Nokia X (Normandy) 4GB 512MB GREEN - Expert Reviews

Introduction

Nokia, the multinational giant that had made pioneering efforts in bringing the mobile phone within the reach of the lowest strata of our society, has fallen on 'not so good times' due to its misplaced hopes on the Windows mobile OS platform. The fall of this company has been due to its intransigent attitude of sticking to the Windows OS despite the sway of Android in the mobile world. According to a report, Windows OS accounts for only three percent of the mobile market as compared to three fourth of the market share of Android OS. However, there is hope yet for Nokia, for it has launched three smartphones based on the Android OS at the ongoing MWC 2014. This decision is all the more significant because only recently, Nokia has been taken over by Microsoft - the maker of Windows mobile OS.

All the three smartphones run on a highly modified UI that does not include many of the Google products. Nokia has used the Android open source project just like Amazon with its kindle Fire device. Of the three smartphones released, Nokia X, Nokia X Plus and Nokia XL, Nokia X Plus comes with dimensions of 115.5mm x 63mm x 10.4mm and a weight of 128.7 grams. It sports a 4-inch WVGA IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display. The device runs on the new Nokia X software platform (a derivative of the Android platform) and boasts of a 3MP camera. This new baby from Nokia is run by a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor coupled with 768MB of RAM. In the memory segment, Nokia X Plus houses 4GB of inbuilt memory and a microSD card slot that allows you to add up to 32GB of external memory to this device.

This new offering from Nokia, Nokia X Plus contains a wide range of connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB port beside 2G and 3G. In addition to all these, it also comes with several interesting security features like Enterprise security features: Mobile VPN, Data encryption for device and Remote wipe. Accessing the Internet on this device is very smooth due to the presence of HTML browser, which allows you to open full web pages in a jiffy. The experience is further enhanced by the presence of several multimedia functionalities that include music, video and games. To power this device, Nokia has packed a 1500mAH battery to provide the user with adequate back during normal usage.

Operating system and UI

Nokia X Plus sports a 4-inch WVGA capacitive two touch IPS LCD display that is capable of supporting 800 x 480 pixels resolution and 16M colors, which comes to around 233ppi of pixel density with a 15:9 aspect ratio that make the images on the screen, bright and sharp. In addition to these, it also comes with some additional features like brightness control, tactile feedback, orientation sensor, Nokia glance screen, wide viewing angle and screen double tap functionalities.

The device comes with a highly modified UI that does not have most of the Google's products. Nokia is using the Android open source project (version 4.1.2) and has named it as Nokia X software platform. To make the user experience smooth and highly useful, there are several sensors inbuilt in the smartphone like Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer and Proximity sensor.

Other Features

Nokia X Plus comes with a lot of multimedia features like Nokia MixRadio that gives the user features like playlists in music player, audio streaming, music player, audio equalizer, loudness, media player and album graphics display in the music player. The audio and video players support a wide range of audio as well as video formats like:

Audio Format: MP3, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, FLAC, MIDI,MP4 and AAC

Video Format:  H.263, H.264, AVC, MPEG-4, 3GP, MP4 and H.263

Nokia has also provided a stereo FM radio with the device that allows you to listen to your favorite RJs, as they belt out your favourite numbers on their channels.

Camera

Nokia X Plus boasts of a fixed lens 3MP camera with 4X zoom. The camera has 1/5- inch sensor, f/2 aperture, and a 32.4mm focal length. Sadly, there is no flash provided with this camera. The device does not possess any secondary front camera. The images taken with this smartphone are in JPEG format and can click pictures up to a camera resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. Also, the camera can capture FWVGA pictures at 30fps at 864 x 480 pixels resolution.

The camera also provides several useful features to the shooter, so that he/she is not only able to take the best shot with this device, but also edit it as per his/her taste, these include,  Auto and manual white balance (Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Daylight, Automatic), Active toolbar, Still image editor, Face recognition, Auto exposure and Center weighted auto exposure (ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400). You can also take your picture in different colour modes like Sepia, Solarize, Normal and Negative.

Connectivity

Nokia X Plus has a very capable HTML and Opera browser pre-installed in it that allow access to the Internet through Wi-Fi, 2G and 3G networks. Thanks to these features, opening a full webpage on this device is not an issue. The browsing speed too is very fast.

Memory

Nokia X Plus comes out of the box with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of inbuilt memory, but if you find it inadequate to your needs, do not worry, as the company has provided a microSD card slot that allows you to add a further 32GB of external memory to the device.

Other Features

Nokia X Plus is a very capable device that comes with several pre-installed applications like Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Viber, Skype, Calculator, Clock and Calendar with location support, Fixed dialing number, Alarm clock with ring tones and Phonebook. The user of this device can play games like Plant vs Zombies and Angry Birds to pass their leisure time.

Battery

Nokia X Plus boasts of an 1500mAh ( BN-01) 3.7 V removable battery that gives the user 13.3 hours of time in 2G network, 10.5 hours of talk time in 3G network and a standby time with dual SIM for 17 days. For music and video playback, the battery provide 26 hours and 8.4 hours of battery backup respectively. On the other hand, if you want to access the Internet, then the same battery will provide you 4.5 hours in cellular network and 4.7 hours in Wi-Fi network.

Connectivity

Nokia X Plus comes with a lot of connectivity options like AGPS/GPS, WCDMA network (900MHz, 2100MHz), GSM network (850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz), Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0+HS, microUSB port 2.0 for data exchange and 3.5mm audio jack to connect the earphones.

Other Features

There are many phones competing for the market segment that Nokia is hoping to target with one of them being Micromax Bolt A58. While Nokia X Plus comes with 4-inch WVGA IPS display that is capable of supporting 800 x 480 pixels resolution, Micromax Bolt A58 sports a 3.5-inch HVGA display that is capable of supporting 320 x 480 pixels resolution. The new member to the Nokia family boasts of a 3MP camera, whereas it's rival has a 2MP camera.

Also, Micromax Bolt A58 runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS, whereas Nokia X Plus runs on the customized version of Android's open source software. Nokia is much better than its rival in terms of its battery strength and RAM capacity, for it comes with 1500mAH battery and 768MB of RAM as opposed to the 1200mAH battery and 512MB RAM of Micromax Bolt A58.
