Nokia X Black - Expert Reviews

Nokia, the Finnish multinational company, has earned great appreciation for its Windows phones, however, in view of the popularity of the Android fare, it has rolled out the first smartphone series with a customized derivative of Android OS, that is, Nokia X platform. This combination of Nokia and Android operating system is sure to grab the attention of millions of people worldwide. Scroll down to know the details of Nokia X, launched at the MWC 2014.

The overall body is quite average in weight and does not make you feel any extra burden while working on it. And it is so designed that it gives a concrete feel when held in hand. The on-screen view is quite bright and clear with an optimum screen size to provide a strain-free reading, playing and watching time. The alerts can be notified either via the vibration mode or by using MP3 or WAV ringtones. To enhance your audio experience with this handset, the company provides it with both, a built-in loudspeaker and an audio jack, so that you enjoy the full flexibility to enjoy the music.

The RAM figure may disappoint you a little, but Nokia X is provided with a good amount of internal storage so that, you can store a huge amount of files and data. Along with this, it is also equipped with a microSD card slot to expand the device's external memory as and when needed. With Nokia X, you need not worry about staying connected to you social network for it offers almost all the local and global connectivity features. If you are an amateur photographer, its primary camera will serve you really well. Unfortunately, the company has not provided it with a secondary camera. Working on one of the most advanced operating systems, Nokia X offers rather a stout and powerful battery, so that you have your favourite phone run throughout the day.

Operating system and UI

The dimensions of 115.5mm x 63mm x 10.4mm and a weight of 128.7 grams clearly suggest that Nokia X has an average weight that won’t burden your wrists and fingers, even if you work on it for long continuous hours. The company has provided it with a 4 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with a screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of ~233ppi (pixels per inch). The on-screen view is always bright and clear and the screen size is just perfect to make your reading, playing or watching time, strain-free. Certainly, you will see a major change in the user interface as Nokia is hosting the Android operating system for the very first time.

Other Features

There is no doubt about Nokia not compromising with the multimedia section even a bit, and with no doubts we can say that its built-in music and video player will offer excellent playback time. The music player supports almost all the formats like MP3, AMR-NB, FLAC, MIDI etc., and the video player supports formats like MP4, VC1, DivX, WMV9 and HD. The company, certainly provides Nokia X with an inbuilt loudspeaker along with a 3.5mm audio jack, to plug in your earphones in order to enjoy your music and videos the way you want. Along with all these, it also offers a stereo FM radio, so that you don’t miss your favourite music numbers on the local radio stations.

Nokia X is equipped with a 3MP camera that features a camera resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. Some basic camera features present are fixed focus, 4 x camera digital zoom, 1/5-inch sensor size, f/2.8 as main camera f-number/aperture, 32.4mm camera focal length, auto and manual white balance, active toolbar, still image editor, face recognition, auto exposure, center weighted auto exposure and panorama lens as digital add ons. Unfortunately, the company does not provide it with a secondary camera, so video calling won’t be possible with it.

Nokia X supports all those features that can keep you connected to your network globally. Some of the features are GPRS, EDGE, 3G, 2G and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n. Also, the device can act as Wi-Fi hotspot by which, you can share your network with all other Wi-Fi enabled devices.

Nokia X has been shipped with with 512MB of RAM, which means, you can’t go for high-end games and heavy multi-tasking. However, it hosts 4GB of internal space so that you can store a significant amount of files and data in it. If somehow, this space gets exhausted, you need not worry as Nokia X is provided with a microSD card slot, which can be used to expand the external memory up to 32GB as and when needed.

Other Features

Nokia X hosts a huge collection of pre–installed applications. Some of these are Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, threaded view of text messages, MMS, Email, IM, Push Email, HTML enabled browser, AGPS support, Java MIDP emulator, SNS integration, MP4/H.263/H.264 player, MP3/eAAC+/WAV/Flac player, Document viewer, Photo viewer/editor, Google Search, 3D HereMaps, Gmail, YouTube, Picasa, Voice memo/dial and Predictive text input, etc. All the famous Android games and apps can be downloaded on Nokia X smartphone, like Plants vs Zombies 2, Skype, etc. and adding more to it is the customizable homescreen and Fastlane.

Working on Nokia X software that is a customized derivative of Android OS, Nokia X hosts Qualcomm MSM8225 Snapdragon S4 dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A5 processor and a 1,500mAh battery, which promises to provide a standby time up to 408 hours, a talk time up to 13 hours and 20 minutes (2G) and up to 10 hours and 30 minutes (3G), a music playback time up to 26 hours and a video playback time of up to 8.4 hours.

Nokia X hosts many connectivity features that allow you to stay connected to your network all the time. The global connectivity features includes GPRS, GSM, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot, 3G and 2G, whereas local connectivity features include Bluetooth and USB v2.0.

Other Features

One of the major rivals of Nokia X is Samsung Galaxy Trend II Duos wherein, the former offers an IPS screen while the latter does not. Not only this, the former set is 0.70mm thinner than the latter one.  Along with this, Nokia X also rivals Micromax Bolt A24 where again, Nokia X offers a 3MP camera as opposed to the latter's 0.3MP. Talking of the operating system, Nokia X is features the most updated version of Android, so in that case, it is above many models that were released in the past.

Other Features

10th March, 2014: With an affordable price, Nokia X finally stepped in the Indian market. The company is offering MixRadio and 10GB of Onedrive space free of cost for the lifetime. This isn't the Nokia Android phone you were looking for

Rumors of Nokia making an Android smartphone had been churning for a long time. Finally, at Mobile World Congress in March, the Finnish company unveiled a new range of phones, the X, X+ and XL, aimed at those who can't afford hundreds of dollars or pounds on a new mobile. Running on a forked version of Android, the X range of devices lack Google Play services, which Nokia has ignored, choosing to feature Microsoft's products instead. While this seems like a good idea on paper, Android doesn't re Read full Review

Nokia X review: What happens when Nokia makes an Android phone?

For a company now under Microsoft's rule, Nokia has serious grit. The phone maker announced an Android phone called the X just two months before completing its merger with Microsoft. Even more intriguing is the fact that this is no run-of-the-mill Android device: The X comes with a Windows Phone-like launcher, offers Microsoft services and will be sold for around $120 in developing markets. While it may not be a powerful smartphone, it has many unique qualities that help it stand out from the lo Read full Review
