Xiaomi Redmi Note White - Expert Reviews
Xiaomi, the popular smartphone manufacturer of China has launched its first 5.5 inches phablet back in March named Xiaomi Redmi Note. It, however, took the company four more months to launch the device in India. During its launch, the company stressed on the after sales and customer care service capabilities, showing its intent of catching the imagination of the burgeoning Indian smartphone brigade. Before checking out the design and other attractive features of this budget smartphone, let us first check out the good as well as bad factors here. It comes with a dual SIM capability, sharp camera, vibrant display, and most importantly, with an interface that is easy to understand. It also comes with some disadvantages too. It is slightly overweight. While average smartphones weigh around 134 grams, this device weighs 199 grams. You may feel ‘oily’ palms after using the smartphone for long hours because of the presence of glossy plastic.
Two other features that you will miss here are radio and the inability to connect the smartphone to a television. If you were expecting 4G LTE connection facility in this device, you will be disheartened not to find it here. However, Redmi Note surely comes with cutting edge features, satisfying performance, and great display. You will get all these advanced features at an affordable price. This device has lots of plastic around and therefore, will give you a feel of any other plastic phone available in the market. If you want to hide the fingerprint smudges on its plastic body, you have to choose the color prudently. After prolonged use, the device may become more slippery and may create problems in gripping. While checking out the device on hand, the first thing we felt is its bigger size and heavier weight.
Another similar sized device to Redmi Note is Sony Xperia C3. While the latter weighs 150 grams, Note weighs 199 grams. One of the greatest aspects of this smartphone is the octa-core processor. Don’t think the 8 cores of the processor will drain the battery charge, for the Cortex-A7 architecture allocates tasks to every core individually, which reduces heat and power usage. This powerful processor ensures that the apps, web pages, and games run smoothly on this device. When it comes to graphics, the output is simply stunning. This has been ensured by the powerful Mali-450 GPU chip, which is regarded as the fastest movable GPU. If you love capturing great pictures from your smartphone, Xiaomi Redmi Note ensures the same by providing dual camera options – a 13MP primary rear camera and a 5MP secondary front faced camera. You can not only click great selfies but also record daily life moments. Overall, you can capture high resolution images with this Redmi Note smartphone. With 3G internet facility, impressive 2GB RAM, MIUI V5 user interface, this device from Xiaomi gives great value for your money.
Operating system and UI
MIUI is the heavily customized user interface of Xiaomi and looks very similar to iOS. Though Redmi Note runs on a slightly outdated Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system, MIUI adds a lot of functionality to the phablet. Most importantly, the concerned manufacturer has a great reputation of updating MIUI. You can bring the music player widget quite easily by quickly swiping the music player icon downward. The performance of the smartphone can be increased manifold by using the security app. If you hit the Optimize button once, you can clear unused files. The entire phone can be scanned if you tap the Check button. Instead of using microUSB port, you can use FTP for transferring files out of the smartphone. No app drawer is there and users will get pages of apps. LED flash can be activated by pressing and holding the home button. MIUI also enables users to lock often-used apps so that they can be prevented from getting cleared.
You might find it a bit awkward to hold this smartphone in hand with its 5.5 inches display screen, but reading the texts and icons easily is not a problem here. The display comes with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and the IPS technology not only provides decent visual experience but also ensures sharp images and vibrant colors. However, the shadows are too harsh and the blacks on screen too dark. Moreover, we found out that night scenes having low light within the video seemed particularly grainy. However, overall images and videos look good at the existing resolution. Under strong sunlight, Xiaomi Redmi Note kicks in automatic brightness, resulting in better screen visibility. When in an indoor environment, the screen readjusts almost instantly, thereby stopping the screen from blinding. The octa-core processor enhances the performance multifold as you will be able to play the most advanced games without lag or stutter. Multitasking, as well as using multiple apps is simply great.
Moving or rearranging apps are particularly smooth and easy at Xiaomi Redmi Note. You can move apps quickly from screen to screen by simply tapping and holding individual applications. This can be followed by swiping and changing of current page through the use of another finger. It makes the user interface, easy and intuitive. In most smartphones, this facility is not available and the apps are required to be dragged to the screen edge for changing page, which not only takes longer time but is also fiddly.
Multimedia features are great, especially the sound factor. Whether it is the earphone or the loudspeaker, you will definitely get the best sound quality. Speakers are located at the bottom-right corner of the rear side. Therefore, you will feel that the sound is being cast away from your direction while you are listening to music or watching videos without earphones. There is a downside too. You can’t put the smartphone flat on a desk because that will mute the device literally.
In Xiaomi Redmi Note, the music player is filtered by categories such as Playlists, Artist, and Album. Two important features that you will get are Background Playback and Album Art Cover. If you love watching free videos, you will be able to do that by watching it on the YouTube player. Other than this player, the supports include Calendar, Voice Commands, Instant Messaging and MMS. You will get Push Email facility and Document Reader. You will not get any FM Radio here and that’s a great let down. Multiple file support is available for both, video and music player. The music files supported on this mobile are eAAC+, WAV, and MP3. Also, the video files support available is H.263, H.264 and MP4 respectively.
Dual cameras are available in Xiaomi Redmi Note. The primary one is located at the back end and the secondary one at the front end. The rear camera comes with a 13 megapixels sensor and is capable of providing excellent service during daytime. For macro shots, you can get great details in the image. The autofocus option is good, but not spectacular. It takes less than a second in refocusing and taking a shot. However, at a sub-Rs. 10K smartphone, you cannot expect the features of a flagship smartphone that costs four times more than Redmi Note. The secondary front faced camera is also great, for it comes with a 5 megapixels sensor and can capture sharp selfies. The most interesting thing you will find here is the voice-activated shutter that saves you from fumbling with the shutter button.
The camera interface is also quite good, mainly because it is simple and nice. Some of the basic features you will get here are panorama, white balance setting, ISO, and confounding exposure. However, during night time or low light conditions, the pictures get very noisy. It is only in optimal lighting conditions that you will get high-quality images.
Internet facility is quite good in this budget phablet as it supports WLAN as well as 3G internet. However, if you are expecting 4G LTE support, you will be disappointed. In India, there are only a handful of flagship handsets that come with 4G connectivity. Expecting this faster internet version in a sub-Rs. 10,000 device is surely asking for too much. Still, web pages open quickly and the entire web browsing experience is smooth. Users will also get WLAN802.11b/g/n facility at Xiaomi Redmi Note apart from GPS+ AGPS facility.
Memory and storage capacities are great on this budget phone. It provides 2GB RAM facility, on one hand, and 8GB of flash memory facility, on the other. In case you think the internal storage capacity to be inadequate, you can use the external storage support by up to a maximum of 32GB.
Xiaomi Redmi Note comes with an octa-core processor that clocks at a speed of 1.7GHz. This processor has eight simultaneous cores and therefore, gives more power than a quad-core or a four core processor. The efficiency of the processor has increased manifold by allocating resources to different applications at the same time. We were pleasantly surprised by the performance because it was almost as fast as any other high-end smartphone. But compared to the high end ones, Redmi Note is a budget phone. Stutter free games can be played for long hours. Gaming aficionados will simply love this device. We have found out that the Menu transition is especially fluid. The Mediatek octa-core processor handles high-end graphic and advanced games such as Real Racing 3 and Dead Trigger 2 with absolute ease. This device is particularly great at handling, fast and multiple frames just like a pro.
We watched the messy action sequences of Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction with complete clarity. Moving the apps is particularly easy and no dragging of apps is required for changing the page, for you simply need to tap and hold the app with one finger.
Xiaomi Redmi Note comes with a battery capacity of 3,200mAh and we have found it to last for more than a day, even after extreme usage. The mobile has been engineered in a way where each core of the eight cores handles separate functions, thus saving lots of battery capacity. In case of light usage, the battery lasted for three complete days with full charge. With light usage, we meant watching YouTube videos for one or two hours per day, sending a couple of emails, and capturing a few photos. We also used the device intensively for an hour or so by downloading as well as playing resource intensive games (such as Angry Birds Go!, GT Racing 2, and Badland), browsing the web and watching YouTube videos. Even after this extensive use, we found out that only 24 per cent of the battery has been used in that intensive usage. For a budget smartphone to last for so many hours is surely an achievement.
Multiple connectivity options are available on Xiaomi Redmi Note. You can browse the web smoothly. This smartphone supports up to 3G speed but 4G LTE is not available. Therefore, the speed of the internet facility will depend upon the network connection you are having. This handset comes with dual SIM support and hence, you don’t have to buy another phone to use your second number. Two network supports are available and they are 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA. WLAN802.11b/g/n facility is available for users to connect to the net. The other connectivity options available are GPS+AGPS and BT4.0LE +BT3.0HS Bluetooth. The network frequencies supported are GSM 900/1800/1900MHz 2G and 900/2100MHz 3G respectively.
In this section, we compare Xiaomi Redmi Note with Lenovo S860. Both handsets run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system. While the Xiaomi device comes with a 5.5 inches display, the latter has a 5.3 inches display. When the lengths are compared, the latter is slightly bigger than the former. IPS LCD multitouch technology is used on the screens of both the handsets. While the resolution in both the displays is the same, pixel densities vary slightly (267ppi versus 277ppi). Sensors such as Proximity and Light are there in both Redmi Note and S860. The camera features are way better at the Xiaomi handset than in that of Lenovo. The former comes with a 13MP primary rear camera, a 5MP secondary camera and associated features such as HDR, autofocus, smile detection, touch to focus, geo-tagging, manual focus, LED Flash, etc., in the latter, you will get an 8MP primary camera, a 1.6MP secondary camera, and limited features such as autofocus and LED flash.
While the Lenovo device is powered by a quad-core processor, Xiaomi Redmi Note is run by an octa-core processor. The battery capacity at Lenovo S860 is of 4000mAh but at Note, it is just 3200mAh. Though the battery performance at the Xiaomi device is good, the same at Lenovo is better. After checking the major features of both the devices, our verdict goes in favour of Xiaomi Redmi Note.
