Samsung Galaxy Young 2 - Expert Reviews
There has been a sudden surge in the entry level segment of the smartphone industry as benchmarks have been raised in a matter of months. Motorola Moto G has changed the scenario and has raised consumer's expectations in terms of what they should expect from an entry level device. This has led to a trickle down effect and now, firms of all scales have readjusted their strategies as their older offerings have started to be become obsolete. Companies like Micromax, Karbonn, iBall and even tier1 firms like Samsung, HTC and Sony are suddenly on guard and are looking to match their competitors to lure in more audience. The Galaxy models from Samsung in the entry level category have always managed to attract the masses but over the years, thanks to an increate in competition, Samsung needs to up its game and deliver more than ever before.
Samsung Galaxy Young 2 is a budget device that is aimed at the young consumers who would like to experience the world of Android but without burning a hole in their pockets. Samsung Galaxy Young 2 is the second edition of the same model and features a 3.5 inches display that runs on a resolution of 320 by 480 pixels. The gadget is fairly small and has a length of 109.8mm, breadth of 59.9mm and thickness of 11.8mm. At 108 grams, the device is not that heavy and is easy to carry around. The touchscreen device has a dual SIM facility, which is always helpful for consumers needing to change their tariff plans frequently. One of the better points of the device includes its operating system of Android KitKat 4.4, which enables access to plenty of apps and games. Android KitKat 4.4 offers a different interface design in comparison to Jelly Bean and thus, would definitely auger well with the users.
The gadget, Samsung Galaxy Young 2, is not that superior when it comes to the hardware, for it features only a single-core processor with 1GHz frequency along with a ‘not so great’ RAM of 512MB. For a device featuring Android KitKat 4.4 operating system, the device certainly lacks a lot of fire power when it comes to the hardware. This definitely goes to show the budget controlling factors that a firm deploys for providing better specs at a given price. Another section where Samsung seems to be doing cost cutting is the camera segment that lacks a secondary front camera, which means, there would be no video calling. However, there are other features within the device that enhance its overall capability including the 4GB compatibility that is ideal for accessing a faster Internet service.
Operating system and UI
Samsung Galaxy Young 2 comes with a 3.5 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen with modest figures backing it up including a resolution of 320 by 480 pixels and a pixel density of 165ppi. There are two kinds of sensors used for the display such as the light sensor and proximity sensor.
Samsung Galaxy Young 2 mobile holds a music and a video player. The sound quality of the smartphone would be more fruitful with earphones that can be connected to the device by using a 3.5mm jack. Treble and Bass are alright, although the latter of the two may be not be as good as we have seen in some of the higher range models. The videos support plenty of formats with decent results as far as the image quality is concerned.
One of the major drawbacks of Samsung Galaxy Young 2 is the absence of a secondary camera, which immediately eliminates video calling or taking selfies from the equation. The primary camera is okay as far as pixel backup is concerned with 3 megapixels of the same snapping images with reasonable results. However, videos recorded are not the best when it comes to clarity with a VGA resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. The primary rear shutter lacks auto focus and LED flash, so there is not much scope for photography enthusiasts.
Samsung Galaxy Young 2 is compatible with 4G technology, which means, web access would be faster for websites that require high buffering speed like Facebook and YouTube. The device also gets a downloading speed of up to 21Mbps and an uploading speed of up to 5.76Mbps. There is SNS integration along with preinstalled support for Google Plus, Gmail, Gtalk etc.
Only 2GB of the given 4GB internal memory can be accessed by the user through Samsung Galaxy Young 2, which would be a major hindrance for users who are looking to keep a large amount of data related to songs, games, images and videos. To solve the same, Samsung Galaxy Young 2 gets an external microSD card slot, which can store data of up to 32GB capacity.
Applications like file manager, App locker, WhatsApp, Viber etc., can be downloaded onto the device through Google play store. Games like Asphalt, NFS, Fruit Ninja, Subway Surfer and Motorboat Racing that are popular with Android fans can be enjoyed on Samsung Galaxy Young 2 too. Android KitKat 4.4 OS would bring with it loads of tools for better interface and many subtle changes in terms of presentation of icons on screen and its usage, which the user shall relish.
There is no data available at the moment on the amount of talk time and standby time that the smartphone would offer but a 1300mAh standard lithium-ion battery should carve out at least 6 hours of usage time for the users. Samsung Galaxy Young 2 can last for a long duration for multimedia activities but web connectivity would certainly drain out more power than desired.
Samsung Galaxy Young 2 has a USB port and Bluetooth as expected for exchanging data with other gadgets including songs, games, images and videos. For web access, the device possesses features like GPRS, EDGE, HTML5 browser and Wi-Fi. There are tethering facilities available with the device as well in the shape of Wi-Fi hot spot while OTA sync is another feature of this segment. Frequencies at which the device works include 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz for 2G SIM while frequencies like 900 and 1800MHz are compatible for 3G.
Samsung Galaxy Young 2, when compared to Sony Xperia E, has a similar display size of 3.5 inches with both the displays featuring 165ppi of pixel density. Samsung Galaxy Young 2 is dual SIM in nature, which is not true for Sony Xperia E. Samsung Galaxy Young 2 does not have a scratch resistant display, which Sony Xperia E does provide. Both the devices have a 1GHz single-core processor and 512MB of RAM but Samsung Galaxy Young 2 comes with the brand new Android KitKat 4.4 operating system while Sony Xperia E has a much more outdated version of Android Jelly Bean 4.1.
There is no secondary camera in both the devices whereas the primary camera is more or the less the same with 3.15 megapixels for Sony Xperia E and 3 megapixels for Samsung Galaxy Young 2. If we had to choose, we would go with the primary shutter of Sony Xperia E as far as the quality of images are concerned. Internal memory and microSD card slot potential is same for both the gadgets at 4GB and 32GB respectively. Samsung Galaxy Young 2 runs on a 1300mAh standard lithium-ion battery as compared to the 1530mAh standard lithium-ion battery of Sony Xperia E.

Samsung Galaxy Young 2 is the more budget friendly of the lot although prices for all the gadgets are not announced as of yet. Samsung Galaxy Young 2 comes with a 3.5 inches display and a 1GHz single-core processor. RAM is 512MB with the device while it features 4GB of internal memory and a 32GB external microSD card slot. The highlights of the device are as follows:
