Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite - Expert Reviews

The Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite is yet another of those budget tablets that we see flooding the market these days, the latest entry being Apple’s iPad Mini. The MediaPad 7 Lite features a aluminum unibody shell measuring 193mm x 120mm x 11mm and weighing in at 370g. On its front, it sports a cool 7-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with multitouch facility, having a resolution of 600x1024 pixels (170 ppi pixel density) and support for 256K colors. It also features an  3.15MP camera with image resolution of 2048x1536 pixels which is certainly not something to sing songs about. It is only good for the occasional snapshot and not for much else. It manages to record 720p video @30fps which is not bad.  The MediaPad 7 Lite runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a must for any budget tablet these days, and is powered by a 1.2 GHz Cortex-A8 processor along with 1GB of RAM. So far, so good. When it comes to connectivity features ,the MediaPad 7 Lite does not disappoint- it features support for Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and micro USB 2.0 and even Assisted GPS (A-GPS). While the official specs show that the tablet will be powered by a 4100 mAh Li-Po standard battery, Huawei has not mentioned the estimated battery life that will be offered.

Operating system and UI

Unlike other tablet manufacturers, Huawei has chosen not to tinker around much with the Android 4.0 interface, aside from adding its DLNA file-sharing app. You get to take advantage of split-screen functionality in several applications, such as the native email client and the calendar. For instance, while viewing your mail, you can have two panes- one listing the emails and the other displaying the content of the mail. The Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite is a unique budget tablet because it also offers calling functionality. Just insert a SIM card in the slot located on the side and you can not only make and receive calls, but also use cellular data service on the move.

Other Features

The 7-inch IPS display makes it a treat to watch videos and movies on the MediaPad 7 Lite. The capable 1.2 Ghz processor manages to play 720p video effortlessly though 1080p will be a push. A single loudspeaker located near the rear camera manages to play audio loud and clear but its inconvenient location at the back makes it difficult to hear music when the tablet is placed on its back.

A 3.2MP fixed focus camera forms the primary camera of the slate. Image quality is average, not something to write home about. The main problem with the camera is the lack of detail in its images. Video recording is supported up to 640x480 pixels but the disastrous white balance makes it just not worth it. A front-facing VGA camera is provided which is only fit for making video calls.

You can connect to the Internet via 3G or Wi-Fi. While a stock Android browser is provided (sand Adobe Flash support), you can either install Opera Mobile web browser or the Chrome browser. The latter can sync with your desktop Chrome browser so it earns a few brownie points.

While a paltry 8GB of internal memory capacity is provided, you can always expand up to 32GB using a microSD card.

Other Features

The MediaPad 7 Lite gives you access to the Google Play Store. While you may think that this is no big deal, there are several Chinese-made tablets out there that do not offer Play Store access. As an ICS tablet, the MediaPad 7 Lite can run pretty much any app or game that you want from the Play Store.

According to the official specs released by Huawei on its website, it claims that the MediaPad 7 Lite will be powered by a 4100 mAh standard Li-Po battery but nothing more. No word about the estimated talk time or standby time to be offered by the device.

The MediaPad 7 Lite comes equipped with all the basic connectivity features that you can expect from a budget 7-inch tablet today. It features Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, micro USB 2.0 and A-GPS. LTE is not supported and neither is NFC supported on the device.

Other Features

While Huawei had announced the MediaPad 7 Lite way back in July, it has only just released the full specifications of the device, in addition to its availability and its expected price. According to Indian online retailer, the device will be available from the last week of October. The Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite has entered a newly-discovered market that already houses budget tablets from many major tech companies like Apple’s iPad Mini, Micromax’s Funbook, iBall’s Slide 3G 7334, Acer’s Iconia Tab A110, etc.
