XOLO A1000 Black - Expert Reviews
Indian smartphone maker Lava Mobiles has launched the XOLO A1000, yet another Phablet all-set to join the recent trend of huge, unpocketable phones that have taken the Indian smartphone segment by storm. The Lava XOLO A1000 comes close on the heels of the Micromax Canvas HD with a gorgeous 5-inch IPS LCD display, built with One Glass Screen (OGS) technology, which gives the device a slimmer waistline and crisper display resolution. Like the Canvas HD, the XOLO A1000 also comes with a 720p HD display with resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It is powered by a 1GHz dual-core Mediatek MT6577 processor with 1GB of RAM. The Lava XOLO A1000 runs on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, which is admittedly outdated. It is not clear whether an update for Android 4.2 is on the cards. The XOLO A1000 scores high on design and form factor. It is only 8.6mm in thickness and the device has slightly curved edges and a chrome lining throughout the bezel. The top panel of the device houses the 3.5mm audio jack and the USB/Charging port. The camera shortcut button is unusually placed on the left panel of the phone, forcing you to turn the phone back straight with your left hand after clicking your snapshot. It also acts as a screenshot shortcut button. The bottom of the display houses the three shortcut buttons- Menu, Home, and Back, embossed into the surface. The XOLO A1000 comes with an 8MP primary camera with BSI sensor technology, autofocus, and LED flash.
The camera protrudes outwards, just like in the Micromax Canvas HD, which is very inconvenient when you place the phone on its back. A 1.2MP camera adorns the top of the display for video-calling facility. The device packs 4GB of internal memory, which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card. It comes with various connectivity options including Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB 2.0. It also offers 3G connectivity with HSUPA speeds up to 5.7Mbps and HSDPA speeds up to 7.2Mbps, which are not very impressive. The Lava XOLO A1000 is powered by a 2100mAh Li-Ion battery that lasts just about a day on moderate usage and a little less than a day on heavy usage including browsing on Wi-Fi or 3G, watching YouTube videos and downloading apps from the Google Play Store.
Operating system and UI
The XOLO A1000 is powered by Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, which is a bit outdated since most phones today come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. The company has not tinkered around with the stock interface much unlike other manufacturers like Sony and Samsung who prefer to paste their own customized skins to the stock interface. The device comes with Project Butter that ensures the interface works smoothly without any lag. The 1GHz dual-core processor combined with 1GB of RAM is adequate to keep the phone running smoothly without any glitches. Resource-heavy games like Temple Run 2 and Angry Birds run without any stutter.
The Lava XOLO A1000 offers the stock audio and video player to meet your multimedia needs, unlike other brands such as Sony that load the Walkman app on their smartphones. While the audio player is capable of various audio formats including MP3, WAV, MDI, AAC and 3GP, the video player is capable of playing several video formats such as MPEG4, MP4, H.263 and H.264. While AVI is not supported by the stock video player, you can always install a third-party video player to play AVI files. FM radio is also supported by the device.
The XOLO A1000 sports an 8MP primary camera and a 1.2MP front camera, both with BSI Sensor. Additional camera features include autofocus and LED flash. The 8MP shooter takes decent pictures in the daylight and indoor snapshots are not bad either. Some helpful features in the camera app include select timer, HDR mode, and white balance. The HDR mode is used when taking high-contrast snapshots as it helps to balance off the image’s light range. Some preset filters are available as well, to enhance your pictures, such as sepia, mono, aqua, negative, whiteboard, and blackboard. The 8MP shooter is capable of taking 720p HD video @ 30fps. It would have certainly been better if it had included support for recording 1080p Full HD video, given the high price that the device commands. Moreover, the videos are saved in .3GP format, which, being an older format, greatly reduces video quality due to file compression.
The XOLO A1000 offers various options of connecting to the internet, including 2G, 3G, and Wi-Fi connectivity. You can also share your internet connection using the Wi-Fi hotspot feature. However, one major disappointment is the relatively slow speeds offered on 3G: HSUPA 5.4Mbps and HSDPA 7.2Mbps that trails those offered by the Micromax Canvas HD (HSDPA 21Mbps). While Android’s stock browser is available, it is advisable to install Google Chrome, which offers more features like Chrome Sync, to enhance your browsing experience.
The device packs 4GB of internal memory with an option to expand up to 32GB. While it must be adequate for most smartphone users, those who use their smartphones as their primary computing device may have preferred an option to expand up to 64GB.
The XOLO A1000 comes pre-loaded with the XOLO Care app that is present on all phones in the XOLO series. All it does is to help the user contact customer care through email, SMS, and phone call. The ToDo app also comes pre-loaded with the XOLO A1000 that helps you to organize your day by assisting you in planning tasks and achieving them within a set time. You can download more apps from the Google Play Store. As mentioned before, the XOLO A1000 manages to run games like Temple Run 2, Fast Racing and Angry Birds without difficulty.
The XOLO A1000 is powered by a 2100mAh Li-Ion battery that gives average battery life. Under medium to heavy usage, the device manages to last just about a day.
The XOLO A1000 comes with all the standard connectivity options including 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, GPS (No GLONASS), etc.
We can easily compare the Lava XOLO A1000 with the Micromax Canvas A116 HD, which shares a lot of features with the former. Both devices come with 5-inch IPS LCD and 720p HD displays with similar pixel density. Both come with 8MP shooters, however the Micromax Canvas HD comes with Dual-LED flash (not that it makes much difference) and a 2MP camera. On the other hand, the XOLO A1000 comes with a more powerful battery compared to the 2000mAh Li-Ion unit that powers the Canvas HD. But the most significant and shocking difference between the two phones is that while the Lava XOLO A1000 comes with a 1GHz dual-core processor, the Micromax Canvas A116 HD is powered by a more powerful 1.2GHz quad-core processor. This difference will cost the XOLO A1000 dearly since both phones are similarly priced, so consumers are bound to go for the Canvas HD if only for the quad-core processor.
The Lava XOLO A1000 comes with a price tag of Rs. 13,999, which is almost identical to the Rs. 13,990 price tag atop the Micromax Canvas A116 HD. The phone was launched in March this year and competes with other phones in its category, including the Micromax Canvas A116 HD, Karbonn S1 Titanium, and the Spice Stellar Pinnacle Mi-530.
