Samsung Rex 80 Red - Expert Reviews

There are only a few big names in the Smartphone market including Samsung, Apple and HTC. One of the characteristics that make these firms a big name is the fact that they concentrate on quality and do not manufacture devices in a large quantity so as to cater to the masses. On one side, a company like Apple has that aura about it with the company concentrating only on the iPhone range. Similarly HTC has been very choosy about what kind of products it wants to release. Samsung, on the other hand, has not been afraid to break mould. They have an array of devices that run the hierarchy in every possible segment. Samsung Rex 80 is a mid low range kind of device that has a 3-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen. There is nothing grandeur about the resolution of the screen and same thing can be said about the pixel density. As far as the dimensions of the device are concerned, it has a length of 102mm, a breadth of 58mm and a height of 11.5mm. Like the other members of the Rex series, Samsung Rex 80 also has a formidable battery of 1,000mAh that produces more than a respectable talk time of up to 14 hours and 10 minutes. The camera of 3.2 megapixels is located at the back of the device that produces surprisingly worthy images. This does not necessarily mean that the images are the kind that can be hung on the walls as portraits. Video recordings are a little disappointing but still tolerable. Internal memory is of 10MB, which is futile by any standards but the user can use the microSD card slot that is available at the top of the device through which the user can broaden the external memory up to 16GB.

The user in that case can stock up a vast collection of data including songs, games, images and videos without worrying about the memory space running out. The device is available in the color of white, gray, blue and red. Internet is assisted by the Wi-Fi along with the built-in browser and the GPRS and EDGE facilities. The web speed is certainly not swift or lag-free but as compared to other devices of such range, especially from other tier2 companies, it is pretty competitive. Bluetooth and USB port are also provided by the device so as to exchange data with other devices. Samsung Rex 80 is a dual-SIM handset, so it is lets the user keep two SIM cards for having two numbers active at the same time. This would save time and money for the user when he or she is travelling. Music can be heard by the user through the music player or through the FM radio while a video player is also accommodated for watching decent quality videos. Other valuable features offered by the device include Samsung ChatOn mobile communication service, Yahoo Messenger (Push IM), Gtalk, Facebook Chat, Enhanced SNS (Java Facebook, Twitter), Opera Mini, Access NF.

Operating system and UI

Samsung Rex 80 has a 3-inch TFT touchscreen with a reasonable swiping speed. The resolution offered by the screen is 240 by 320 pixels whereas the pixel density that backs the device is 133ppi, a little lower than some of the other Rex models.

Other Features

Samsung Rex 80 has a music player that can be used to listen to some of the best in music that the entertainment world has to offer. The video player can be used to watch videos of desired nature. FM radio lets the user listen to the preffered radio stations and also record songs as and when desired.

Samsung Rex 80 has a 3.15 megapixel camera for capturing images and shooting videos where the results obtained from the former is acceptable but the latter leaves a lot to be desired for. The user can click pictures at a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels.

Samsung Rex 80 has the Wi-Fi facility for using any external connections to access the web. There is also the default browser for doing the same. Facebook and Twitter access should not be a problem while downloading of images, songs and games is also easy but videos and movies would take a toll on the device.

Samsung Rex 80 offers a petite internal memory of 10MB, which is as good as storing up to 1,000 phonebook entries. Anything further than that, the user needs the microSD card slot to work in its favour, which can expand the external memory to 16GB at best.

Other Features

Samsung Rex 80 is self effacing as far as the number of games is concerned. The user can download more from the web but the quality of games would be unpleasant to say the least when compared to the kinds offered by Android gadgets.

Samsung Rex 80 is driven by the standard lithium-ion 1,000mAh battery that carves out one of the most impressive talk time one would get in a budget device with up to 14 hours and 10 minutes. Even the web surfing time is also good.

Samsung Rex 80 has bags of data connectivity features like the Bluetooth facility that can be used for exchanging data with other devices while there is also the USB port that enables the user to charge the device, transfer or receive data with other compatible devices. The GPRS can be used to route through the desired destination. Wi-Fi and EDGE are also made available for accessing the web and Internet.

Other Features

Samsung Rex 80 when compared to Nokia Asha 310 has a similar screen size with 3 inches but the latter offers a better resolution. Both the device support the dual-SIM technology have a microSD card slot but Samsung Rex 80 has the potential of up to 16GB whereas Nokia Asha 310 has a potential of 4GB only. Nokia Asha 310 has a more responsive touchscreen as compared to Samsung Rex 80. Samsung Rex 80 has a better camera with 3.2 megapixels as compared to 2 megapixels offered by Nokia Asha 310. Still there is not much difference in the image quality. Other features are more or less the same.

Other Features

25th February 2013: Samsung released another member in the low-cost Rex series that features devices in various ranges as far as their screen sizes, camera strength and Internet facilities are concerned. Samsung Rex 80 has a 3-inch display and is backed by a 3.2 megapixels primary camera. The battery strength, like all of the Rex models, is pretty decent with 1,000mAh that gives out a fantastic talk time.

• 3-inch TFT touchscreen
• 1,000mAh standard lithium-ion battery
• 3.2 megapixels rear camera
• FM radio
• Music player + Video player
• Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPRS, Bluetooth and USB Port are some of the basic connectivity features supported.
