Honda Unicorn Alloy - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Since the split up between Honda Motor Company and the Munjals, the owner of Hero group, the Japanese Motor Company, Honda, is aiming to conquer the Indian market alone. Giving stiff competition to its rivals, Hero, Bajaj and TVS, the Honda Motor Company is manufacturing excellent products. In the 2-wheeler market, Honda stands tall with its Activa, Aviator, stunner, Unicorn and other classy vehicles.

Honda Unicorn, made to give competition to Bajaj Pulsar and TVS Apache, has definitely not let Honda down. With its launch in 2005, it won the ‘Motorcycle of the Year’ Award, leaving behind Pulsar and Apache. In 2010 also, the latest version of Unicorn, Unicorn Dazzler, won ‘Bike of the year up to 160cc’ Award by NDTV. The bike never disappointed its buyers since the very beginning and lived up to the tag of Honda of the ‘most reliable brand’. It is the most sophisticated bike in its class in looks ad styling. Engineered for young generation, it sets a new benchmark in the upper segment of the two-wheeler market. Although its popularity is not as much as its opponents, Pulsar and Apache, yet it has kept the trust of Honda lovers. Honda’s dark horse is not much behind the other horses in the race. With its simple yet amazing looks, it is sure to hit among the enthusiasts. Honda Unicorn alloy features black 6-spoke alloy wheels. Placed at such an affordable price and with the amazing performance it offers, it attracts a whole lot of crowd.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

The mileage offered by Honda Unicorn Alloy is at par with other bikes of this segment. The company claims an average of 60 kilometers per hour while actually it offers a mileage of 55-57 kilometers per liter, which is above standard. It has fuel tank of 13 liters with 1.3-liter reserve fuel tank.

Honda’s revamp is available in three different colors- pearl igneous black, space silver metallic, and pearl siena red. The use of red color on several patches on the bike looks fresh and great. Personally, the classic Black looks best on this simple and soothing bike.

Acceleration and Pick up

Compared to Bajaj Pulsar and TVS Apache, the fighting warrior is not too impressive. It does not have a better acceleration than the other two. It reaches 0-60 kilometers per hour in mere 5 seconds, and has top speed of just 101 kilometers per hour, which is below par.

Styling and power are the two main deciding factors for bike in 150 cc segment. Good looks are must for a bike to be sold in masses. Although not as stylish as the other bikes of this segment, Unicorn flaunts a very sophisticated and subtle look. This simple and sober bike does not have very flashy graphics or huge fuel tanks with large tank shrouds, but still manages to win heart of the people. Honda Unicorn carries a muscular and manly look. Honda, being previously criticized for its use of stickers, has used stunning 3D emblem on the fuel tank. Mask and headlamp is inspired from its rival Hero Karizma, and the headlight can be turned on even without starting the engine. This feature is not present in other bikes. The use masculine colors, black and red, have been excellent. The instrument cluster is not impressive at all. It is totally analog, and seems out dated. There are three dials, with speedometer in the center, and rpm meter and fuel gauge on either side.

Comfort Feature

Unicorn carries ‘Honda’ tag with itself, so there is obviously no compromise in comfort. The riding stance is beautiful and even with a huge fuel tank, tall guys will have no problem in riding the bike. The seat is wide and comfortable, both for the rider as well as pillion. The 5-speed gearbox is smooth and the bike can be started in any gear. Even if you call it a ‘tourer’, you won’t be wrong anywhere. It is well suited for long journeys.

Length X Width X Height = 2095 X 750 X 1100 mm.

It has a ground clearance of 168 mm and saddle height of 790 mm. But, the bike is a bit on heavier side. It has curb weight of 149 kilograms, while Apache 160 weighs just 136 kilograms. The diamond-frame chassis looks elegant.

Honda Unicorn Alloy is equipped with a 149.1 cc air-cooled 4-stroke SI engine. Thanks to Honda, the engine is the smoothest in its class. Unlike Apache, there are no vibrations in the engine at any speed. The engine produces a beautiful sound when started, and from then there is no coming back. Unicorn generates a maximum power of 13.3 bhp at 8000 rpm and a maximum torque of 12.8 Nm at 5500 rpm, which is remarkable. With Honda’s continues researches and developments, engine equipped in Honda’s flagship model Unicorn, is definitely best among the class.

Unicorn has 6-spoke black alloy wheels that give Unicorn a sporty look. Although the bike is not equipped with tubeless tires, yet the rear tire is a tuff-up one, which reduces the chances of a puncture. The front tire measures 2.75 X 18’ while the rear one measures 100/90 X 18”. Wheelbase measures 1340 mm. Front tire has 240 mm disc brake while the rear tire has 130 mm drum brake, which is quite similar to Apache.

Hop on the bike, start the engine, hear the pleasing sound, twist the throttle, and ride on without worrying about the potholes in the way. The suspension of the bike is superb. In the front, there are telescopic shock absorbers, while on the rear side, advanced mono-suspension technology is used. Unicorn is the first bike in India to carry Mono suspension technology. The latest telescopic fork is also excellent.

Handling and Control

With the brand name ‘Honda’, there is never a doubt regarding handling and control. Handling of the bike beats everyone, whether Apache or Pulsar. The ride is stable and smooth, with excellent cornering ability. The bike is comfortable to ride, and can be easily maneuvered in city traffic.

·      Reliable brand name, Honda.

·      Excellent handling and control

·      Powerful and smooth engine

·      Headlights can be switched on even when the engine is not started

·      The bike can be started in any gear

·      Introduction of mono-suspension in India

·      Not so sporty look

·      All Analog instrument panel is really out dated

·      Rear tire should be a little larger

With such an affordable price tag you might think that the Lava Iris Fuel F1 Mini to be a dud. Well that is not the case with this phone, as it comes with a 1 GHz Processor and 512 MB RAM, which can power through the most demanding games and apps out there. The phone also sports a stunning 4.0” WVGA display and offers customers with 8 GB ROM which can be further expanded up till 32 G with an external SD card. With that being said, it is definitely a phone worth checking out.
