Nokia C6 - Expert Reviews

Operating system and UI

The C6 is a touchscreen smartphone having a 3.2-inch screen and comes fitted with slide-out QWERTY keyboard for providing both the facilities of touch and type. It Supports Symbian S60 5th Edition. It is presenting 3G HSDPA and Wi-Fi for speedy internet access. It comes loaded with Nokia's standard Ovi features, including Ovi Maps for navigation – which is provided by the integrated A-GPS, and the Ovi store for experiencing new apps, widgets, ringtones and other stuffs . The C6 is available in the shades of white or black. The box is loaded with the phone and its battery, a micro-USB cable, 2GB SD card, mains charger, and earphones with microphone for hands-free talking. Nokia C6 is a kind of mobile computer with a large  and bright nHD offering 640 x 360 pixels and 16:9 aspect ratio, TFT color display with resistive touch screen and tactile feedback. The device combines the convenience of qwerty keyboard with touch UI and Home screen functionality.

In C6 we have the homescreen providing five widgets, which can be stroked out of view with a slight touch of the finger. The C6 showcases Nokia's White theme as default, which makes things far more fascinating. The interface gave the device an integration with the Ovi ecosystem (Contacts, Maps, Store, Ovi Mail, Nokia Messaging). It lacks smart dialing from the dialpad, the contacts need to be googled(or better say, searched) out for finding the desired one. Talking about the OS, Symbian is a functional, but outdated platform. The phone runs on 434MHz CPU and 128MB RAM. This OS delays the opening of media files, gives unnecessary confirmations, and the excessive options in the menus that is hardly of any use.

Other Features

Music player of this gadget is excellent and helps in soothing your mood .The QWERTY keypad provides you a swiftness while entering text. You now get an easy access to various social sites like G-talk, Facebook and many more within few seconds.  If you are feeling bored, simply switch to FM radio and feel the exotic sound quality with a better FM reception. Nokia Messaging consists of the email accounts on the C6 - setting up all popular services is convenient, but one can only download up to 250 messages from the account memory to the phone's inbox. In landscape mode, the phone restricts the user to use only the physical keyboard for typing SMS's, since there is no on-screen QWERTY.

Nokia C6 features an amazing high quality 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, and Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation. Additionally, numerous apps - from games and videos to news aggregators and web services - are available in the Ovi Store. The camera offers inspiring facilities besides the usual scene modes, white balance and self-timer adjustments, it is featuring manual exposure and ISO setups, as well as a multiple shots mode. When the LED flash is concerned, it's a great performer , despite not having that Carl-Zeiss optics.

However, some faded colors can be seen, which the phone tends to oversaturate under bright sunlight, and resolution and detail are somewhat lacking at places. Indoor performance is fair when the LED flash is on, but is noisy without it, and even more when clicked under low lighting conditions. The video has been credited a resolution of 30fps, which shows nice colors and has good quality but a bit noisy. There's a 4x digital zoom which is noticeable, and can be adjusted easily while taking video. The flash has a red-eye reduction mode, and can be turned off. Nokia C6 offers video resolution of 640x480 pixels.

Uploading pictures and videos has to be done using Ovi, instead of having Facebook and YouTube options. Slight video editing like merging, cutting and adding text to clips can be implemented right from the gallery.

The music player offered by this phone is pretty good. The loudspeaker of the Nokia C6 is of average strength and quality, slight roughness can be felt when dragged to the high volume end. The headset boasts out pretty good sound quality. The Nokia C6 plays MPEG-4 video formats in VGA resolution, and with the RealPlayer format, but doesn't have a corner for DivX/XviD formats.

The large screen provides an awesome Internet experience, as well as Facebook can be directly accessed from the homescreen. Nokia C6 is perfect for people who want to stay up to date while on the go. Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity are provided for speedy browsing. Just hit the central button from the Home screen to bring up the main menu. From here, you can access most of the phone's primary functions, including Contacts, Messaging, the default web browser, Photos, Ovi Maps, Ovi Store, Applications and so on. For Internet connection Nokia C6 uses its quad-band 3G radio, or the Wi-Fi chip. There is also stereo Bluetooth 2.0, and FM radio with RDS via the supplied headset. For PC connection you have to install Ovi Suite and connect the phone with the microUSB cable, but that doesn't charge the handset.

Left side of the phone holds a flap covering the microSD card slot. A 2GB card is included alongwith, but it can be streched up to 16GB. As far as the internal memory is concerned, you just need to remove those programs which are not in use, so as to save the memory. The internal memory offered by this device is 240MB, less though. However, that's enough to store the phone book contacts, and other temporary stuff. Nokia c6 can take up to 16 GB, in the form of external microSD card. Though it comes carrying 2GB memory card, still if you need more space, it’s better to upgrade.

Other Features

Plenty of useful software apps are loaded in this device. QuickOffice and Adobe PDF are used for document viewing, but if you want to try some editing you have to upgrade to the paid version. Dictionary, Converter, Zip and Active Notes round up the Office folder contents. Other remarkable additional features are Recorder, Podcasting, Traveler, Drawing, ScreenSnap and Shazam. Facebook and MySpace are provided in the form of widgets, and you can download a Twitter client off the store. You can easily download free apps from Ovi Store like the YouTube client, Skype, Qik or Fring, and Opera Mobile, and that helps the phone to stand upto your expectations.

Talking about the gaming facility, the device comes up with sound number of games already stuffed, still it allows you to install and store many more games of your choice. So it's a pretty good device in terms of gaming and won't disappoint you at all.

The 1200mAh battery is a bit smaller when compared to other devices falling in the same price range. Rated for 5 hours of talk time in 3G mode, and 17 days of standby, it is simply not crossing the average battery life. Frankly speaking, the C6's battery life is one of its biggest disappointment. It is the area which needs to be worked upon, in order to enhance its performance.

On the bottom of the phone is the tiny Nokia charging port, while on the top, a flap-covered micro-USB connector and the 3.5mm audio jack is located. The default browser has kinetic scrolling and double-tap-to-zoom, as well as supports Flash Lite, so it helps visualizing the things as if they are for real, but is a bit slow due to the weak hardware. Flash Lite is not that fascinating as it was bragged, although Nokia has been trying hard to compete with Android 2.1/iOS 4.  In ads or in some videos, it works well but complex Flash-based sites and interactive graphics, like the simple charts on Google Finance, slows up its speed.

Other Features

The C6's build materials feel rough and tough due to its weight. It's 30g heavier than the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro. The Ovi Store is much complex to use than the app stores featured on the iPhone or Android handsets, such as the Samsung Galaxy S. The home screen looks tempting in the start, with mannerly customised widgets that can show live updates of your email accounts, Facebook and many more sources. But it has been found that the process of setting them up is rather slow when compared with other phones of the same price range.

If you're a Nokia admirer, and don't want to switch to other brands and are desperate for touchscreen phone then it's better to save your money for the N8, or you can opt for N97 mini, which is now available for the same price as the C6. If you like to run your fingers over a keyboard, you should also take a look at the Motorola Milestone and Dext.

In all Nokia C6 is a phone featuring awesome apps and softwares, however it needs to work upon its hardware. Price needs to fall down in order to make it a satisfactory purchase.
