Not a regular mp3 player
by J Sri Ram on 2013-07-06
I have started listening to audio books when i run and for that purpose this is not a good device. it does not have the ability to fast forward tracks (you can skip tracks) and no function to bookmark. If you switch off the device it starts playing back the current song from the beginning! Imagine that for a one hour mp3 file!! when it is paused it keeps saying paused every 5 seconds which is quite irritating! I know it is paused woman...now shut up!! if you want it only for music then it is quite a good device. greatest advantage - no dangling wires. sound quality is fine but not out of the world, i have heard better quality. volume is not too high which is a good thing. high volume at long runs is certainly not good. the battery back up is about nine hours. the built in pedometer is gimmicky. certainly does not give the correct reading of calories spent but the time it says is right.
so if all you are looking for is to listen to music when you workout in short bursts this is a good device. else, i will recommend that you look elsewhere. there is one by sony is a good comparison!
Good Player. Working perfectly
by Vikas on 2013-02-25
Its a good player.
Good control buttons and voice guide.
Good battery backup.
Though comfort is OK, it could have been better.
Thanks to Flipkart, they shipped it faster then they said they would.

Okay so I got the replacement player. This one doesn't have the battery problem below. Also I do get the settings option on this one once I install songbird unlike the last one.
I however still can't figure out when the battery is charged. I see a flashing purple light (red+blue = purple) and then a steady purple light. The manula says i should see a blue light when charged.
I also don't think this is supposed to work for 12 hours. After a charge I get a message saying less than 9 hours remaining. I have not tested it to see how long the battery actually lasts but I guess it is better than the experience I had before so am putting up with it.
I still would rate this at 3/5 because of the bad experience.
However thumbs up to flipkart for sending a replacement so quickly. I will never buy Philips again though.
I bought this for a run and the podometer feature.
Firstly the settings file doesn't exist on the player as it should.
Second it says that when done charging a blue light will come on and while charging a red light will be on.
The red light goes away and I get a pink light that comes on and flashes after a few hours of charging.
Assuming that is in place of the blue light I disconnect and the voice prompt says it has 9 hours of playback (12 hrs is advertised).
Then after 20 mins of playback it says 6 hours left.
2 hours later it says 3 hours left
Then after 1.5 hours it says less than an hour left.
It then plays for 1 hour.
So essentially I get 4.5 hours of play time instead of 12 hours.
The other thing is that if I charge it at night and switch it off the battery drains while off.
Flipkart has agreed to send a replacement. I will see how that is.
However I called Philips and they had no idea why a pink light was on. Essentially the guy at the other end was reading the manual that I read. Very poor support. He wanted to give me the service center number. How pathetic is it if you have to go to a service center the day after you buy a product.
If it was not for flipkart being so gracious I would have never bought a Philips product again. Well if I do it will only be from Flipkart.
However I wish Flipkart had agreed to simply take it back and let me pick up a more reliable player.
Other than the bad experience I like the player. The sound quality is decent.

I bought this last year around september and I am really satisfied with the battery life, sound quality and the build quality as well. Let me talk about the battery life first since this is what most of the potential buyers look for in a product.
NOTE - Charge this device for atleast 3-4 hours as sooon as you recieve for the first time so that it lasts as long as I mention down here.
BATTERY LIFE - Lasts me easily 10 hours of continous playback. I use it when I hit the gym whch lasts an hour and when I go jogging which lasts half an hour, with this type of usage I get around solid 2-3 weeks!!! Now that is pretty impressive for this price and this is in accordance with a full charge.
SOUND QUALITY - The sound is really good and the songs that I have are not so bassy so the player works really well for other types of music. I usually listen to OSTs and other movie tracks mostly and the player does a great job at other genres as well.
BUILD QUALITY - Its designed to fit comfortably behind your head and it stays rigid with very little to no irritation at the nape of your neck. Besides the fact that it is very well built, it is also splash proof. This doesn't mean that you can take this with you for your shower. I am not saying that you cant, as a matter of fact I did a couple of times and I had no trouble later on. Just make sure the USB cover is tightly capped.
Alright folks, that is all you need to know about this. Definitely buy this if you are looking for a budget mp3 player that can accompany you during your workouts, jogs and even a little bit of bathroom time.
Biggest mistake of my life!

Good Product - Worth the Money !

First of all, thanks to the Seller BigBox & Flipkart for their prompt services!
Received the product in just 2 days.
Now about the product:
1. Design & Ergonomics (4/5) - Extremely light weight, good design & style. Easy fit & comfortable. Does not move or become loose while doing any kind of workout.
Initially you'll find the buttons little difficult to operate due to their size & placement but as you use it more & more you become comfortable with the operation.
2. Sound Quality (3/5) - Sound quality is above average , actually it depends on the quality of the mp3 song file. You can try different bit rate & music genre files to suite your taste. Obviously, the sound quality is not as good as Sony, Sony is master in this area, so do not compare Sony & Philips :).
3. Battery Life (4/5) - When I received the product, immediately connected it to my PC & copied around 3 GB of songs. After that I let it charge for 2-3 hours.
When I started the player, it said "Battery remaining less than 9 hours".
I used it for around 6.5-7 hours (not continuous) & then battery drained completely.
I'll have to use it more to judge the exact battery life, but still I'm satisfied with the first time use - it may give ~8 hours for full charge. I guess the battery drains even if the device is in power OFF state which is not a good thing.
4. Other features (3/5) -
Pedometer (not used yet).
Philips Song-Bird - Good player & synch utility, provides firmware upgrades for the device & sets the personal information used by the pedometer (like age, height, weight & length of stride).
Overall (4/5): I feel that a player of ~3K bucks is doing a satisfactory job, it is really worth the money. I'm really enjoying it.
I would really recommend this product for those who want a stylish, light & quality product from a branded company @ reasonable price!
If you want better sound quality, then get Sony NWZ-W273S 4 GB MP3 Player & obviously you'll have to pay twice the bucks (~6K).
