Nokia XL Cyan - Expert Reviews

After all these years of reluctance and refrain from using Android as a software platform, the Finnish firm has finally caved in with Nokia coming out with, not one but three Android based smartphones. Although the presence of Android does not guarantee success but we have a feeling that the combination of Nokia and Android should auger well with the consumers. Nokia has always been a sturdy and reliable gadget but lacked the dynamic nature of Android. Now, with both these platforms coming together in the form of Nokia X series, Nokia XL presents itself as a significant player. It comes with a 5 inches WVGA display with 800 by 480 pixels resolution and 16 million color depth. The pixel density is low with 187ppi but the IPS LCD display has backup features like brightness control, tactile feedback, orientation sensor, Nokia glance screen, wide viewing angle and screen double tap.

The display of Nokia XL can be interacted through the touchscreen facility, while few hardware keys are present too on the outer portion such as volume key, back key and lock key. Thanks to the dual SIM facility, two micro SIM cards can be inserted into the device. Nokia has chosen a customised version of Android OS named Nokia X software platform along with a 1.2GHz dual core processor. The presence of 768MB RAM seems a tad below of what we would have liked. The internal memory is of 4GB while the microSD card slot of 32GB makes the memory department, a decent bargain. The device has a length of141.4mm, breadth of 77.7mm and thickness of 10.9mm with a weight of 190 grams. Nokia XL provides a web surfing speed of up to 85.6Kbps with GPRS and up to 236.8Kbps with EDGE features.

The user can download data at a rather low speed of up to 7.2Mbps and upload data with a speed of up to 5.76Mbps. HTML5 browser and Wi-Fi are the traditional means to access web, while Wi-Fi hot spot allows the user to access Internet with other gadgets. Bluetooth and USB port do make up for the lack of NFC, although the latter, is faster in speed when it comes to data exchange. Nokia XL is available in five colours like Bright Green, Orange, Cyan, Yellow, Black and White. Nokia never goes wrong when it comes to the battery department and here too, the 2000mAh battery has winning numbers to act as proof with a talk time of up to 16 hours in 3G and up to 13 hours in 2G. Music can be enjoyed too for up to 37 hours without any interruption. The standby time offered is up to a massive 720 hours.

The camera department is not as impressive as Nokia XL sports a 5 megapixels primary camera and a 2 megapixels secondary camera. The resolution differs accordingly for both the cameras with 2592 by 1944 pixels for the former and 1600 by 1200 pixels for the latter. The LED flash feature forms a part of the primary camera along with panorama and face detection facilities.

Operating system and UI

Nokia XL has a 5 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 187ppi pixel density and 480 by 800 pixels resolution. Ambient light sensor, accelerometer sensor and proximity sensors are used in addition to orientation sensor and tactile feedback technology.

Other Features

A stereo FM radio for enjoying popular radio stations and a music player for listening to popular songs form part of the entertainment department. The music player is compatible with the formats of MP3, WAV, eAAC+ and FLAC, and the video player is supported by the formats of MP4, H.264 and H.263.

Nokia XL has a 5 megapixels primary camera at the rear end to click pictures at a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels. LED flash and auto focus emulate as tools for proving brightness and accuracy while snapping images. The shutter has a 1/4-inch sensor size and features face detection and panorama facilities. Video recordings can be made at 480 pixels. The secondary camera of 2 megapixels can be used to click selfies and conduct video calls over the web.

The downloading speed of Nokia XL is not that quick at 7.2Mbps, whereas a standard uploading speed is offered for up to 5.76Mbps. GPRS and EDGE deliver surfing speeds of up to 85.6Kbps and 236.8Kbps respectively. Wi-Fi hot spot and Wi-Fi are given for web access and related activities.

Nokia XL has an above average RAM of 768MB, a bit more than that would have been really good for the speed of the device. A microSD card slot of 32GB can be utilized should the 4GB internal memory empties out.

Other Features

Nokia XL would be able to support all the Android based games and applications, quite uncanny for a Nokia device. Games and apps like Angry Gorilla, Virtual Tennis and Viber are present too.

Nokia XL comes out with flying colors in its battery department with a 2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery that generates a talk time of up to 16 hours in 2G and up to 13 hours in 3G. The standby time provided is up to 720 hours whereas the music play time is up to 720 hours.

Nokia XL provides Bluetooth 3.0 and not the latest version of 4.0 for data exchange activity, while microUSB port 2.0 remains another tool to transmit data from one device to another via USB cable. GPRS, EDGE and Wi-Fi along with HTML5 browser and Wi-Fi hot spot, are part of the connectivity department as well. The two frequency bandwidths of 3G SIM are 900 and 2100MHz while for 2G SIM, the device is supported by frequency bandwidths of 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz.

Other Features

Nokia XL, when compared to Sony Xperia C, has a similar display size of 5 inches, but the display quality is much sharper with the latter as it offers a pixel density of 220ppi as compared to 187ppi for the former. Both the devices have dual SIM facility and provide 4GB of internal memory and a 32GB microSD card slot. Nokia XL has 768MB of RAM while Sony Xperia C comes with 1GB of RAM. Nokia XL runs on 1GHz dual core processor as opposed to the 1.2GHz quad core processor of Sony Xperia C.

Sony Xperia runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system while Nokia XL runs on Nokia X software platform, a customised version of Android OS. Nokia XL has a 5 megapixels primary camera - weaker than the 8 megapixels primary camera of Sony Xperia C. The secondary camera however, is stronger with Nokia X flaunting 2 megapixels as opposed to the 0.3 megapixels of Sony Xperia C.

Other Features

19th May, 2014: Nokia has finally launched its Android OS based smartphone, Nokia XL, in the Indian market at a price point of Rs. 11,489. This isn't the Nokia Android phone you were looking for

Rumors of Nokia making an Android smartphone had been churning for a long time. Finally, at Mobile World Congress in March, the Finnish company unveiled a new range of phones, the X, X+ and XL, aimed at those who can't afford hundreds of dollars or pounds on a new mobile. Running on a forked version of Android, the X range of devices lack Google Play services, which Nokia has ignored, choosing to feature Microsoft's products instead. While this seems like a good idea on paper, Android doesn't re Read full Review

Nokia X review: What happens when Nokia makes an Android phone?

For a company now under Microsoft's rule, Nokia has serious grit. The phone maker announced an Android phone called the X just two months before completing its merger with Microsoft. Even more intriguing is the fact that this is no run-of-the-mill Android device: The X comes with a Windows Phone-like launcher, offers Microsoft services and will be sold for around $120 in developing markets. While it may not be a powerful smartphone, it has many unique qualities that help it stand out from the lo Read full Review
