtaposed to the two-stage camera button, and power button down the right hand side.

The microUSB charging port, micro-SIM insertion tray and headphone jack are along the top. The left and bottom of the phone do not have any accommodating ports / injunctions so that to augment easy gripping. Unlike Nokia Lumia 920 which had an option of wireless charging and hence, a consequent heavy body and machinery, Nokia Lumia 925 does not have any such feature and thus, a clean and slimmer non-Unibody monochrome device. It must be noted that crucial features like camera quality, snapper width and angle coverage, battery life among others, are not compromised in doing so. The build quality of Nokia Lumia 925 is excellent giving you a great in-hand comfort. The camera lens caveat is a bit large and sticks out slightly from Lumia 925's back. The camera does not poke out even when it is a centerpiece of its polycarbonate back. There is typical LED flash and the loudspeaker has been placed close to the bottom of the rear, just beneath the connector ports for optional wireless charging shells. The position of the speakers defies ergonomics and do not offer a good music quality. Unlike the Lumia 920's IPS LCD display, Nokia Lumia 925 is featured with an AMOLED panel that has helped it to shed some weight. The 4.5-inch screen is ‘PureMotion HD+’, which means it has the built in capacity to reduce latent period or latency on animations. The navigation on Windows Phone UI is fast and responsive.

The screen displays accurate color rendering. Nokia has included a color profile app where you can change the display setting according to your own preferences. Besides all this, there is a new antenna system arrayed into the phone along with an aluminum frame. There is the primary antenna at the bottom side and two antennas placed at top edge to maximize the use of radio spectrum - GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900), WCDMA (850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100) or LTE (Bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 20). The mic is placed at the bottom of display to enable hands-free communication to work well.

Other Features

The Nokia Lumia 925 combines the best piece of hardware and software, and with its established ecosystem, the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 offers you a great lot of multimedia and productivity features backed up by the powerful hardware of Lumia 925. Also, navigating the Windows Phone UI is flair, as it always was. A lot of services and applications are included in the device by default, among them, the most famous and curious ones are the Music and Mapping applications. The maps are provided by Nokia's HERE map service that is Nokia’s version of Google Maps but does not have as extensive a database as Google, for obvious reasons. However, the augmented reality interface of maps is a delight for the users, and the Glance feature is unique along with a double-tap-to-wake-up option.

The City Lens application lets you overlay the real world with information, and besides that, the Nokia Music service is also excellent, for it is a streaming radio service through which Nokia has apparently tried to compete with the pan-US exclusive service of Pandor or Apple's upcoming iRadio. Under it, the users can choose a mixed version based on a particular genre or a song, to stream or download the file for offline playing. Being a free service without any ads, the only limitation imposed is that you can only skip six songs per hour. The HD audio feature adds to the quality, with two-microphone uplink noise cancellation. Taking its cue from Windows, the Lumia 925 includes following Speech codecs such as AMR-WB, GSM FR, AMR-NB, GSM HR, EFR, and GSM EFR, which boils down to the popular Windows Voice Recognition support. The audio formats that are supported by the device are ASF, MP4, AAC, AMR, MP3, M4A, WMA, 3GP, 3G2 that is quite comprehensive in itself. The rear camera has a display resolution of 1080p (Full HD, 1920 x 1080) with a good frame rate of 30fps. The video playback formats supported are MP4, WMV, AVI, 3GP, 3G2, M4V, and MOV.

Nokia Lumia 925's strong hardware base with 1GB of RAM lets you play a number of processing and graphically demanding games such as Drag Racing. The Lumia 925, running on Windows Phone 8 has an inbuilt support for popular graphics and game rendering platform of Windows such as DirectX 11, Touch UI, and X-Box Live Hub. Some of the popular services and features are still not available because no Windows Phone version of them is available. Over all this, 7 GB of In-built Skydrive Cloud storage is provided to its users. The Orientation Sensor lets you manage aspect screen ration as you tilt the phone body and in terms of security and theft-protection, the Nokia Lumia 925 includes Enterprise Security features with its Remote security policy enforcement system. Under it, you can remotely lock your device via internet. There is also the Track and protect via Internet feature, which lets you to do what the name suggests. Apart from that, features like  Firmware update, Remote wipe of user data via Internet, Device lock, Device pass code, PIN code, Firmware and OS integrity check, Secure device start-up, Application sandboxing and integrity check are also included to make it a very secure machine.

Featuring with Lumia 925 is a 4.5-inch AMOLED WXGA screen with an excellent display resolution of 1280 x 7x8 pixels that is in contrast to Nokia Lumia 920's IPS LCD screen. One very interesting tweak done by Nokia includes 'overdriving' the screen by increasing the voltage and to flick through Window Phone 8's ultra-fast apps to remove the accompanying problems of OLED screen, which includes image ghosting when displaying fast moving images. The Lumia 925 has a PenTile screen, this refers to the pattern of red, blue and green dots that make up each screen pixel wherein, the images produced are very clean and without any noise. The touch screen can also be used with gloves and keys. The included optical stabiliser helps to capture with a flair 1080p video with all details that can be accommodated. The video streaming is perfectly well when tested, and even the most demanding games drifted smoothly when tested.Coming to its optical capabilities, the device includes a rear 8MP Carl Zeiss optical camera which gives you an astounding resolution of 3264 x 2448pixels. The camera is featured with auto-focus and dual-LED flash support to make night photography an easy and less technologically driven task. The wide aperture means more light makes it through to the sensor, and the image stabilisation helps you take longer exposures. The image stabilisation technique employed by Nokia in Lumia 925 lets you record videos and take photographs without the usual jerks and vertical or horizontal rashes.  Alongside the noise-compression algorithms and software-based tweaks, Nokia's added a sixth glass element to the five-lens Carl Zeiss setup, as seen on the rest of the Lumia 920 series. All this makes it one of the best camera smartphones out there. In addition to that, Lumia 925 features a secondary 1.3MP front camera that gives you a resolution of1280 x 960pixels at the recording rate of 30fps, which makes it a very suitable for video calls and as a snapper.Nokia has bundled the Lumia 925 with its new Smart Cam software that can take 10 pictures simultaneously in burst mode, allowing you to edit them later. It can also track objects across the scene while recording or taking a snap to edit it out completely or to turn a moving object into an action sequence timeline based photograph. Apart from that, the Camera tool called as 'Lenses' lets you adjust the glare and other settings to mop up the best shooting experience according to your likes/dislikes.

The 8.7MP rear camera is also featured with the Nokia's Motion Focus app, which is another new option that can detect moving objects, and blurs the surrounding area, so that you do not have to be a 'tweak-photography' expert. The blur effect can be in accordance to the user's choice. The Change Faces app allows you to take photos with the subject's eyes open and, you can edit the picture, person by person, in a group photograph selecting the best ones from 10 shots simultaneously captured. The Remove Moving Objects does what its name suggests - removing objects that spoil your photography and can come handy while removing those infamous photo-bombers. The Action Shot app lets you take a set of static unmoved shots and later edit them. The Smart Cam app is reportedly buggy. In addition to that, the Nokia's PhotoBeamer application is an innovative way to show your pictures on any screen. Point your Nokia Lumia at any screen and enjoy your photos anywhere with family and friends, a sort of mobile projector that is always at hand. The Cinemagraph app is a blend of photos and movies like the animation creating picture that appear hollywoodisque and alive.

A new ‘Glance’ option is also featured for the first time with Lumia 925 display, it enables a clock on the standby screen and the AMOLED display lights up, and uses the pixels for the white parts of the clock minimally, and provides quickly glance-able information including battery charge state and silent mode. Nokia has included its ‘floating lens technology’ where the camera is built on springs that absorb and lessen any movements you make while you're shooting video or photographing, and reduces the shake effect by keeping the shutter open for longer time to capture more light and produce bright pictures. Other features to aid in its optical capability are also included such as the touch focus, Landscape orientation, Exposure compensation, Auto and manual exposure, Auto and manual white balance. Also, Still image editor, Face recognition, Full screen viewfinder, Geotagging, Optical image stabilization, True 16:9 sensor,  Backside-illuminated image sensor, Automatic photo upload to web services, Full resolution photo and video upload, Creative Studio, and 6-lens optics.

Nokia Lumia 925 is a 3G supporting smartphone (HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 - RM-892, RM-893, HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - RM-910) apart from 4G LTE support (LTE 800 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 - RM-892, LTE 700 / 1700 / 2100 - RM-893). It also supports 2G (GSM/WCDMA) network over GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 wide bands, with GSM maximum download speed of 236.8kbps. The LTE supports download speeds of 100Mbps (maximum) and maximum WCDMA download speed of 42.2Mbps. The standard java support is included, fully functional with browsers (Internet Explorer 10) and download managers. There is also a 7GB free SkyDrive storage given to its users that features inbuilt E-Mail clients like Yahoo! Mail, Outlook Mobile, Gmail, Office 365, Nokia Mail, Windows Live / Hotmail /, MS Exchange Active Sync. Apart from that, standard productivity applications like instant messaging services like Google Talk, Twitter, Windows Live Messenger, WhatsApp, Yahoo! Messenger, Skype IM, and Facebook are also pre-included.  It also gives you facility for the conversational view of E-Mail and in addition to that, lets you link multiple inboxes into one. Photo sharing can be done with tap-and-share feature, and for location sharing, it includes WP location sharing and Foursquare apps. For geo-navigation, Nokia's proprietary ‘Here Maps’ are included and in terms of video-call facility, it includes the Microsoft owned Skype video call platform.

Nokia Lumia 925 includes two non-replaceable and non-swappable external memory options - 16GB and 32GB of which, 32GB option is featured only for the Vodafone users. The Lumia 925 is equipped with 1GB RAM of internal memory.

Other Features

In terms of applications and gaming capabilities, it pokes where it hurts the most - The Non-compatibility issue. One of the main reasons that people are reluctant to switch over to Nokia Windows Phone, are borne out of the fear of non-support of Android and/or Apple application ecosystem. The standard Google and Microsoft services are present but the larger benefits are still not there - For instance, the updated app version of Dropbox and Instagram are missing. Some of the app builders like Spotify have debuted into the Windows ecosystem as well.

Due to the patent-warring and cutthroat competition, the consumer is at a loss. To compete with Google Maps, Nokia has included ‘Here maps’ in Nokia Lumia 925 providing local information about nearby businesses and places of interests, the augmented reality is a new and unique feature of it. Also included are the Nokia Music and Nokia Mix applications for music and FM Radio streaming services. Some apps from the failed Meego platform of Nokia are making appearance in Windows too. The People and Me hubs let you link to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn account of yours. The app store is far behind in competition when it comes to the big names. The app stores now features almost a whopping 140,000 apps in total, including famous services like - Netflix and Spotify. Still, popular applications like Instagram, Snapseed, and Dropbox are missing, along with games like Real Racing 3.

Business applications such as Adobe acrobat reader, Lync (Corporate IM), SkyDrive storage for documents and notes, Company Hub for enterprise applications, and Office apps such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote are also pre-included. In terms of gaming, games like Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds offer an enjoying experience to the users, and with its 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor and powerful 1GB RAM, even demanding games like Real Racing 3 can be played with flair. Video streaming over internet is easy and perfect over applications like Netflix and BBC's iPlayer.

Nokia Lumia 925 includes a non-removable 2,000mAh battery, which has a reasonable capacity and is functional over a usual smartphone battery life. Over WP Bench — a popular benchmarking tool — the Lumia 925 achieved 2hours and 59minutes during a battery test that is designed to drain it as quickly as possible using CPU cycles. Also, features like Optional Wireless Charging can be opted for, if demanded by the user.

Nokia Lumia 925 offers many data connectivity options apart from the more popular ones such as 3G, GPS, and NFC. The 4G mobile data internet facility is included, which makes it a popular choice even with the other upcoming high-end smartphones and network options. Besides that, other connectivity features such as Bluetooth v3.0, which features Object Push profile (OPP) 1.1, Hands-free profile (HFP) 1.5, Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) 1.2, Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.4, Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) 1.1, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC transactional capability are also included. The Wi-Fin channel bonding is a new feature that is included. Nokia Lumia 925 offers only a micro-SIM support and features the old USB 2.0 PC data connectivity feature.

Other Features

The Nokia Lumia 925 can be aptly described as one of the best Windows phones available over the counter. But, its popular rivals that include - iPhone 5 or Galaxy S4 offer more densely app-populated platforms. Nokia Lumia 925 also boasts to compete with Sony Xperia Z, such that, being built on the Microsoft platform, Lumia 925 can offer the business and compatibility freaks a better choice to bet on as the Cloud Storage service will be available in the near future. In addition to that, as more and more app-builders are diverting portfolios to include Microsoft Windows 8, also as the platform in the offer for their applications, we can expect Windows phones to surge higher and compete with its main rivals easily. For now, the battle is half-won.

First metal Lumia gets it right

Of the three phones in Nokia's US Lumia 920 lineup -- the Nokia Lumia 925, 920, and 928 -- T-Mobile's and ATT's 925 has the best hardware design, hands down. (And yes, the Lumia 1020's 41-megapixel camera tops them all.)Slimmer than the rest, the 925 also made with premium aluminum elements and has a tight fit and finish that approaches the pristine finesse of HTC's One. Nokia pumps up the buttoned-up feel by backing off the Lumia's screaming colors and muting the palette to white, black, and gr Read full Review

Nokia Lumia 925 review

The Nokia Lumia 925 is a new flagship model from the Finnish company bringing a selection of updates, mostly in design, to the company's Lumia 920 that's only about 6-months old. It lands with rumours swirling about yet another high-end handset on the horizon, the so-called Nokia EOS, slated to launch in July. That puts the Lumia 925 in something of an awkward position. Those who went for the Lumia 920 now potentially find themselves on a contract with a handset that's just been bettered. Those w Read full Review
