Samsung Galaxy S5 4G - Expert Reviews
Samsung has updated its flagship Galaxy S5 with faster internet connectivity – 4G LTE. They have launched this updated version on July 21, 2014 in India, after successfully launching it in European and North American markets. The customers of this device will get special data packs from the company as Samsung has entered into a partnership with Airtel. The existing as well as new Airtel subscribers who buy this product will get two months free 4G data of 5GB. And if you think that the only change in the new updated device is the 4G LTE internet connectivity, you are wrong, for there are many internal changes at Samsung Galaxy S5 4G, other than the additional connectivity option. We have found that there have been upgrades on numerous fronts including processor, graphics, connectivity, other specs, and many more.
While the 4G LTE version comes with a quad-core processor (Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801) clocked at a speed of 2.5GHz, the earlier version came with octa-core processor (Exynos) clocked at a speed of 1.9GHz. This version comes with Adreno 330 graphics chip and has a Download Booster feature that enables faster download by leveraging both 4G and Wi-Fi connections. This handset also comes with Wi-Fi Multi-Input Multi-Output (MiMo) technology that increases the Wi-Fi speed by offering two internal Wi-Fi antennas. While the earlier version had just 2G, 3G, and Wi-Fi connectivity options, this version comes with an additional 4G antenna.
There are many other great features of Samsung Galaxy S5 4G. The first one is surely the display screen resolution. The 5.1 inches screen is a Super AMOLED full HD display that sports a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. You will not only get an improved user interface but also an improved menu. The primary camera at the rear end has a 16 megapixels sensor and the front faced secondary camera has a 2.1 megapixels sensor. A special feature known as ‘Selective Focus’ that blurs the background while focusing a specific area, forms a part of this device. Samsung Galaxy 4G, just like LG G3, comes in two versions on the basis of internal storage capacity. While one version has 16GB of ROM, the other has 32GB of the same. Users can easily expand the external storage capacity by using a microSD card by up to 128 GB.
This handset runs on the latest operating system – Android KitKat 4.4.2 and has a heart-rate monitor located below the camera module. The battery capacity of this mobile is of 2800mAh and provides a talk time of 21 hours and standby time of 390 hours. This device is water and dust proof. Samsung Galaxy S5 4G is available in India in different colors such as Copper Gold, Electric Blue, Shimmery White, and Charcoal Black. There are not many handsets in India that are 4G LTE compliant. Currently, Airtel services are available with this handset in eleven cities across India. If you want 4G LTE, which is not much prevalent in India yet, you have to shell out Rs. 16K more than the non-updated one.
Operating system and UI
The new and upgraded Samsung Galaxy S5 4G comes with new user interface features and is powered by one of the most powerful hardware and software features available. It comes with TouchWiz software, providing great experience to the users. This device runs on the latest Android version – Android KitKat 4.4.2 with the best user interface – latest version of TouchWiz. The hardware specifications of Galaxy S5 4G are equally strong, for it is powered by a 32-bit quad-core processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC) clocked at a speed of 2.5GHz and well supported by 2GB of RAM. Analysts say that this device comes with Adreno 330 GPU, which provides 50% better performance than that of Samsung Galaxy S4’s Adreno 320. Adreno 330 GPU supports most modern graphics APIs, DirectX, and OpenGL 3.0.
The new S5 4G supports FlexRender, which is an emerging distributed architecture standard that is used to display ray trace images (highly realistic). Samsung Galaxy S5 4G comes with a 5.1 inches display screen having 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution, which is around 50% more brighter at 450 nits than 300. In super-dark settings for stealth viewing, it can dim to around 2 nits. However, one of the most noteworthy points is the dropping of pixel density from 441ppi to 432ppi.

In the video section, users will get video stabilization, HDR, and UHD@30fps. The video formats to be accessed by the users will include WEBM, FLV, ASF, 3G2, M4V, MKV, AVI, MP4, 3GP, and WMV. One of the interesting aspects that we have found in Samsung Galaxy S5 4G is its on-camera photo editing capability and most importantly, improved picture-taking experience. User will find all the camera settings in a single panel and for feature positioning, they can be edited too.
One of the most interesting aspects here is that the camera is capable of operating in 6 MP, 8 MP, 9 MP, and 12MP modes having aspect ratios of 1:1, 4:3 and 16:9 respectively. The time lapse setting can help you in slow or fast motion photography. If you use 1/8th setting, you can also capture a hummingbird's flapping wings. A wide range of on-camera editing can be done on Samsung Galaxy S5 4G and some of them are rotating images, cropping, resizing, adjustment of important features (tone, saturation, brightness, contrast, hue, and individual levels on parts of images – blue, green, and red). You may not get the result like in Photoshop but will give you enough options to take enough control on image settings. Users can add vignette effects and many other effects. Moreover, they can add art aspects ranging from wacky to creative. Some of the visual effects that you can give are eraser mode, panning, drama shots, and best shot.

It not only comes with faster internet access options such as 4G LTE but also with 3G, 2G and Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac VHT80). In this section, we will try to check out the differences the device has with its earlier 3G-Wi-Fi model that was launched three months back. Many people think that the only new addition to this new model is 4G LTE. But that’s not true for there are many more differences as mentioned below.
Let’s start with the processor. The earlier version is powered by an octa-core processor (Exynos 5422) of Samsung. It has 4 high performance cores clocked at a speed of 1.9GHz and 4 low power cores clocked at a speed of 1.3GHz. All these cores ran simultaneously. However, the new 4G LTE version is powered by a quad-core processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AC) clocked at a speed of 2.5GHz. The 4 high performance cores that run simultaneously at a speed of 2.46GHz. Also, one of the most important differences is surely the graphics chip. The 3G version came with Exynos graphics processing (Mali-T628 having multiple cores). However, the new 4G version has Adreno 330 graphics chip. Though, theoretically, Exynos version is expected to fare better, the Snapdragon 4G version fared better in practical graphic tests.
Let us now compare the connectivity options available in both the handsets. The three month old Samsung Galaxy S5 4G version came with 3G, Wi-Fi, and 2G network support. However, in the new Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered version there is a 4G antenna supporting eight 4G LTE bands and one of the bands is 2300MHz TD LTE Indian band. The latest Samsung Galaxy S5 4G version comes with faster internet network availability. This has been ensured through the introduction of Wi-Fi MiMo and Download Booster technologies. Therefore, you will be able to download data from internet much faster in the latest version. Though the earlier version was launched at a price of more than Rs. 50,000, currently, it is sold at a price around Rs. 35,000. The 4G version is launched at a price of Rs. 53,500. The verdict is quite clear. The latest version is definitely way better than the earlier version and the higher price for 4G LTE version is perfectly justified.
July 21, 2014: Samsung, the South Korean electronics giant, has launched its updated version of Galaxy S5 4G. This new model consists of the 4G LTE connectivity option that helps users to access faster internet facility. There are not many mobiles in India that provide this facility. Some of the other devices that offer 4G LTE connectivity include Xolo LT900, Oppo Find 7, Apple iPhone 5C, and many others. Samsung Galaxy S5 4G is priced at Rs. 53,500 and therefore, has been placed in the same bracket as Apple’s iPhone 5s, another handset that is 4G LTE compliant.
Samsung India’s Vice President (Marketing, Mobile & IT), Asim Warsi, has said that they are very excited to introduce the updated version of S5 in India and hope to catch the imagination of tech aficionados and professionals who look out for greater multimedia content. The company is also allowing the existing consumers of Samsung Galaxy S5 to upgrade their models to the 4G LTE version at an upgrade cost of Rs. 10,000. The new handset is available in the market in three color options including Shimmery White, Charcoal Black, and Copper Gold. It needs special mention that the 3G compliant model of Galaxy S5 was launched in India back in April 2014. Inspite of the presence of other titans in the smartphone market such as Sony Xperia Z2 or HTC One (M8), S5 made its presence felt in the flagship smartphone market.
Within three months of the 3G model’s launch, the company brought the 4G compliant model. The timing of launching the updated version is important too. This upgrade was brought into the market a day prior to the India launch of LG G3, one of the most talked about smartphones globally. Analysts say that this update was done because of two reasons. First, they want to remain relevant even after the launch of LG G3 and second, they want to add value to consumer needs by adding faster 4G LTE internet connectivity. While launching this new updated version of S5, Samsung has made it sure that it adds more value to the service by tying up with Airtel for 4G subscription. The buyers of this product will be able to get free 4G data of 5GB per month for two consecutive months. As Airtel is in the process of providing the service in India, users can’t access this in every part of India. Presently, it is available in 11 cities only.
The new handset not only comes with 4G capability but also with many interesting features such as 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, 16-megapixel camera, resistance to dust and water, latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system, Download Booster, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC processor chip, and many more. While the 3G version costs Rs. 37,090, the new 4G version is priced at Rs. 53,550. The most important features of Samsung Galaxy S5 4G are:
*Powered by a quad-core processor (Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801) clocked at a speed of 2.5GHz
*Runs on the latest Android KitKat 4.4.2 operating system
*Multiple connectivity options available such as 2G, 3G,G LTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Multi-Input Multi-Output (MiMo) etc
*Available in two distinct versions based on internal storage capacity - 16GB and 32GB
*Dual camera features available - 16 megapixels rear camera and a 2.1 megapixels front faced secondary camera
*Samsung has tied up with Airtel to provide free 4G data of 5GB per month for two consecutive months to the subscribers, who buy this handset or upgrade Galaxy S5 to 4G LTE connection
